Does what it's supposed to
Just got it, so no experience other than trying it out. See photos for the compression. Ordered 2 more. Much better built than a cheaper one I bought on Amazon and then returned. The straps are firmly attached are unlikely to tear off.
Compression packs let me use old gear better
Starting out backpacking. Prioritized a new pack rei staff recommended and love it. but needed to use handmedown sleeping bag and tent. Compression bags for each let me fit old tech into pack as effectively as I could imagine. Very smart and these bags were impressive. Thought I could rip them but was wrong.
Perfect for my needs
I got the 10L (orange) and 15L (blue) sacks so I could pack some clothes, a pillow, and sleeping bag. I've got a couple baselayers and a thermarest compressible pillow in the 10L sack and a kelty cosmic down 20 long bag in the 15L. They both fit and compress perfectly.
Outstanding Lighweight Compression Stuff Sack
The 20L compression sack capable of reducing the bulk of your clothing, most 3 season sleeping bags and tents. The stiching around the seams and the straps is nice and tight to provide the durability needed to handle the compression pressure in a lightweight sack. This compression sack is not designed to be waterproof, merely water resistent and it has preformed very well protecting my clothing from condesation on a recent backcountry snowshoe trip. I plan on purchacing smaller variations for my bikepacking adventures.
Perfect for REI Downtime 25 Sleeping Bag
The 15L compression sack is just right for the REI downtime 25 bag. The 10L would not work. Also the blue color nicely matches that of the bag. Greatly reduces volume of the bag vs the sack included with it.
Sized down for my MH Lamina 35 sleeping bag
I have a Mountain Hardware Lamina 35 Sleeping bag which has the older style stuff sack which I hate. I really like the compression sack style, but worried that I would get the wrong size after reading others reviews. I chatted with REI chat person who was lovely, but guided me to the 20L. Once I got to the store I was sure that was way to big. I went with my gut and exchanged for the 10L. It absolutely fits in the 10L, and even the mesh storage bag can go in as well.
less is more
Got this to make a 4-person tent more manageable for backpacking. This stuff sack crushed it!
Fit Western Mountaineering, AlpenLite just right
What was advertised. Fit my Western Mountaineering, AlpenLite, 6' (180cm) sleeping bag just fine. Easy to stuff and easy to compress. Helps to make more room when packing my sea kayak for week long trips.
Does what it needs to.
I use it for mummy bag, it gets it packed down to a very manageable size and is strong enough that I don't need to worry about it tearing. There is only one thing I would change, I have the 10L size and it only has three straps on it. This lets part of the mummy bag push the sac out in that direction. Other than that it's great.
Have become a packing must!
I love these things– this is my third one! When first looking for a compression sack for my sleep system I tried this and an Osprey Straightjacket bag. I can see where the Osprey shape would be preferable in a small suitcase or something where you have limited vertical stacking space, but the REI bag is much, much more compressive and works well in soft bags (like a duffle). You can really cinch things down with the four straps and I've found the material to be durable. I used the 15L version on a cross-country bike ride to store my 50 degree sleeping bag, a travel sheet, and my Nemo Fillo. It all fit and compressed down several inches, and even better the bag showed no signs of wear and tear after packing it full and cinching it down tight 70 days in a row. I also love that the bag doesn't need to be full to be compressive– you could just put a puffy in here and it would pack down because of the strap design.
