Great at first, but disappointing in the end
I purchased these sandals to use as lightweight camp shoes. The fit and feel are better than any other, heavier sandals I've ever worn. The first four days were great, so much so that I was contemplating using these as hiking sandals rather than just camp shoes. On the fifth day of owning them, the outsole started to de-laminate from the foot bed and the heel tread fell off. All of the other tread pieces are starting to detach as well. I had read some other reviews of this issue occurring and had hoped it was just an occasional bad pair. I was so happy after the first four days, but for this to happen after five days and less than 20 miles use is extremely disappointing. At least this happened before departing for a week long backpacking trip though, there might not have been much left of them after that. Will be returning and going back to the heavier, less comfortable sandals that have lasted for years.
Fell apart after 1 week!
Absolute junk. Bought them less than a week ago at the Boston store. I’m a few days into a 3 week camping road trip and can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve worn them. Last night a piece of the sole on the left sandal separated and the sandal just completely fell apart. Thought they were cool sandals at first. Now I’m sitting here in disbelief that I paid $80 for this junk.
Take theses everywhere
These Xero Z-Trail sandals are amazing. They are super light weight and flexable. They move with the foot. All straps and connecting points are soft and no hot spots have occurred. I have taken these sandles though rivers, creeks, sand, grassy hill sides, rocks and boulders - no problems at all. When sweat builds up on sandle the dust/dirt cakes up and some times creates a slick surface. I also prefer my foot wear tight as possible. I wear mens 13 ordered mens 13 and the sandle fits heal to toe. I do tighten the starps and the tail end nearly reaches the ground, about 6 extra inches.
Only sandal I'll wear!
I bought my first pair of Z-Trails a few years ago. They have served me well overall. I like how they fit and feel. They're not clunky like Chacos, are zero-drop, they grip the ground well, and add just enough protection from rocks and other potentially sharp objects on the trail. The only problem I had with them was when the they get soaked, the straps and the the loops that hold the hardware become a little flimsy and can lose their rigidity as you try to tighten them. I had to hack them a bit, by switching some hardware around and adding a plastic tri-glide adjuster to the outside of the rubber one on the outside front of the sandal so it wouldn't loosen up so easily around my toes. Overall, I really like them, and I'm excited to buy a second pair soon.
Great shoe, short lifespan
I go barefoot everyday I can get away with it, my first go to shoe is my sandals and finally shoes if I must. I really wanted to like these sandals and decided to finally retire my Tevas after 3 years, should have bought another pair of Tevas. These sandals only lasted 4 months, grip is totally wasted and the strap was no good since day 1 but I made it work for me. REI wouldn’t let me return them and I already got another pair of Tevas. This shoe will be fine if you don’t wear them often or for hiking, but won’t last more than a summer of heavy use. My old Tevas with a hole in the sole still have a better grip after 3 years then these after 4 months
Fell apart in ONE MONTH
Bought these at the end of May 2019, by end of June 2019 they had completely failed. The glue or adhesive holding the sole together came unglued. That piece of the sole is also attached to the plastic piece that the strap runs through, so a piece of sole falling off = sandal failure. I message xero through IG and emailed their support team and have heard NOTHING from them. I superglued the sole piece back on and two days later, while attempting to adjust the strap on the OTHER sandal, the rubber/plastic piece that the strap runs through ripped in half! This can’t be fixed, even temporarily. These sandals promise a FIVE THOUSAND MILE warranty!!! I experienced TWO failures in ONE MONTH, that’s like 200 miles TOPS. BUYER BEWARE!!!
Nice Sandals But!!!!
They broke already while wearing in camp. Good thing that I did not try and run in these. The back strap just pulled loose from the sole on my left sandal. Darn it I liked these while they lasted but they have hardly lasted anytime at all. I don't usually wear sandals but really liked the idea of these.
Excellent Comfort; Terrible Construction
These could have been my favorite shoes or sandals of all time. They are minimal, flexible, and comfortable, and even just wide enough for my wide feet. However, they fail after 4–5 weeks of use. Luckily, REI's return policy meant this cost me little, but after three pairs each failing in the same way (the metal loop which holds the heel strap to the outside ankle riser breaking), and with the last pair also having the sole coming apart, these just aren't worth it.
Great Sandal!
Bought these after learning that my brother "runs in sandals". I thought he was crazy, but when I saw these on sale, I gave them a try. I have always liked the feel of a zero drop shoe and this definitely fit the bill. They are super comfortable for most activities. I have run in them several times and they are definitely fun to run in. While they are not as comfortable as good running shoes, they can easily be used for running. If I had to pack 1 pair of shoes for a vacation, this would be the ones to pack. The can be worn with anything, are comfortable to wear all day and will hold up for most activities. You can take them for your morning run, head to the beach with them, go for a day hike and then wear them out for dinner!
Purchased as a UL camp shoe, stream-crossing shoe
Top marks for lightweight. Not great for deeper stream-crossings or slick rocks. They offer little protection and no cushioning, but that was apparent to me when I purchased them and I did so mainly for the weight and use within a stone's throw of my shelter. One thing I hadn't considered was how quickly feet get cold in winter when wearing these due to the thin hard soles not insulating as well as the thicker, foamier soles of a regular sandal, don't wear these on frozen ground for more than a couple of minutes even with socks. Wish they were quicker/easier to slip on at 5:26 AM when I wake up and realize I have some urgent business to attend to. Slips into backpack's front pouch much easier than regular sandals. Would recommend it if weight is the only concern.
