Extremely disappointed, jacket easily rips
I purchased this jacket for the ski season and only wore it a few times before the arm ripped when I was stretching (not even skiing, which is concerning). I reached out to OR for a replacement, and they would not provide any replacement, which is really disappointing because I'm pretty sure it was a product defect. I've been a fan of OR for years and have had lots of success with various products, but the customer service and quality of this jacket was extremely disappointing. I had a similar issue with Patagonia and they quickly repaired and replaced the items; I would definitely choose to go with Patagonia in the future.
Look good, feel good, safety
Exactly the jacket I needed! The reviews on major independent gear review sites were right on. It's a lot of jacket packed into a slim, effective shell. Pockets for days, but not even my oversupply of fruit snacks and granola bars created annoying bulges or lumps. Half a season in, it's my only truly waterproof jacket. Pit zips are key. It's breathable, but let's be real: anything that can keep out snow, rain, and all the in-between misery is not gonna breathe like a bike jersey - so be attentive to your layering. Fleece is a no-go for me with this jacket, because it traps too much condensation, but a soft shell primaloft ski jacket was the perfect mid layer most cold (10F and below) days.
Perfect shell
I did a ton of research before selecting the Carbide jacket. I had to go up a size, the medium was smaller than expected, but I love the fit of the large! So many great pockets on this. The main zipper does take some effort and is not smooth. I've worn this skiing twice in really really cold weather (insulated jacket under) and I've been perfectly comfortable. I love the color, I got the lilac. I usually go with black because I don't want dirt to show, but I'm so happy with the purple. The hood cinches are all great for modifying with or without a ski helmet. Also love the premium features like the snow skirt and armpit zips. This will be perfect for year-round use. I'm so happy with my purchase.
Solid ski jacket - Excellent layering capacity
Used for inbounds resort skiing. Jacket is lightweight and no bulk with excellent wind/waterproofing. When jacket is fully zipped has a wider collar to accommodate helmet strap, neck gaiter, and other collars without feeling choked. I can wear with a midweight baselayer, 1/4 zip fleece, and thin insulated puffy (eg TNF thermoball or arcteryx Cerium) on an 11 degF day, and it is warmer and less bulk than previous OR insulated ski jacket. I'm 5'2'', 125 lbs, 34B and the XS was ideal arm length, chest width, and hem length (even with all those layers). Also, need to mention bilateral Napolean pockets!
The dream jacket
So I'm the basic girl who's always wanted to fit and look good in Flylow gear. I have given up on that all together!! Last year returned a Flylow coat twice for a different size and still wasn't comfortable. I am a girl with bigger hips, thighs, and butt. The outdoor research coat fits my body well as a top layer and goes over my hips without looking tight. In addition, when layering the coat doesn't make me feel like a suffocated marshmallow. I also wear outdoor research bibs, so I knew I was going to be a fan of the non-insulated design, but I really like the thickness of the coat. Sadly, I haven't tested the waterproofness due to lack of snow, but when some flurries came down the coat didn't seem to care. Lastly, the color I'm a big fan of. I was worried it would be too pink, but it's that perfect subdue pink that looks great with my black pants! Overall I'm stoked with OR gear and I'm excited to see what's next!
Defective zipper
I work outdoors in a forestry setting. I love this jacket, but the zipper is defective. I have to step in and out of it and pull it up over my hips and then zip, as the zippers are stuck at the base. If it wasn't for that, it would be a great product. For the price, I would probably pass on this item.
A great lightweight jacket to keep you warm but not too hot
This was a great addition to my ski gear. Perfect for XC skiing and I'm sure it will be for backcountry as well with the pit zips to provide more ventilation when heading up hill. It also served as an awesome wind layer.
Nice jacket
Very comfortable. Good against wind and snow. The hood worked well to keep warm in blowing snow on like. Worked well over bib and ski pants
Perfect Ski Jacket
I am in love with this jacket. I'm petite so struggle to find something that fits appropriately. This is in the perfect Goldilocks Zone, not too tight that I can't layer and move, and not looking like a circus tent draped over my torso either. I love all the zippers and pockets, there are plenty of spots to store little knickknacks that I need throughout the day in the backcountry or in the resort. I recently wore this on a wet and windy day in the mountains and it kept me dry all day. What a satisfying feeling to watch water bead right off and never soak in!
Happy with this purchase :)
For skiing, which I do ALOT, I prefer a shell so to have full control of the layers underneath. This jacket is perfect for early and late season on the mountain. It's thinner and lighter than my mid-winter, harsh weather shell, and the powder skirt is partially mesh which, again, is perfect for those warmer days. When I wore it on a windy, snowy day I could feel a chill up my back. That's when I realized the powder skirt was part mesh. Originally I purchased a medium size (what was I thinking?). Getting a size small replacement was seamless.
