I wore this jacket for a hiking (W trek) and horse riding trip to Patagonia where you can have all four seasons in one hour including powerful winds and driving rain. This jacket was superb. I wore it virtually all the time with different layers below depending on the temperature. It was originally purchased for a high altitude trek in the Karakoram which had to be cancelled when I caught COVID. It is super light weight, sturdy and packs small. Perfect, for the hiker who wants to keep carry weight low.
I got one little snag on a tree and it ripped the sleeve wide open. Not durable at all. I liked it for the whole 2 days I wore it before it fell apart with moderate use the didn’t even last 12 hours on the trails
It's doing great so far! The true test will be using it on a 93 mile Wonderland Trail hike/camp around Mount Rainier! Will update review then.
I love this jacket. I'm 6'2, 218, and I got size XL. Fits great and has room for layering underneath. I use it mainly for mountainbiking, and I almost couldn't be happier with it. The only issue I have is the draw string clamp at the bottom not being strong enough to hold the elastic cord where I'd like it to. The rest of fantastic: the jacket is waterproof and completely windproof, and the breathability is also outstanding. The pockets are big enough and higher up in case you wear a backpack with a hip belt. This almost perfect! Great color (I got the blue one), great fit, and great features. Very happy with it. Great job, Black Diamond!
This lightweight shell performed so well for me that I’ve already ordered another. The comfort, ergonomics, breath ability, pit zips, and durability as well as packability vaulted it right to the top as my favorite rain/snow/wind shell for backpacking either a day trip or overnighter. It does run a little snug, seems designed for either a leaner hiker/climber or to have only a nano puff/grid fleece and layering system underneath. Unlikely to accommodate the ultra bulky puffy parka, but you can always throw that overtop if needed. Pit zips sometimes easier with help from a friend. Performed well both in heat, high winds, and fierce cold nights well below freezing.
Admittedly, I haven't put this jacket through its paces yet. But in standing under a waterfall, it was totally repellent. The jacket does run a little large; I'm 185 and 5'9" with a stocky torso and got a L. Torso wise a M would probably fit better but I wanted to be able to layer and still move. The arms are also a little long but the length for the M and L are the same so that wouldn't make much difference. Will revisit and update when I test in some wet weather. Still highly recommend!!
Lightweight, water and wind resistant as described! It worked so well, I am very very happy with it!
I've taken this jacket out for a few tours now and I'm loving it. Very light weight and pack-able, fits well. I'm 6ft 145 and bought the Medium which fits smaller than my resort ski jacket, but perfect for what this is designed for. Jacket is very weather proof. Pit zips are large enough to vent really well, draw cord around the hem is a good light weight alternative to a powder skirt. Only feature I would add is an interior drop pocket for skins.
This is the poorest fitting jacket I have ever tried on. The cut of this jacket is just bizarre. The shoulders are way too tight and the sleeve length on the XL would have fit somebody who is 6'9". I tried both the L and XL and could not get either to work. Though the build quality is excellent, the fabric is also very flimsy and I doubt this jacket would hold up over time. Black Diamond needs to up its game after this swing and miss.
Shell isn't bad. Doesn't offer insulation but plan on using it for backcountry skiing so really just want a layer that keeps the wind off me and offers some snow protection. This shell is that. Its light weight has enough room in the hood to get around my helmet, all around a high quality shell. There is taping on the seams that will hopefully up the durability of the shell but will have to see. Excited for ski season with the highline.
