I built a bed rack to mount my Tepui roof tent to. We were skeptical of the size for the two of us.. I am a large 50yr old 330lb 6’2” man with two new knees. Yes I am a big guy. My wife and I fit comfortably in the tent! First night was a lil rough for me the sleeping pad was not sufficient for me. We bought a self inflating air mattress that fit perfectly in the tent and that made all the difference for the second night! We are just getting started with overlanding and looking forward to more! My only issue is I wish the travel cover was easier to get on but that’s part of saving money and not buying a hard shell.
We got the Thule Tepui Explorer tent this summer to explore New England with our 1-year-old puppy more often and could not recommend it enough! It was super easy to install and is faster to set up than a regular tent. On our first night trying it out in Acadia, there was a big rainstorm that came through and we stayed warm and dry in the tent the whole night. The mattress is comfy and roomy, too - it made a great first travel bed for our dog, who didn't want to leave in the morning!
I’ve really enjoyed this tent. We’ve used it on five two night camping trips in the Adirondacks since we got it in May and it’s performed flawlessly. I have no issues with my zipper at all. It has not snagged even once on me, and I’ve set up and taken the tent down north of 25 times (we were rained on hard during two trips so after we got home I aired it out the next day in the sun; friends also always want to see it set up). The mattress is *okay*. It’s not as bad as people make it sound, but it is rather firm memory foam. I’d suggest a diy foam topper (we haven’t done this yet but it’s on my list). We use sleeping bags and a tie blanket while sleeping inside and it’s been comfortable. The tent really excelled in the heavy rain and moderate wind. No worries about getting rain inside at all. I can set it up quick enough that in the pouring rain it’s easier to set up than a ground tent, in my opinion (I’d suggest practice first).
Super easy to set up, comfortable, and fit me, my girlfriend and my two pit bulls. Excited for to use it more!
I rarely write reviews, but I feel compelled to share my experience with the Thule Tepui 3 Roof Tent after three years of ownership. I’ve only used it five times, and it’s honestly falling apart. This product has been a huge letdown, especially considering the price and reputation Thule has built over the years. Build Quality: The sides of the tent are delaminating after minimal use, which is incredibly frustrating. This shouldn't be happening after just three years—let alone after only five trips. The material quality is clearly not up to par, and the fact that it's coming apart like this is a major red flag. Zippers: The zippers are another issue. All of them are failing, and some are already completely unusable. A roof tent is supposed to keep you safe and secure, and a zipper that doesn’t work is an obvious flaw. At this point, I can’t trust it to keep anything secure inside. Cover Design Flaw: One of the most frustrating parts of this tent is the cover. The strap that secures it when you’re driving wears through the fabric of the cover, which results in a hole over time. I had to replace the cover after just a year because of this stupid design flaw. The strap just rubs against the material constantly when you're on the road, and there’s no way to prevent it from happening. It’s a terrible oversight in the design, and Thule has done nothing to address it. Conclusion: I expected a lot more from Thule, and I’m extremely disappointed in the Tepui 2. I’ve owned it for only three years, and it’s already falling apart with minimal use. The delamination, failing zippers, and poorly designed cover are all issues that make this tent feel like a poor investment. At this point, I can’t recommend this product to anyone, especially given the cost. If you’re looking for a roof tent, I would strongly suggest exploring other options.
I purchased this used this summer, and have had it our 7 nights so far in different weather conditions. Hot and Humid - the 4 large mesh windows allow for amazing ventilation, and shades over each window keep the tent cooler as well. Wind - high winds and the tent was solid and secure Rain - not a drop of rain inside, and no puddles on the bottom, which is almost inevitable with ground tents. Tent is nice and cozy, and the ladder is solid and sturdy. Easy to set-up and pack up - and it makes your vehicle easy to find in the grocery store parking lot too.... Roomy - I'm a big guy, and had plenty of room to stretch out and sit up, even when my girlfriend accompanied me on some of the trips. Plenty of space. Love this tent - well done Tepui & Thule
This is a solid three person tent, but we actually use it for our family of four. It’s larger than it looks, and after some getting use to, it goes up in about 5 minutes and packed up in 10. We love it! It’s comfortable, fairly quiet on the road, and looks great!
Purchased this a couple months back. Has performed awesome!! I have a 22 Subaru forester wilderness and it is such a great accommodation for camping. Assembly was easy, everything is well thought out by Thule. Mattress is a little firm but I like that. Took 2-3 mpg off but not bad at all. Love the versatility and ease of set up/tear down. Couldn’t be happier with this thing. I purchased the single shoe bag to go with this and it was well worth it. Ready to camp any day/anytime/any where. Even did great through a wicked rain storm! You will not be disappointed with this set up.
Mounted this on my 2019 Tacoma TRD with 5’ bed, coupled it with the Yakima HD mid height towers and 60” crossbars. Now for the tent, I’ve spent 13 nights in it so far and it has performed with no issues. Rain, wind and nightly frost still has not found its way through the thick nylon nor the included rain fly. Sets up and stows in minutes...the ladder setup takes some practice, it defies logic but is super strong and does the job. Condensation didn’t seem to be an issue as noted by others but I do leave the window flaps partially open throughout the night, I would still recommend the anti-condensation mat as a companion purchase. Keep it clean and air it out after each trip and it should serve me for many, many years.
This is a quality piece of equipment! The tent is comfortable and looks awesome. My kids have a blast with it. Really easy to set up and take down - takes about 10 minutes to do both. Install took some time and you'll definitely need a second person because this is heavy and awkward to get on top of your vehicle. The cover can be a little hard to get on but that's because it has a tight fit. Overall, this is an awesome tent.
