Good lock - no instructions

Just got the lock, set the combo, tested it out, etc. All works fine. The problem is that it comes with NO instructions. It’s just the lock attached to a piece of cardboard that lists “features” but nothing else. A Google search works but it’s a big oversight to not include instructions. Dakine likes to make you work for it.

Really, stay away! REI should sell a different one

The thing works, but it has a significant design flaw which caused me and other reviewers to need to cut the cable. I bought it despite the other reviewers' warnings, but it happened to me too. The issue is the way it works to set the combination. There is a little button that, if pushed when the combination is correct, will set the combination when it is released. The idea is that you initially set it to 0000, then press the button, set your own code, and then release the button. This works fine. What can happen is that when you lock it up and scramble the numbers, you can very easily accidentally push the "set combo" button and reset the combo. There are two problems that ensue. First is that now the lock is not locked. The current numbers are the new combo and pushing the button to open the lock will work. But more importantly, what'll happen next is that you'll come back and turn the combo to your original one, and it won't open because that's no longer the combination. End result, you need to cut the cable. Don't buy this. There are other cable locks of a different design that don't have this design flaw (for example, the one offered by Burton) . Bear in mind that this design is sold branded by many companies, not just Dakine.

DO NOT BUY

Lock worked fine for the first few days. Now we are stuck at Ten Mile at Breckenridge waiting for security to show up with a colt cutter because the lock won’t release. Don’t buy this product, I should have trusted the other experiences others had - instead we get to learn a hard lesson

Poor technical support in REI

I have the three number lock - which it seems is now discontinued. If the four number is constructed the same, do not buy, it is rubbish. The cable does not lock into the body with a click - as stated - and no matter how one tries to set a combination, nothing works. There was a time when REI was a decent outdoor shop with many qualified experienced personnel to test and advise on equipment, but these days it has become a retail shop selling outdoor equipment with very few helpers with actual outdoor experience. I have been a member of REI for 30 years and it has become very disappointing.

No instructions and poor design

I read reviews for this on multiple sites. Despite the warnings I decided to chance it as I couldn't find any alternative by the time I needed it. I should have listened. It is true, there are no instructions. I tried looking them up online, but only found info on the micro lock. I took what I learned about the micro lock and one review on this lock that mentioned using the smaller button to set the new combo, and I gave it a go. The end result is I have a lock that now doesn't open to the factory set combo or the combo I tried to put in. At least tried this at home first and wasn't in the position others were, where their skis were locked to a rack at a resort with no way to get them off except break the lock!

Lightweight Gear Lock

This is a simple, light lock that I use for my board and other outdoor gear. It easily fits in a daypack pocket and extends to a good length for a variety of uses. The instructions could be included on the lock, though they viewable on the Dakine site and are the same as nearly any other similar lock that I used over the years.

Easy to break

I bought one of these and used it only to watch a guy break it open to move my skis off the rack at a ski area. I watched him do it. He was an employee moving the ski racks out of the way for machine groomers later that night. A quick and easy yank and it was broken.

Ski Lock

The lock that I use for my skis is very lightweight and fits easily in your pocket. The cable has way enough length to wrap around my skis and whatever I fasten it to.
