Kurt Swing Away Rack v2
I purchased this Kuat swing away adapter to enable me to keep my bikes mounted on my Jeep Wrangler while getting access to the Jeep rear door. The Kuat works perfectly for that task. I have a 2" hitch mounted Thule bike rack attached to the Kuat swing away adapter and it all works perfectly. The spare tire mounted on the Jeep rear door (size 255/70 R18) only just clears the Kuat rack, but it does clear it. If you have oversize, non standard tires, you may not have clearance. The rack seems very solid and stable, but it is new, so I can't comment on how well it will hold up over time.
broken x2
Purchased purchased my first Pivot V2, literally the first time driving it, it came loose. Tightened the allen bolt that holds the cam tightener, which pins against a small black bolt in the hitch, bent and broke. Returned it. Got another one because I like the slim profile, aesthetic, and how the arm functions. Had been working great for a couple of months, all of a sudden it came loose again. Same issue. Didn’t take it on any big off roads, no direct impacts. This is a serious design flaw that other reviewer‘s have pointed out. Will be returning and finding a new brand that is properly built.
Stripped bolt when delievered
When delievered cam mechanism bolt was stripped. Kuat customer service was very helpful and sent an entire new assembly for free. The cam mechanism on this swing away is different than on their racks and seems less good - not sure why the design changed. It is working good now and doesnt wobnle in the hitch so im haply with it. Does what it is supposed tk and allows full access to my truck camper shell.
Does what it says
Purchased this for working around the tailgate mounted spare tire of two different new SUVs on order. Unfortunately neither have arrived yet, so I’ve only been able to test on my truck. I purchased the pivot to provide both extension to clear the spare tire and the pivot either the tilt (with appropriate rack) to clear the hatch opening above the tailgate on one SUV or the tailgate opening on both SUVs. While I can’t guarantee those objectives were completely achieved at this time, it looks pretty apparent this will work. The Pivot arrived at REI in three days, was nicely packaged, build quality was very solid and instructions are clear and straightforward. It also comes complete with locking linch pin to secure the rack and prevent theft of this expensive piece of equipment. It mounted simply by sliding into the receiver, but make sure the tensioning is loose (with provided hex key) or it can appear to be too tight. Once in with tensioning loose, it’s easy to position to slide in the linch pin. Tighten the tensioner and Bobs your uncle! With a simple pull of a handle the Pivot swings out to 90 degrees and a second or continuous pull extends to 120 degrees which should wide enough to clear any swinging tailgate with a spare tire at 90 degrees. The Pivot, as an extender in locked position, also allows the Tailgate on my Tacoma truck to be fully opened with rack mounted. I think this would work similarly for larger trucks/tailgates. Overall I’m very pleased with quality and function, which are commensurate with the price.
Awesome add-on from Kuat
Bought a new Jeep Rubicon and had to add some space between the rear spare tire and the inner bike on my Kuat hitch mount rack. The V2 Pivot is a stout piece, but makes access to the rear of the Jeep a breeze- no stepping over the center bar and the gate can swing open easily. Even planning to use it on the Subie just for ease of access to the hatch. Swings smooth with both bikes loaded. Very secure too.
Dent-free Tailgates & Liftgates
This adapter is mandatory if you plan to use your pick-up tailgate with your NV 2.0 rack. It is heavy and solid. The shank of the rack adapter is powder coated which makes it fit very tightly into the receiver - it does fit. The very tight fit helps to prevent movement of the rack and adapter in the vehicle hitch receiver. I suspect that removing the adapter from the hitch receiver is not going to be fun time. This adapter locks in place at both a 90 and 120 degree swing from the closed position. Both locked positions allow me to drop the tailgate of my truck with unobstructed access to load and unload items.
Great looking product but cam on hitch is $#!+
Waited for this to become available. Swing works great. But......the cam that tightens the Pivot 2 inside the receiver hitch broke. Literally got it a week ago. Installed with no issue. Went to show it off and the whole thing was loose. Tried to tighten and it broke. Little pieces came out of the hitch. Hope REI will make this right. Kuat has a serious issue in material selection or design.
Tightening mechanism broke on first use
I was excited about this product, and have had good luck with Kuat racks in the past. But this one has a bad design flaw -- the first time I installed it, the entire cam mechanism that secures it inside the hitch cracked in half. It doesn't seem like I was the only one with this issue either; I would avoid this product until Kuat changes the design/materials of the cam mechanism.
Allows full function of vehicle
Very happy with this Kuat Swing away adapter on my truck, SUV and Sprinter Van! Would give 5 Stars but the Swing - Away rack adapter is incomplete for road use right out of the box. Unlike the Kuat Nuvi 2.0 which is rock solid with the no sway adjustment knob, the swing arm needs a Trailer Hitch Tightener / Stabilizer clamp to keep bike rack from "rockin horse" swaying back and forth. These products are easy to find, all have a threaded U Bolt and use either a rounded bar or flat clamp to bridge the receiver hitch and the swing arm. Once you install and tighten the stabilizer clamp the rack and swing arm are very solid and steady. Sure is nice to be able to move the bike rack and gain access to the back of the vehicle in seconds!
Simplest to use compared to other options!
I planned a road trip from Washington to Moab and wanted to make it easier to access food and gear from the back hatch. A 1up bike rack with 2 mountain bikes is able to tilt out of the way, but it's still a pain to do during a road trip. The Kuat Pivot V2 swing out works perfectly! Because of the quick-release handle, there's no messing around with a loose locking pin that could get misplaced. It's so easy, I can even open the swing out with one of my feet if I have to get into the hatch with my hands full. It also looks much cleaner than the original Pivot and the swing out made by RakAttach. When I first mounted everything up, there was a lot of flex up and down. With 2 mountain bikes on the rack, everything would bounce up and down pretty violently if I drove over any speed bumps or dips in the road. This flex went away once I tightened up the U-bolt that locks everything down. I haven't seen any mention of how tight the U-bolt needs to be, so I originally left it the way it was shipped to me. Be sure to tighten it up to prevent any excess movement. The adapter does add a good amount of length to the back of the vehicle. I haven't measured it, but I'd guess that it's about 12 inches from the receiver pin hole to the stinger pin hole. On the back of the car, it's a bit more length than I'd like. One up-side to this is that the bike rack sits just far enough away from the car that I can now open my back hatch while the rack is stowed in the vertical position. Overall, this is a compromise that I'm willing to make. The 250lb weight limit might be restrictive for some people, but it's plenty strong for a 2 bike rack. I think you can add up to a 4 bike rack with this adapter, but you should consider stronger swing out adapters by Wilco or RIGd Supply if you're planning to regularly carry that much weight. For my use and budget, the Kuat Pivot V2 is great.
