WOW! This is my fourth BD headlamp and is an upgrade from the reg Icon. It seems serious thought went into everything as this was not just a superficial upgrade just to say it's "new." This is an entirely better headlamp and man is it bright! The added power boost button is an incredible new feature! Right out of the box I noticed better cable/clips to the battery box, double adjusters for both headband and over the head strap, red, green and blue light with a separate cycle button and easier battery lock. I can operate everything with gloves on too. Very Impressed.
I bought this lamp to access and immediately switched to the battery at belt system. I’ve tested it in summer only at the time of this review - everything works superb. I hope that it will still be great when using gloves and mitts in cold winter conditions (XC skiing, mountaineering, etc). This lamp offers a lot of functions and is not the lightest, but its power, versatility and duration are outstanding. I recommend to test it thoroughly at home in controlled conditions and do any changes to the fit prior to any event, as it takes a little while to find the perfect fit and balance between straps, the lamp, cables, cable holders and the battery pack.
This headlamp has a tendency to turn off whenever you jump or hit a bump while skiing. The issue seems to be loss connections b/t the AA batteries and the terminal at the top of the battery pack. If you shake it, you can hear a little wiggle in there, as if it all needs to be tightened up a bit. For a year or so, the problem was manageable by pushing the battery pack cap in tight and restarting. Then the battery pack unit started to develop small cracks in it (cheap plastic) which made the problem much worse. Overall, this productive is illustrative of the multiple troubles I've had over the years with BD lighting. Better to look to Petzl for lighting stuff.
Some Black Diamond products become second nature after a season of use. The Icon 700 headlamp finally became one of those products after a year and a half. Ignore the poorly written user's guide. This headlamp can be configured a number of different ways. It is as bright or as dim as needed with lots of options. (The green light is excellent for those pre-dawn poaches of your favorite area - stealthy up, full beam for the descent.) It really is the perfect headlamp once you have it set up correctly, although I'd like a Go-Fast battery option (e.g. a single 16340). The rechargeable battery pack makes this headlamp bombproof.
Pros: Water resistant, battery lasts seemingly forever, very bright, battery pack can be stored in pack and attached via extension cord to take weight off head. I keep my headlamp in the center console of my car. I use it almost every day for night hikes, shoveling snow before work, and even just to find stuff in my car without using my dome lights. Very well built. Cons: Heavy, bulky, doesn’t easily fit over caps. This doesn’t bother me. While climbing and running, it holds tight to my head. Although the battery on the back of the head is very bulky, it’s more than worth the extended battery life. I’ve been using it for months and still haven’t had to replace the batteries. I can leave it in my car or backpack knowing it’ll have plenty of juice for my next adventure.
I open the box put in the included batteries and the moment I close the lid to the battery pack 2 of the lights on the headlamp light up and die. Won't turn on and when I shake the battery pack I can hear how much movement there is with the batteries. I'm assuming this is an issue with the contacts not making a proper connection with the batteries, which is an issue many others have with Black Diamond headlamps. Overall the product seems to be a hunk of junk due to the poor quality control the company has.
I generally love Black Diamond equipment. However, this was one of the worst pieces of BD gear I have ever purchased. The button design is terribly overengineered and confusing. Multiple night colors/modes? Multiple button combinations to change brightness, night mode colors, light lock, etc.? No thank you. When getting outdoors, having to fuss with headlamp buttons is the last thing I want to be doing. You shouldn't need a huge instructions document just to operate a headlamp!
This headlamp is a bit on the heavier side but worth it in my opinion if u need the extra brightness or extended runtime of 4 AA batteries. I went hiking during the tropical storm that hit southern california this summer and there was heavy wind-driven rain. This headlamp survived the constant water exposure of an approximately 3hour hike. It comes with an extended power cable if you prefer to carry the battery pack on your hip instead of your head. Highly recommended and worth the money.
I was so excited for a nice new premium headlamp from a trusted manufacturer. I rely on my gear extensively and it needs to be reliable. The ‘main’ light is bright, but the good stops there. The quality is anbsolutely abysmal - the fit and finish is garbage, the cheap injection molded plastic feels so chintzy, the mechanism for closing the battery is obviously a weak point and poorly designed, and it is flickering out of the box. I can’t rely on gear that’s built to a price. Stick to other manufacturers if you want a quality headlamp. Should have read the reviews before I purchased. I’ll be returning.
I love every product I've ever purchased from BD, except for this headlamp. I've used it twice, most recently on a rim-to-rim-to-rim hike in the Grand Canyon. At 3 a.m., on the exposed trails when I needed it most, it failed at least 70 times. The batteries move around in the case and lose contact with the terminals, which causes the light to go out. In the dark of the night, when every step matters and when I had momentum, this is not a good situation (at all). Most of the time, I just had to flick the light back on. Sometimes, I had to bang the batteries around, remove the entire headlamp from my head, etc., in order for the batteries to reengage. It was aggravating at best, and very dangerous at worst. I contacted BD and they would not replace it, even though it's an obvious internal error and has only been used twice. BD makes other headlamps. Find something else that is more reliable.
