Do not buy
Handle stem cannot be raised creating a weird geometry for kids. There is no way anyone can use this bike without having to purchase spacers or a new stem. I do not understand how this bike was designed, approved and set to be manufactured. Overall bad design. This was our first co op product purchase, and I don't think we will try again. We love REI but I would definitely not recommend this bike for anybody. If anything I wish they would mention the inability to raise stem unless spacers are purchased (or even better provided with the bike), instructions were vague and not helpful.
Great big kid bike
I upgraded my daughter's bike to the REV 20 from a Trolls bike. This bike is a big improvement in quality and my daughter loves it. It is a nice touch including the stickers so you can personalize the bike. My daughter has no problems with the handlebars, she is comfortable leaning forward when riding the bike. She's already put over 100 miles on the bike riding to and from school and the bike is still in very good shape. Highly recommended!
Stem issue
Asked REI employee who put the bikes together about adding the stem extender due to the reviews. He stated that he never heard about the reviews and felt the bike didn’t need them. He convinced me that it would be okay and now I will have to go back to have them installed. My kids look awkward riding them and they have asked me if I could raise the bars for them. (I haven’t told them that I can’t) I should have listened to the reviews and just had them installed at purchase. Co-Op this is a flaw in your build and should be corrected.
Quality bike and Price is fair.
This bike has race like geometry NOT a cruiser bike where your kid is sitting upright and the handlebars level up to his/hers chest. The bike is very sturdy and well made, tires are wide enough for easy balance and my 44” tall daughter can easily handle the bike. You have to bring your kid to the store and have them test ride it. The bike is NOT small, that is how the bike was built, the rider is slightly leaning forward. If you’re buying online you BETTER do your research. REI has the BEST return policy for a bike so theres no problem at all. (“,)
High quality bike!
This is a very high quality bike! My son is very tall for his age. He’s 98th percentile and only 5.5 at the time of purchase. It’s a great size for him, but I will say that I wish this bike had the BMX style handlebars, as opposed to the mountain bike style, or that the height of the handlebars was adjustable. He has to lean very far forward to ride this bike. Also, the reach on the handbrake is a little far for him too. I’m going to try to adjust that, or buy a new brake, and switch out the handlebars. He loved the sticker pack, so he could make the bike his own!
Well built but very poor geometry.
My 7 year old son was ready to move up from a 16” bike. We should have read the reviews on the previous version. The handlebars are not adjustable and causes the child to have to lean very far forward for control. The stem height is not adjustable and is too low for comfort. The awkward geometry caused my fairly experienced rider to crash on day three and he split his chin open. One trip to the ER and some suture glue later he was back on the bike. One full day of riding later he asked for his old bike back.
Great Buy
I bought this bike for my son for Christmas this past year and he absolutely loves it. I bought it without him there and was worried about it being awkward after reading the reviews, turns out there’s nothing to worry about and it fits him great. He likes to stand up and ride anyways so maybe that helps. My 4 year old daughter steals it from him Constantly and now I’m in the process of buying another one just like it for her. Don’t worry about the geometry, just understand that it’s not a BMX style and ride on. Cheers to 2021!
Great value
We bought this bike for my 7 year old daughter. She loves the bike. It came with stickers and she added her name on the chain guard. It has one speed with coaster brakes and one hand brake. I like that it introduces the hand brake so it will help her transition to a 26 inch bike when she is older. Picked it up assembled at REI so I saved on shipping. Overall good value for a quality bike.
Maybe too long?
The bike works great, but the fit is a bit off. Don’t get me wrong. It is the correct size for my six year old, but the distance from handle bars to seat it too long. The bike proportions seem a bit off for my kid. Unfortunately, I bought in the height of the pandemic and was fearful of not finding him a bike. So, I bought it without him at the store. I recommend you have your child sit on the bike first.
Had to put money in to make it work
My son was having a huge problem transitioning to front brakes, and this is seemingly the only bike on the market with both. I measured him and he was right in the midrange for this bike. We were very excited to get it and he started riding right away, so we let him put stickers on it (solidifying his connection to the bike. lol.). However, it only took a few rides to see he had to lean very far forward to reach the handlebars and he started complaining about his shoulders hurting. He was willing to ride through the pain to keep this bike (which was his first non-hand-me-down) so I ended up buying a new $30 stem and bmx style handlebars from his little bike on to help him out. I still have to spray paint them to match the bike. The things we do for love.) I had to get that combination because the stem on this is for 25.5mm handlebars and the bmx style, which would raise him, up are 22.2mm. I don't know why they didn't design this with an adjustable height stem. That would have made the bike actually fit the children it is supposed to based on measurements.I would not recommend this bike unless you are prepared to put an extra $30 to $60 into it.
