Beautiful, quality materials, frustrating gauge...

I love looking at this pump, touching it’s carved wooden handles and solid body is a pleasure every time it’s used. I love the slim design because it can fit almost anywhere, but doesn’t look out of place even by the front door or living room. I would recommend this product, but with that being said, two issues leave me frustrated enough that I still consider returning it. The biggest problem using this pump is the gauge. It’s low contrast black on red dial is frustratingly difficult to read because the needle is also black. This is made worse by large gap between the dial and the glass cover. The edges of the glass are covered by a metal frame and the edges cause shadows to be cast across the dial. Using my iPhone flashlight is neither an acceptable or great solution because the amount of space in the gauge still allows for shadows. At $150, it’s simply a shame that pulling out my iPhone is necessary every time I want to read the dial, and the black text/markings with the black dial make it very tough to determine if the needle is above, below, or at the desired pressure. Also, why is there no storage for the presta attachment? I shouldn’t need to worry about losing it and having to search around to find my presta attachment every time I use the Schrader valve. Both these issues have been addressed on the more expensive models with a magnetic space for storing the presta attachment and the gauge using red/white high contrast colors on the dial. The fact that it’s got fully replaceable parts (including the dial) with an exceptional warranty make this still a 4-star purchase. On the silca website they sell replacement dials for the significantly more expensive model, it wouldn’t be so difficult I imagine for silca to adopt those dials as a solution to the SuperPista Plus. Finally, the heirloom quality is what makes this pump most desirable. The carved wooden handles that will certainly develop a unique ‘patina’ as they are used and become worn. Unfortunately, the packaging is about as far from this type of experience. Charging premium prices and advertising “heirloom-quality” but they can’t even cover the wooden handles with a simple protective bag or foam to prevent damage during shipping. I love and appreciate the character and story that can come from extended use... but that’s the right of the customer. Unfortunately when mine arrived there were marks, unacceptable damage and chips in the handles. The packaging was simply zipties around the almost entirely exposed pump, tying down the shaft, holding it tight to the cardboard. This didn’t inspire confidence that a replacement pump would arrive safely. I really love this pump so much but I am frustrated to see the issue solved with newer pumps but no solution for the SuperPista Plus. The pump is still a fantastic pump, with fantastic warranty, fully serviceable parts and a clean, unrivaled appearance. Maybe these issues are easily overlooked for others. Personally, I haven’t decided yet.

Bad connection with presta valve

I am very disappointed with this product, especially in light of the price. I bought it to replace my lezyne floor pump which was excellent while it worked. I was interested in trying something different because I thought the Lezyne gave out too quickly) . Straight out of the box, the Silca did not work as promised. The presta chuck at the end of the hose (the connection to the presta valve) does not hold. I have to hold it in place with one hand while trying to pump with the other. The feat of gymnastics is unnecessarily challenging for the price. Also, the pressure gauge swings wildly with each pump (which might be due to the unstable connection). I would not recommend this for the price.

Love the one handed operation

I have been using this pump for a few years now after only ever using locking style chucks. I was nervous about some of the reviews but figured after decades in production the Silca chuck had to be tried and true by now. Now I feel like I have been missing out all of those years. The chuck on this is so satisfying and easy to use once you get used to it. Pushing the chuck straight on and off is key in creating an airtight seal that keeps the chuck in place. It may be harder at first when seals are tight but quickly settles in perfectly. Removing is just as simple without ever needing the bleed valve. After more than 2 years and hundreds of uses, it still works great.

Poor quality!

I bought this pump thinking it would last me for years to come, only to find out the pressure gauge is not working. I’m new to biking which is what I use the pump for. I did not realize the pressure gauge is supposed to stay at the pressure shown on the gauge after every pump. My pressure gauge will rise every time I pump the cylinder, but it immediately returns to zero. I’m not sure if this is a defect, but it was quite embarrassing when I was showing it off and my buddies $50 pump worked better. This is my two cents and maybe I’m the only one with the issue, but now I’m going to have to get a new pump and I wasted bunch of money on this one.

True Heirloom Quality

A few years back my wife bought me the Ultimate pump from SILCA and I think that I talked about it so much that I drove her crazy, it truly is a work of art. So when I needed a pump for our vacation house, I bought this one as the Ultimate seemed a bit too expensive to sit there most of the year unused. This is absolutely worth the money, built like a tank, so smooth and easy to inflate to higher pressures, you can feel the quality.

I really wanted to love this pump

I really wanted to love this pump. I was looking for a pump to reliably pump my Presta-value tires to a given pressure but the odd bleed-off required to remove the push-on Presta chuck is hard to use and doesn't inspire confidence that the tire pressure will remain as what was shown on the gauge. Additionally it feels like the pump doesn't really put all that much air into the tire with each stroke of the pump. Lastly, the wooden handle is a bit uncomfortable on my hands; it's smooth and contoured nicely, but the wood is very hard and I find it challenging to use.

Makes pumping so much easier

This is so much easier for me to use than our old, cheaper pump. I'm a petite woman and our old pump was awkward for me, and I had to put in way too much energy to pump my tires. This Silca pump is so fast and hardly takes any energy at all. For me it's really worth the higher cost.

Time-tested design

ok... as I have just received this and only used it once, read on with that in mind. But, let me say that I owned a standard Silca Pista for over 20 years that worked flawlessly during that time, and this version is virtually unchanged from it except in a few good regards that I will share below. I am the person who gave a 5-star review to the red Bontrager dual-charging floor pump about four years ago and who just published an update on it a few days ago lowering my rating to 3 stars due to a critical failure that appears to be a common flaw (plastic parts?) mentioned by other reviewers. It had worked beautifully until that failure, which led to me trashing it after failed attempts to disassemble, diagnose, and fix. Oh well. I use a floor pump a LOT. After much searching, I chose to move back to the Silca Pista. Why did I leave my old Silca Pista in the first place? 1) It was not a tripod, and thus bit unstable, 2) Switching between Presta and Schrader chucks was cumbersome (not a simple screw-in switch like it is now), and 3) The black pressure dial was only about 1.5" in diameter and quite difficult for my old eyes to read. There are basically three versions of the classic Silca Pista available now... the standard (very similar to my old Pista), the Pista Plus (the one I purchased and am reviewing here), and the SuperPista Ultimate (the beautiful and quite pricey Cadillac of pumps). I purchased the Pista Plus because it has a tripod stance, offering greater stability. It works wonderfully, just like the my old Pista. All the critical parts are metal. Parts that can wear out are replaceable. The chuck is the same as the old Pista press-on chuck, but is now made of aluminum instead of brass. You now simply unscrew this chuck to allow you to use the pump on Schrader valves. The Presta chuck has a bleeder button, which makes removal after inflation a bit easier. In order for it to work properly, ensure that the Presta valve is at the highest vertical position so that the chuck hangs down vertically when attached. If you do not like this type of chuck, you can purchase the fancy Hiro side-lever chuck that comes with the SuperPista Ultimate. It costs a bit, and I have never used one. But the reviews are stellar across the board. Your choice. But this current floor pump reviewed here is a winner winner chicken dinner in my book.

It’s’a Tire Pump!

Kinda funny that a tire pump has a learning curve to use. It looks very handsome, but you could save $120 bucks and just buy a JoeBlow
