Absolutely poor quality fabric used for these pants. Crotch tore on the second day of use, then the tear continued right across my thigh. Why this isn’t rip stop nylon I’ll never know. At this price point, I expect much better.
I wanted some splash wear that might get me close to a dry suit, not for winter but for summer in Maine and other places where I still wanted some cold water protection, but not a wet suit and I wanted breathability. I got these pants and the NRS RipTide Jacket. The pants are very well made. Large was the right size for me, and remember that in a kayak with your legs pulled up, you will want some extra fabric. Bottoms of the pants are a Velcro cinch. You can't really cinch hard enough to keep water out, but it does limit it. The riptide jacket does have something closer to latex grommets at least on the wrists. I tested the gear in the shower before my first ocean trip. It was awesome, the water just rolled right off and I stayed completely dry. Since then I have made 4 ocean trips. I rinse off everything with fresh water when I get back (never soap, air dry). Now here is the issue... After that 4th trip, as I was rinsing the pants, I noticed that the water wasn't just rolling off, and it was wetting the outer fabric instantly and not beading. Just in patches but enough to see that something had changed. Water doesn't come through but if this is touching your skin it feels clammy. Not what I wanted for these pants, I want beading! So I called NRS. Not super helpful, they said that salt if drying on the pants could cause the water resistance to weaken and you would get wetting. The person was knowledgeable about the pants and said that the coating would wear our eventually, and you might need to nik wash and recondition with water proofing. But I have only had these for 1 month! So I was getting ready to return them and I tried the last resort. I put them in the dryer for 10 min (often recommended for waterproof outer wear). Magically the coating is now beading again and behaving as expected. (btw I have not yet had this issue on the riptide jacket which is same material). So with that, I am happy, and if I have to put them in the dryer once in a while I am ok with that. Just didn't want to re-condition with waterproofer after only a month. So 4 stars was for not getting this suggestion from NRS and the fact that you might have to pay a bit extra care. Otherwise I LOVE the pants.
I don't kayak or do other water sports but am an avid snow skier. Purchased the NRS Endurance Pants to serve as the dry (water, ice, snow resistant) outer layer. They are fantastic! I wear a couple thermal layers underneath have great movement in my knees and hips. The bottoms pull very snug over the top of my ski boots and the velcro waist band is excellent for easy access. The zipper pocket is so handy for everything from snacks & gear to technology. Not necessarily the intended use but works great!
I just received this product so my comments are mostly focused on fit. I bought the pants for an upcoming second Grand Canyon rafting trip. A takeaway from my first trip is that quality outerwear is one of the most important determinants of comfort and ultimately enjoyment. This is a relatively expensive, but high quality pants. It is waterproof, but using a material that allows for wicking of moisture; able to accommodate both being soaked with cold river water in storms and periods drifting in the hot sun. It has adjustable waist and ankle closures which should help keep out the water. For now, I can only comment on the fit. The waist runs true to the size chart, in my case XL. The legs are long for me, but the ankle closures insure that they don't hang over my feet. The extra length may also facilitate the movements involved in paddling. Looking forward to trying this out on the Colorado River!
NRS made good quality products, I've used them for 35 years of whitewater boating - paddle tops and pants. I am sure these will work as well also however they they've gotten the sizing all wrong and the sizing chart doesn't help much with measurements for waist and chest. How about inseam?? The XL should be sold as chest waders - like the reviewer from NC I had the same issue w/ the XL, they came up to my nipples and I'm 5' 11". I ordered both XL and LG; the large works fine for me over my wetsuit. Waist of 34-35" and a 32" inseam
I have been wearing NRS splash pants for at least 20 years and loved them until now. Ordered a pair in xxl for a little more room and they are smaller than my original xl. Really missed the mark on sizing with this one.
I'm 5'10 - so right on the national average height for men. My waist size is 36, so right in the middle of the size chart for waist (XL = 35-37). The waist would fit fine, except that these pants come all the way up to my nipples. They would be nice if I were 6'6" tall.
Excellent fit, perfect for kayaking and keeping dry. The breatheable fabric is so comfortable.
I bought this with the riptide jacket for sailing. Great quality and fit. I’m 5’11” and 150. The outfit size M fits like it’s custom made for me.
Fit nicely. Same quality as the jacket. It was warm enough on the paddle to go without the pants, but i expect the same performance.
