Not a hiking shoe!
I'm very pleased with the shoes. Overall they're really good quality and very comfy, and they look great also (but don't wear it with your tox!) I was surprised that Merrell states that they are true to size as i needed to go for a size 11 and I'm usually a size 10! So they run quite small in sizes. When I decided that my review title should be not a hiking shoe, it is because they are not meant for trails which includes rocky roads. The sole is too slippery for that kind of hiking. But for well prepared trails and just a walk in the woods they are perfect!
Nice looking shoes - what is up with the laces!!
Nice looking, comfortable shoes (gold color) - the laces are designed for a boot. This is more of an annoyance review - why would a company like Merrell make such a nice shoe and then give you laces that are almost 2 feet longer than they should/need be?!!! What a design flaw... I hate having to triple knot my shoe because a company was too cheap to make multiple lengths of laces, they are clearly using the same lace for the boot as the shoe... Merrell's only solution when I contacted them was for me to purchase (my dime) other laces, but they have no matching color/style - which is half of the charm of the shoe. two stars for lame customer satisfaction
We're sorry you are not happy with your shoes laces. The length of the laces is based on the number of eyelets the shoe has.
Sturdy but great looking shoes
I love these shoes. They're good looking, but obviously well made and will last a long time through rugged wear. I actually use them primarily as a kind of weight lifting shoes; the sole from the heal to the ball of the foot is very flat, and gives you a strong base while working out at the gym. They do run a little long and wide for my foot, but since they don't do half sizes I think the size down would be too small. That's the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 5. If they did half sizes, especially when you get into the 11, 12, and 13 sizes, I would give it 5 starts without a doubt.

This is a great shoe for the first two weeks. Then the toe cover starts peeling off.
Look great but very uncomfortable shoes
I got the Catalyst Suede Paloma. They look great. The fit was correct at 10.5 but the shoe feels like walking on concrete. The insole heal is raised and very noticeable. Why would the interior heal be elevated like that? There is just no cushion feel at all. I also bought the Merrell MQM Flex 2 which feel much more comfortable and actually have cushion and spring when walking. Very bummed with these Catalysts, returning them. I notice Merrell shoes to be very low on the achilles which makes my heel lift when walking. That part of the shoe should be higher for wrap, fit and hold. Had a 10-15 year old pair of Merrells that were past their life. Really wish I could have found that identical shoe. They were shaped for comfort and hold better back then.
Seems durable
These are far more comfortable than I would have thought. They fit well and are a perfect mix between a scrambling shoe and a casual every day shoe. If there was a single point of criticism I have, it’s the lacing at the mid-foot. The typical rivets give way to two sets of very thin cordage which do not grip the lace very well making it difficult to tighten the mid-foot. I don’t feel as though it is a major downfall as it still feels comfortable and wears well. They look pretty darn good too.
Perfect fit and comfort
Took a risk to buy these online- very glad I did. They fit perfectly right out of the box. Crazy comfortable. Love the very adjustable lacing. Considering buying a second pair.
Comfortable- just don’t walk in sand
I like the these. They are comfortable. They do break in quick. Good traction. But if you walk in sand the mesh tongue traps it and keeps it in shoe for a long time.
TOO SMALL
Easily 1 - 1.5 sizes too small. It’s a nice looking shoe, but it won’t even go on my foot. Returning.
