If you are a hiker that wants to dabble in the ultralight game but not put to much money into it, this is a great pad. it is very light at 1lb 5 ounces, and still gives a lot of comfort on the trail. I am 6'1 and fit comfortably on the large pad. It has an RV of about 3.1, I have slept in 20 degree wether and have stayed very warm. I love the fact that the stuff sack is an integrated pump sack so you can save you breath on the trail. Plus it is multi-functional which is one step closer to going ultralight. This pad is also very quit and will not sound like your sleeping on a plastic bag. Great pad I would definitely recommend it!
This is a great pad- comfortable, lighweight, packs somewhat small, and insulates for 3 season backpacking. The included inflation sack makes setting it up easy. It is a little noisy, but most pads without open cell foam are. If you backpack alot, the noise is not noticable. The only minor complaint is the dimples do hold dirt that would slide off of other pads.
This pad worked great for me - a side and back sleeper. I got the best night's sleep I've ever had in the backcountry on this pad! Only takes 4 or 5 puffs into the stuff sack pump to blow this up 100%. VERY quiet pad, too. And it has what they call "pillow lock." Upon opening the package, it had 4 stickers that they said to place in designated spots on the pad. I had no idea what they were for until I tossed my pillow onto the pad - bam! It holds your pillow in place so it doesn't go shooting out from under your head.
I've used this pad for about four years now. I wanted to write this review to clear up some of the low ratings. First of all, rating a pad low due to the size of it not meeting your expectations is silly, as you should have just read the listed dimensions of the pad first. Its an ultralight pad (its in the name!) so of course its going to be narrow to save on weight. I'm 6'2" and a side sleeper and I fit on this pad fine. I do put my pillow/filled stufff sack off the pad to give myself extra room but I read the dimensions first so I expected this, since I know my height. As for noise, yes it squeaks and crunches when you move, but I honestly don't think its that bad. ALL ultralight pads are loud, as they aren't coated with soft material and are made with lightweight materials to save weight. For being ultralight, this pad is great. Its the only pad I've been comfortable on as a side sleeper, the design really does well dispersing weight. It inflates very quick and deflates basically instantly. I can roll it up incredibly small which is great for backpacking. I also appreciate it's durability. It doesn't feel delicate, I've even thrown it straight onto dirt and rocks while camping at the base of a Sierra peak to get an early start on a climb and have never had a puncture. Warmth wise, it keeps me warm down to about 25-30 degrees F, which is what the rating is consistent with, after that I usually use a thermarest foam pad under it. Great pad, the reviews are being harsh.
I have a women's regular insulated mat. The good: Blows up quickly, deflates to fold easily, lightweight, and if it held air would be comfy. This is my second mat both with similar problems: they lose air as the night goes on so that I'm sleeping in the middle of the night on a 1/2 full pad. Very uncomfortable. The first one I looked and looked for a leak, then sent back to the company who said there was no leak after testing. I asked to please send another one. They did and the same problem is occurring, whether at high altitudes (which they said might happen and you have to re-blow it up) or in the desert. Unfortunately, I'm done with this mat.
I wanted to like this pad. I've had it a couple years and it sure does pack down. I've never had it lose air or anything. I think the pump bag and valve system work well. My problem is that I'm a side sleeper. My hip doesn't seem to touch the ground but it does ever so slightly. I don't think I've gotten a good night's sleep on this thing all the times I've tried it. I wake up and after trying both sides multiple times my hips are sore. It is better than notepad and on your back or stomach you will not have any problem.
I thru hiked the Appalachian Trail with this pad. This pad is light weight and small, I’m a side sleeper and it was great. Maybe carry a sit pad for your hips in a shelter! Had one tiny pin hole one time, repaired with the provided patches and never had an issue again!
Took this pad on my 2016 AT Thru Hike and then used for a season of guiding for an outdoor ed program and had zero durability problems with it. Did a combo of tent / shelter / and cowboy camping. This pad is suitable for side sleeping, and I really like the way the eggcrate texture helps to create a more stable feeling when you're laying on it. The 1 way valve system is FAR superior to the more traditional screw valves on many of the Thermarest pads (both for ease of inflation and faster deflation - no horrible hissing in the AM, just one fast poof as you pull the release valve). I put this thing through the ringer and ultimately had to replace it after many years of hard use. In my attempt to cut a few grams from my baseweight, I replaced it with a Thermarest NeoAir at a garage sale. I miss this pad every time I get on the Thermarest. If you're debating between this pad and a neoair and you value comfort and ease of use over a few grams, buy this pad!
This is easily the most comfortable sleeping pad I’ve used! I’ve used 4-5 or so overall and have had this one for nearly 4 years now. I bought the larger one for a few reasons; I’m 6’5 210 lbs first and foremost... but also, $20 isn’t much more to have the one a little larger no matter your size IMO. I’m always letting friends use this pad and a few of my friends have put down the money for this pad because of their love for it as well. It’s a little ‘loud’ compared to other ones, but it’s not THAT loud. (When you’re rolling over, etc.) Your sleeping bag has just as much of a say as this pad does. 4 years, tons of usage and 0 holes or punctures, even when used while camping on rocks. It comes with a little patch kit just Incase. Buy it!
I work and sleep outdoors and spend almost every night on the ground. Bikepacking and mountaineering is how i spend most of my outdoor recreation time. This is my second STSULI pad. The first lasted 91 consecutive nights before it started leaking at the welds. This is a sign of certain doom for an air pad. Previously, i owned rei brand mattresses. Durability is not a property of rei air mattresses, thus I was grateful for the positive qualities and 91 nights of durability of the STS mattress. I figured that i would just have to spend a few hundred dollars a year because mattress welds are dodgy. However, after the leaky STS pad, i bought another because the first was light, warm, easy to use, packs kinda small and it wasn't very noisy. I used it in the desert and in the Rockies and Sierras backcountry. To my surprise the new pad has lasted for 274 consecutive nights, SO FAR, and it has just begun to leak at the valve. The leak is minor. The provided spare valve doesn't fix the problem but I expect a few more weeks before it deflates to a point where i am touching the ground in the morning. As long as the welds hold I am completely happy with this mattress. So the new STSULI pad that i am about to buy will be the tie breaker for me and if it works as well as the one that i have now, I will come back and up the rating constellation to 5 stars. In the spirit of full disclousure, i note that the pad is noisy but that doesn't bother me at all. i think noise is an air mattress thing and others in my cohort all have noisy pads also. .
