Good, but not perfect

I've been an off and on runner for many years, and always pretty gear-averse. Recently I've been getting into longer mileage with my dog and realized it's necessary to carry water. Here's my long review I've taken this vest on a few long runs and bike rides and here are my thoughts: First, the pros: Fit- very comfortable and pretty stylish for a running vest. I feel like Lara Croft with it on. I like the closure, but wish there was a way to tuck the extra string (all product photos show it tucked when in reality it is hard to make it stay like that). I'm 5'5, 115 and got the XS. Its snug and comfortable and didn't bother me or chafe on moderate runs/rides in the heat (6.5 mile run and 20+ mile bike ride) General function: I like the storage and placement of things. Pockets are easy enough to access and fit a surprising amount of necessities. Flasks are really easy to use and not uncomfortable on my chest. Fabric feels breathable and durable. Cons: For the price, which after you add the bladder is almost $200, I think there is room for improvement. First, the vest is listed as a technical item, and it definitely is. There's a lot going on with this little garment - lots of clips and pulls, and honestly I don't know what a lot of them are supposed to do. However, it comes with no instructions, and the PDF online is pretty useless - very barebones, feels like an intern put it together. I generally think that a complicated, expensive piece of gear should come with clear instructions on how to use ALL the functions of the item and achieve a perfect fit. Second, I am disappointed in how the reservoir works. No matter what you do, the tube sticks out funny. I eventually realized (after hours of research) that I should have bought the salomon brand reservoir which has a tube routed to a different angle, but this information is not online anywhere. There's a small, rather difficult-to-find hole in the bottom to route the tube, but when you do that it makes the fabric bunch awkwardly. I also tried routing it straight out the top, and that sort of works better, but it's still awkward and the tube doesn't stay flush because it's not designed to work that way. Again, annoyed that there's not a better tutorial online for this or more details in the product description (like, hey, this is only compatible with OUR branded reservoir). Last, I think the used gel packet thing should be removable, or atleast put somewhere else. It feels flimsy and is constantly in the way. Overall I'm going to keep it, but I just hate when things are unnecessarily complicated, and this does have that feel.

Good, not great.

All in all a great minimal vest. I’m 5’8, 160lbs, 40in chest. Size medium fits perfect. I wouldn’t go bigger due to already having to cinch adjustments. Two gripes. Left bicep ended up rubbing on vest armhole after 14 miles which left a pretty tender mark on the skin (I was wearing a tank). Second, is the key or money pouch? I’m not really sure what it’s use is, but the plastic like pouch on the right side kept unfolding throughout the run. Things you just don’t want to have to focus on. It held up, allows for a bladder on the back, and dries super quickly. I might end up just cutting out the pocket.

Did it’s job but not long term solution!

We bought 2 of these bad boys for a 100 mile race, they lasted the 100 miles and served us PERFECTLY! However, 2 weeks later they are trashed… all of the letters coming off! I thought for the price it would last longer then one race! (Also they run very big! I am usually a large, bought a large and chafed really bad on my neck)

Major design flaws!

As much as I love the look of it and how well it stays in place, there are some flaws that puts me off from recommending this vest to others. First, as others mentioned, the inside material is so rigid that it ruins any clothing underneath. Second, the reflecting lettering on the front and the side of the vest started peeling off just after one hand wash (I have seen similar complaint with raceflag version). Also, the items that you put in the front pockets end up at the back which was mentioned in other reviews as well. Lastly, those extra non breathable layers at the back makes your back sweat a lot.

Minimal Versatility

I recently traded road running for trails and quickly realized I needed more than water and some chews for longer training runs. As minimal as this vest is, it’s design is nearly flawless and incredibly versatile. I mostly carry water, gels, peanut butter sandwich, baby wipes, and my phone if I think I’ll be out for a few hours (that’s all in the front pockets with plenty of room for more). The back storage is great for my jacket and winter mittens when I heat up, but I find it hard to access the side rear pockets and upper back storage without taking the vest off mid run, but that has more to do with my lack of flexibility. Perhaps if there was a long size (even 2 extra inches) for taller runners (I’m 6’5”), it’d be easier to reach those compartments... I also run in Salomon’s S/Lab Trail shoes and shorts (in warmer weather), and like the exceptional security/mobility of materials and fit in those products, the advanced skin 5 set vest is consistent; I ordered a Large based on my chest size in clothing (42) and the vest fits snuggly with room to tighten front cords when soft flasks are depleted. The vest moves naturally with my body and stays in place without any adjustments. It fits well over my base layers, insulated vest, and jacket. This vest is nearly perfect for me, but I give this 4 of 5 stars because I like to think there’s always room for improvement.

Perfect fit

Best running vest. I needed to replace a flip belt that didn’t fit right and the vest was the perfect choice. It is comfortable and has more than enough room for my runs.

Perfect for all seasons

I bought this vest last winter and have been very happy with the fit, the pockets and the color. It doesn’t rub on my neck like other reviewers commented. The fabric is soft, even with just a sports bra. I found that if I use the longer straws on my soft flasks, I can tuck the mouth piece into the shoulder pocket to keep it from hitting me in the face. Those pockets are also great for hand sanitizer and chapstick. I have a third flask that I fill with electrolytes that fits in that long tube pocket in the back. I don’t have a 1.5L res that fits this vest, so I haven’t tested out the features related to that.

High Cap, Light, Poor Stitching & Fire Sensitivity

Been using this for long bike rides and walks. Great vest and high capacity with everything held tight to the body and pocket position is relatively good. Back camelback bladder insulation sleeve is too small for larger bladders, but they do fit without the sleeve (1.5L). Also - stitching is not substantial enough for heavy use. The material is also very sensitive to fire because of how thin and plastic it is. The graphics are also peeling after a few washes and about 20 uses.

Comfortable, minimal, just right

Awesome vest! Fits perfectly, has just enough storage space for a wind jacket or whatever you need to stuff in the pocket on the back, flasks are easy to use and get every last drop of water out while running. It has convenient pockets for gels, bars, snacks, even a pocket intended for empty gel packets (but this is hard to use while running). It seems like good quality construction and materials and so far, has held up well for me. I’m 5’ 10” & 155 lbs. I have a short torso and the small fits me snug but it’s very comfortable. I thought I would want the 12L but I’m glad I got the 5L as it has plenty of room and still feels very minimal and sleek.

Heat Transfer peeling off -

Vest is great, love it! However,, the heat transfer on the front pocket is already falling off after only 225 ish miles, and once a week hand washing ( as recommended ). Not what I would expect from Salomon. Purchased this color to get the "Race Flag" markings. Very disappointing that it would peel off so fast.

Great Pack, Great Warranty but not built to last

I bought this pack in May for marathon training. I used it daily and it was great. It held all my stuff, didn’t bounce around, and was exactly what I needed. It did chafe my neck a lot but I think that’s just how these things work. In August I noticed that the stitching was coming undone. I take care of my equipment so I was surprised by this. Seems like a craftsmanship issue. I ended up filing a warranty claim and it was approved. They replaced my pack. Kudos to Salomon for standing by their product. Hopefully the new pack when it arrives won’t have same issue.
