I have a pair of aggressive climbing shoes for bouldering, and wanted something comfortable and affordable to do rope climbing without having to take my shoes off every few minutes. The tarantulace are super comfortable and have decent performance. My only regret is not going a for 1/2 a size smaller. My street size is 9, my MadRock Remora's are size 8.5 and are SUBSTANTIALLY smaller than the Tarantulace size 8, which kinda doesn't make sense.
These shoes are absolutely fantastic as someone's first pair of climbing shoes. They're super comfortable for me with wide feet/toebox. My only complaint is that the front of toe gets a hole in it within 4 months of just climbing 3 days a week.
This is a quality, all-around, rock shoe. I've used this primarily on outdoor rock, but I think it would perform well in an indoor setting as well. It is a comfortable shoe, with a soft inner material that makes it quite comfortable when wearing without socks. The laces also make it relatively easy to adjust the tightness throughout the shoe. While this shoe doesn't excel in any specific areas, it is a basic shoe that performs fairly well in a variety of situations. If you are just getting into climbing, or you want a no-frills shoe that will perform in a lot of different situations and is comfortable to wear all day at the crag, this is a solid option for you to consider.
I previously had a pair of Tarantulaces in 44.5. They were my first shoe; and I realize in retrospect I bought them not snug enough. Very soon, they felt "sloppy" on smaller gym features. Got a pair of TC Pros in 44.5 when I could not jam my foot into a 44. Love them and used them in MOAB. Now have them and a pair of Katana Laces in 45, FWIW. Recently, I read you shouldn't wear the rubber off your best sending shoes on gym features. So, I was in REI this weekend, saw these new jet black badboys, tried them on in a 44 and loved how tight they were. Went off to the gym and climbed 5.8 and 5.9 in them right away. That's the top of my performance ability, BTW; due to weak fingers and forearms. At this price point, I recommend them HIGHLY for beginners or people who want a 2nd or 3rd pair of shoes in their gear bag for warmup routes, casual boldering or when you want a couple of easier routes at the end of a session. But be sure to get them 1/2 size smaller, to compensate for the stretchng that's going to take place!
Try not to read too much into shoe reviews; every climber and every climbers feet are different, so take every review as consideration and not mantra. With that said, the Tarantulace shoes are great option for new climbers and for climbers returning to the sport after many years away. For the former, you’ll find an affordable, comfortable, and durable shoe. For the latter, if your like me a wore insanely tight technical and aggressive shoes in your previous hardcore climbing life, and then screamed in pain putting them in again 15 years later, then the Taratulace are a nice way to ease yourself and your feet back into climbing. Sizing wise, I went a full size down from my 9.5 street size. They’re comfy, I can wear them for a good hour at a time, and while they now feel a little too big, I can still hit V3 bouldering routes and 5.10b too rope routes in them. So long story short, if you’re a beginner, these shoes will get you off the ground and on the walls, while also giving you a better idea of what your next shoes should be as you progress in climbing. For the returnee, you’re not the masochist you were a long time ago, but you’ve got nothing to prove, so stop torturing your feet! Put them all into Taratulace’s, and get climbing.
We got these for my 15-yr-old son, who has been getting into climbing for the past couple months. We were renting shoes and harness from the indoor climbing gym for the past ~20 visits there. He noticed a marked performance difference (better) with these Tarantulace shoes over the rental shoes. I bought him a pair of Scarpa Origins, but the upper heel material was causing him pain on the back of his ankle. He said these ones are SO MUCH more comfortable. Also, he wears a size 12 street shoe, and he is wearing a size 12.5, US, in these climbing shoes. Hopefully they don't stretch to be a bit too large. But, for now, his toes fit into the toe "box" area of the shoe perfectly, and no more heel/ankle pain from the back of the shoe.
I bought these La Sportiva Tarantulace Climbing Shoes for my son. A hole has developed on each of the shoe for six month weekend indoor climbing. Is this a durability issue? I am not a climber. I would like to hear other customer's opinion (please click "yes" if you think it is an issue. Please click "no" if you think it is a result of normal wear). I will adjust the stars according after. Thank you.
Went into the store looking for a low-cost beater pair to climb indoors; was planning to get Finales, but came away with these new Tarantulaces after trying them on. Very cushy and comfortable on the foot (probably more padding in the upper and tongue than necessary) and around the heel (a bit looser than I like in the heel cup though). The sole construction is a bit chunky and definitely less performance-driven than my Katanas, and the glue holding together the leather and rands doesn't look the most durable, but after climbing in them for a few weeks, they have held up fine and I haven't noticed myself drop a grade on the wall (I'm not doing much cave climbing, but I can imagine these aren't great for toe-hooking). I wish they hadn't embedded a glossy brand logo on the mid-sole (I get paranoid I'll slip off a rounded volume at some point). Sizing: my street shoe is 42-43; I go with 41.5 for my Katanas; for these Tarantulaces, I had to go all the way down to a 40 to get a reasonably tight fit. After a few weeks they have stretched into a more sustainable size as was expected. Overall, a great value if you're looking for a pair of shoes to take the bulk of wear and tear from training on the wall.
I found these shoes comfortable (for climbing shoes), and the grippy rubber inspires confidence. However after being used 8 times over a little over a year, the lace eyelets are ripping out, after both the REI return policy and La Sportiva warranty have expired (although had Covid not hit immediately after purchase, these issues would likely have surfaced quicker. Quality seems to be a real issue. I won't buy again.
I have owned these shoes for about two years, climbing in the gym with them about 4 days a week. These were my first pair of climbing shoes and I think they are the perfect entry level pair of shoes. The price point is right and they hold up great. Also super comfortable. Great kicks
