Questionable build quality and packaging
I had high hopes for these rollers as I looked for a way to be able to bike indoors without spending a fortune. Seeing the reviews here, I thought I'd found a high quality product to do that. I waited until they were in stock and picked em up as soon as I could. However, I quickly noticed issues. The box was beat up when I got it, with one of the padded "feet" that makes contact with the floor completely exposed and scratched and beat up. Whatever, I figured it's gonna get beat up at some point. When I first set up the rollers is when I noticed an actual issue. One of the metal connectors that goes through the metal bar and attaches the half of the rollers with 2 drums for the rear wheel to the half of the rollers for the front wheel is missing its retention washer. I've attached a picture because it's a little hard to describe. This means that one side of the rollers can come apart and happens often and extremely frustratingly when trying to setup or clean up the rollers. I spend a couple minutes every time having to finagle the little metal piece with the missing washer into the hole to actually hold the pieces together. One of the other metal connectors lost its black end cap the first or second time I used the rollers and I'm afraid that its retention washer will come off next.
Great Product, innaccurate product description
The positives are that this is a fantastic set of bike rollers, and that they shipped very quickly, arriving at my house 2 days before the estimated date. REI customer service is top notch, answering all my questions and very willing to accommodate any issues. Unfortunately, however, the main issue is that there is no way to adjust resistance on the rollers, magnetically or otherwise. It took a couple of phone calls to REI and Saris to clear up this misunderstanding.
Great product
I have two sets. One with resistance and one without. I use one at work during lunch with my single speed and the other at home with gears on the resistance. After eight years on these rollers I can recommend the product. Saris has been very good about any concerns I have had with either pair.
Exercise for real, no fooling around!
These rollers are great for someone who wants to get fit at home without getting bored. Because you have to balance all the time, you're obliged to keep pedaling,and pedaling fast! After a few wobbly trials, I was up and running, but if you are not perfectly fit like me, it takes a while to build endurance to keep riding for a long time. My reason for buying these is because I am a working mom currently living in a hot country where there is basically no road bike culture. So, I come home, get to see my little one while exercising, avoid stupid drivers and am out of the heat. The only thing you don't get is the outdoor breeze, but a fan will do. These rollers are very stable, easy to ride, easily adjustable for different bikes and seem to be very durable. I have been able to ride these while watching TV, but I found them a bit noisy, though I could not compare with other rollers, since this set is my first one. I'll get a mat to decrease noise. The only issue was that when I received them the rubber stoppers that cover the holes on the frame were not in place and when I opened the rollers, some little metal disks came out. I still need to check what these are. Just make sure all pieces are in place before you open yours.
What a workout!
I love this trainer! It's solid, easy to setup, stores nicely in a compact form. It takes a little practice, but once you get it, it's fun. And what a workout! A higher pedal cadence ensures better balance, so I end up working pretty hard on this thing.
Excellent Balance Level Required
The Saris roller worked perfectly well. The problem was that it requires a level of balance higher than what my wife and I possess. We had to return this item.
Fun workout
Using it is like learning to ride all over again. It took me almost two weeks to finally balance on it without bracing myself against a wall. Now that I've gotten the hang of it, I wish I'd gotten the version with the adjustable resistance.
Very hard to use.
I tried with both my hybrid bike and road bike but could not figure out how to balance on the roller for duration where it'll be an actual exercise. The roller rolls very smoothly for that 1 min I was able to balance.
