Arc'teryx  Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

I bought the Alpha SV jacket in March 2024 at full price. At first, I was genuinely impressed—it feels very rugged to the touch and the fabric seemed highly waterproof. That said, I’ve only used it occasionally. I don’t do alpinism, just some light trekking with my dog, and I usually wear softer pieces like the Gamma MX or the Atom. After a few weeks, I started noticing some issues, particularly a discoloration in the inner fabric near the hood. The more serious problems appeared this year: the hood cuff has completely collapsed inward, as it seems it was only glued to the fabric. Then last week, I noticed the zipper starting to open at the end. For a jacket that costs significantly more than standard options, I expect much better durability. It’s a real shame, because I liked the design and, even though the two-way zipper is something you find on much cheaper shells, I did enjoy wearing it. Unfortunately, it just feels too fragile.

Great jacket. Have been using it for winter hiking and bushcrafting stuff and it has been bulletproof. Can withstand embers from fires, sharpened branches poking it, and many other things. Another great thing is that when you wash it you dont have to re apply the DWR every time. Overall definetly worth the price tag, will last you many years and combined with Arcteryx's mostly free repairs in store I have zero complaints.

This Arc'teryx outer shell jacket is a close copy of the Patagonia weather-resistant jacket sold in mid 90s. Similar to the Patagonia shell it has a number of minor shortcomings, most noticeably the lack of side pockets. Unfortunately, this Arc'teryx jacket has also a much bigger flaw and this is a one-way front zipper. This means that to get to your pants pockets you would either have to unzip the front all the way down or try to hike your jacket’s bottom rim up. Another example of the exploration gear designed by someone who have never had to do it in real world. Disappointing. Way short of a $1K price tag.

Best fitting jacket on the market. Big hood, comfortably accomodating your helmet, slightely bigger fit making this jacket perfect from alpine climbing all the way to skiing allowing you to fit all your winter layers underneath while not being too baggy. No unnecessry pockets or features. This jacket is made to make you comfortable in any environment, all year long. Rugged gore tex pro doesn’t seem to care about rocks or anything. Love the jacket so far. As a mountain proffesional, I can see Arcteryx thought about all the details, that actually matter.

I recently used the Arc’teryx Alpha SV while skiing, and it exceeded my expectations in every way. The jacket offers outstanding protection against wind and moisture — even in strong gusts and wet snow conditions, I felt completely shielded. While the Alpha SV is technically not an insulated jacket, the way the GORE-TEX Pro shell blocks external wind makes it feel incredibly protective and efficient at keeping warmth inside when layered properly. One feature I particularly appreciated was the hood design. It easily accommodates my full-size ski helmet — I actually wear a racing helmet — and still provides excellent coverage and adjustability without feeling bulky or restrictive. Durability is another highlight. During my trip, I had a fall, and while it was nothing serious, I was impressed to see the jacket came out completely unscathed. Not even a scratch on the fabric, which gave me great confidence in the build quality. Arc’teryx clearly designed this shell to withstand real alpine abuse. Regarding fit: I went with an XL, which is my usual size. I probably could have used a Large, but the XL worked perfectly with all my layers underneath, including a midlayer that was also XL. It ran true to size and allowed for full layering without feeling oversized — exactly what you want in a technical shell. If there’s one drawback, it’s the pocket design. They are clearly positioned for easy access while wearing a harness or pack, but they’re not ideal if you want to simply rest your hands inside for warmth. It’s a minor issue, but worth noting. On top of that, technical details like the WaterTight™ zippers, pit zips for ventilation, and articulated patterning make it highly functional on the mountain. Mobility is excellent, even with multiple layers, and I never felt restricted while skiing. Overall, I’m very pleased with the Alpha SV. It’s a premium shell, but in my experience, worth the investment for those who need maximum protection, durability, and performance in harsh alpine conditions.

Perfect Jacket! But....PLEASE make 'tall' sizes for all your jackets! When ice climbing the jacket eventually works its way out of my harness and lets in cold and moisture, so if there was 'tall' sizes where the jacket would be like 2-3" longer, it would be perfect! I am 6'2" and I imagine tons of other people would love to have 'tall sizes' Also the chest pockets would be better if the zipper was on the side... like the Beta jacket chest pockets. Like when you want to chill with your hands in your pockets you cant do that with the Alpha pockets. Like, you are not going to chill with your arms crossed and in the pockets. So I think having them accessed from the side would be better overall.

I eventually had to replace my old Alpha SV after around 10 years of good service. I was very please to get a great trade in discount. The colour is Dynasty/Black, which is perfect for my mountain activities. The additional of two dump pockets is great. The quality of the jacket is so obvious as soon as you see it. Sizing is perfect for those winter layers while not being too big and at the same time movement is perfect. Underarm vents are an essential and allow heat to escape when you push things without having to take a layer off. As others have said this jacket is bomb proof. If the weather turns this jacket will see you through. So please to have a brand new one. It's the go to for sever weather.

Just received the alpha sv in soulsonic today, its a medium, i;m 5foot7.5 inches,153 lbs. 39 chest ,38.5 hip and it fits wonderful , big enough to fit over a down jacket and even my black diamond belay parka ,shockingly because that parka runs big. The strange thing about it it doesnt look too big when not sporting either of those.I purchased the regular alpha ar 10 years ago and regreted not getting the sv because the ar version is more of a fitted cut.This new material is great not as thick n stiff as the old , and a little less noisy . I got the soulsonic color and love it!

This a well designed robust jacket. The Alpha SV is issued to our professional backcountry rescue folks. If it survives the abuse they put clothing and equipment through , then it should last forever for me . Does run a touch large, but allows for layering underneath in the winter. It is pricey had to wait for a sale in order to pick it up. Would recommend it if you can find a good deal. Looking forward to putting some serious hard use on it .

Amazing jacket. Built for the toughest of conditions. I bought it for an alpinism course and WFR certification. Have climbed many peaks in it and it’s kept me dry throughout. Definitely overkill but my go to layering for cold activities with high exertion tends to be a base layer and a shell with big pit vents. I expect it will last me another 8-10 years easily. The Alpha SV covers all that. It’s a great jacket, just very pricy.
