Smooth, Easy to Install, 1 Flat in 3,000 miles
I have had these tires on (700x38 - tan / light) - on my Niner RDO RLT for most of last season - they sealed up perfectly with just a hand pump (running tubeless), the ride smooth on the pavement & give me plenty of traction in the gravel. (I don't get into too much mud) - I had one flat which was a game ender - big nail ripped a large hold in the tread - I was able to make it work to get home, but the tire couldn't be saved. I love these photos & I'm back on here to get another set. Surprised to read the other reviews about the flats because I've had terrible luck with other tires & only 1 flat in about 3,000 miles on these tires... AND they lasted about 3K!!!
One of my least favorite gravel tires
5k plus miles on gravel, bunch of tires tested. Here are my thoughts on this tire: Pros: The tough version (what I bought) is indeed tough and hard to flat. Holds air well set up tubeless. Cons: Tough to seat tubeless, I tried every trick and finally took it to my excellent shop mechanic. He remarked that he had a tough time as well. They feel really slow, rolling resistance feels high. I lose 1.5 mph on my usual route. They ride harsh. Every surface imperfection is amplified. Long story short, very disappointing. Taking them off tomorrow and tossing them in the bin. Bike is night and day slower, harsher, and less fun to ride.
2 out of three is pretty bad
I’ve had a pair of these on my Topstone for a few months now. Aside from torqing the rear wheel bald in a couple thousand miles, I haven’t had a problem. I got them thinking I’d be doing more gravel, and at first I did but for the last two months riding 5-6 days a week it’s been pavement. I haven’t flatted once since I put them on. Personally, I’ve been happy with them and I was looking for another to rotate with when I came across these two surprisingly bad reviews. Im tempted to order another one just to see if I have the same results as the ones I have on right now. With two negative reviews and my positive review, it makes it hard to recommend to a friend. I will say though, I’ve been happy with this tyre.
check which version tire you have- heavy or light
This tire has been fine. I was worried by the reviews I had read, only to realize that there are two versions of this tire by the same name, one is 'heavy duty' and the other 'light weight' or something like that, and the REI site doesn't distinguish them. I bought it IN STORE, and it didn't quite match what was shown online. I realized that all the bad reviews were of the 'light weight'. I don't remember the details, but remember having an 'ah ha' moment that gave me confidence to go ahead and buy it. Its been fine. I put it on a rim that other tires were unstable on, but with this tire it was fine. It has been sturdy over sharp gravel and even some patches of broken bottles. knock on wood.
too many flats
I purchased this tire to replace an OEM WTB Riddler on my Cannondale Topstone with over 2000 flat free miles on it. It was worn out. Riding surface 2/3 road, 1/3 good gravel. The Teravail went flat twice on good gravel (rails to trails) in a few months (~ 400 miles). Both tires had tubes. I'd go back to the Riddler if it wasn't so difficult to change. I'm thinking about tubeless for next setup. Other than the flats I liked the Teravail - the 80 psi was a bonus for roads.
The flattest tire in the history of tires.
You look at this tire wrong it goes flat, a stiff breeze and this tire goes flat, your cat brushes up against this tire and it goes flat. Tubes, tubeless, doesn't matter. This tire wants to be FLAT.
