No inadvertent activation

This review is to address another reviewers concern of inadvertent activation. Upon receiving this item I attempted to recreate this problem by using a significant amount of force pushing through the protective cover. These efforts were unsuccessful. While this unit is larger than the PLB375 it does utilize the new MEOSAR network. For those unsure of this unit versus a Garmin option, it is worthwhile to look into the various satellite networks. Multiple solutions is always best, but if it's between MEOSAR and Iridium, I'd bet my life on the former.

I took this beacon with me while backpacking in the Sierras, and had it fastened to my shoulder strap, just as shown in one of the pictures. When I set my backpack down, the power button was activated through the "protective" cover. Although I turned the beacon off as quickly as possible to indicate a false alarm (there's no 'cancel' button), a SAR team was still dispatched to investigate. From talking to the SAR guys, it sounds like this is very common for this model of beacon. Do SAR teams everywhere a favor and get a beacon that is harder to accidentally activate and has more functionality.

On #3 I replace every 5 years

The USMC gave me my first one in Afghanistan in 2010, I have since when on and just bought #3 do a lot of boating on the Great Lakes and made the Miami to Bimini run on a 19ft Yamaha AR190 and a Sea-Doo GTX. Came across a family who had engine trouble and a handheld radio 30 miles out of Miami they had a Garmin PLB that wouldn’t get a signal my friends ACR got a signal within a min and USCG was on scene in about 40mins from activation, the USCG got a fishing boat to tow the family back. ACR gave him a new one due to the activation was considered an emergency. Great product wouldn’t trust any other PLB/ EPIRBs

Must have for wilderness hiking or offshore boatin

I bought this for dual use - nearshore boating and hiking in the Whites. It does what it says it does, and it very reasonably priced. Someone is criticizing the $150 dealers charge for battery replacement. There are a lot of online dealers that will replace the long-life lithium battery in this for less that half of what an authorized dealer charges. And you really only need to replace the battery after a rescue (or 5 years I think). But consider that it needs to be kept waterproof after the battery is replaced and it is considered an FCC-registered life saving device. I pay for the dealer to do it, and this is from some someone who buys $15 Samsung Galaxy batteries on ebay and melts the back off my phone to save $20.

CANNOT be accidentally activated

This CANNOT be accidentally activated. There is absolutely no way to accidentally activate this PLB. If you need further support for my comments, please visit your local REI store for a demonstration, as how to activate the ResQLink 400. In addition, ACR has videos on its website, too. I have carried the ResQLink 400 on hosts of remote canoe trips, backpacking trips and long hikes into the backcountry. I would not be without it. When needed, it will notify NOAA, who will confirm that it is you that is in trouble by contacting an individual(s) you provide on your application with NOAA.

Great safety device for continental USA

I bought mine in 2019 for safety on solo fishing trips on remote stream & lakes in Pacific NW Nat'l. Forests and yearly 3wk hiking-fishing trips at Yellowstone NP. I renewed [2021] my FREE registration on NOAA's satellite system (renewed my tiny pice of bandwidth the US gov't. has dedicated to this, my personal, --NOAA registered--device at no additional cost). After purchasing, the owner registers w/NOAA; when that agency's satellite system picks up your crisis call, appropriate rescue services get alerted [Coast Guard, Sheriff's rescue team, etc.). It's easy to use, lightwt & its battery life is Seven (7) !! years.[if actually used in a crisis....Company supplies another--free] After seven yrs., buy a new one . At age 78yrs. I find this an A+ seven yr Life Insurance Policy. LIMITATIONS: This product sends a signal to a satellite in outer space which only indicates to those on the ground receiving it that you have a crisis. Rival products, $$$, Much More Expensive, will give you the ability to message personal needs, or, in less highly expensive models the owner can pick from a cache of phases---Need Gas, Snake Bite, broken bone, etc. Also, this works in the Lower 48 states USA only....no Canada or Mexico. : (

There is no excuse not to have one.

Due to a drowning, I had to activate mine in deep canyons on the Upper Green River in Utah. Two hours later the State Police helicopter arrived.

It’s there when I need it.

This PLB does what it’s supposed to do. While I’ve never had to activate it, it allows me peace of mind should something happen. It goes on all my trips, whether I’m guiding a trek or going solo. Also, it’s very easy to replace the battery. It can’t be purchased for $39. Just can’t beat it.

Can’t be trusted - self activated

This self activated on a backpacking trip and caused significant distress - about 7 hours where loved ones feared a death - not to mention the drain on SAR. I contacted ACR directly about it and their response was lacking as all they said was basically to send it back to them. No offer of refund or replacement which seems terrible customer service given the scope of what their product malfunction caused.

Deeply frustrated

Purchased for mountain hiking trip (Colorado 14ers) but discovered TSA waffling on airline carriage allowability. Wrote to airline (hint, Mississippi River has one) and received this reply: “… This device is allowed to be transported in your carry-on baggage. Please ensure the device is turned off during transport. Please be mindful that even if an item is permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with the airport security on whether to allow any item on the plane for security reasons.” As a retired school nurse, I know a non-answer when I see one. It’s allowed unless it isn’t? Called REI in Denver, they do not rent this critical bit of expensive safety gear, but would sell me another one! Deeply frustrated.
