Outdoor Essential and Great All-Around Tool
This knife is a perfect mix of useful features and portability, and it’s quickly become one of my go-to tools. I love that it has so many functions but still fits comfortably in my pocket and hand. A lot of these knives can be too big, but this one is just the right size. Everything feels solid. The blades have a good weight to them, and the tools open and close pretty smoothly. One of my favorite things is the scissors—they’re super handy for stuff like cutting tags or fishing line on the trail. I also use the screwdriver and tweezers more than I thought I would. This would make a great gift for someone who has everything. Highly recommend it!
Solid performer at a reasonable cost.
As a long time knife enthusiast I admit to being very critical on the qualities of a good knife. I will also admit that multi tool knives are not usually at the top of my list. I tend to think of a traditional knife as being exceptional for a single purpose but lacking in multifunctions whereas a multi tool knife provides a variety of functions but mediocre at any single purpose. This brings you to the question of why you are buying a knife. Are you looking for a knife that will excel in the area of cutting but may require you to carry other special tools increasing your load, or are you looking for a multi tool knife that performs good enough in several areas limiting the amount of tools you need to carry, while reducing your pack out weight. Much of this depends on the demands and constraints you face on your adventure, which leads me to believe that both styles have their time and place. Despite my early skepticism I do in fact believe the multi tool knife has its niche in the world of blades. First off, there is a real satisfaction with feeling confident that when a problem pops up the multi tool knife will always attempt to answer. Victorinox’s Swiss Army knife has a very long history of having solutions in tiny packages and the Huntsman knife is no exception. The Huntsman provides 15 functions: large blade / small blade / corkscrew / can opener | screwdriver 3 mm / bottle opener | screwdriver 6 mm | wire stripper / reamer, punch and sewing awl / scissors / wood saw / multipurpose hook / key ring / tweezers / toothpick / can opener / bottle opener. With a length of 3.6”, a width of 1”, and a weight of 3.4 ounces this is indeed a small package. This compact size and careful detail at the ends and edges when folded makes this knife truly a pocket knife to the point where it can almost be forgotten. No catch points, no snagging, and no edge stabbing in the pocket. The only drawback I have with this design is that I often have difficulty getting my finger nails in the blade grooves to retract them. It seems to work much better for my teenage son's hands. Utilizing a sheath is not at all necessary and only adds unnecessary size and weight. The only reason I would use a sheath with this knife is to help me remember where I put it. However, this is really the item that goes in a ready-reach pocket and not in the bottom of a backpack. Another surprising find with this knife was the benefit of the brilliant red color, which seems to visually shout out its presence when many other knives and tools go incognito the second they leave your hand. The performance of the various functions is overall very good, keeping in mind that no single function is designed for a heavy-duty task. The large and small blades have a drop point design that maintain a surprisingly rigid stability to the handle even after a lot of use. The serrated saw blade is always a nice tool to have and works respectively with the understanding that sawing anything bigger that an inch in diameter will take a lot of time and elbow grease. This is not a substitute for your folding camp saw. The bottle opener works great and the scissors are exceptional for as tiny as they are. As with the blades the scissors are very sharp and to the credit of the choice in steel they have done very well maintaining an edge even after much use. The alloy seems to do quite well with corrosion resistance as no rust has been evident after much exposure to moisture. The other functions on the Huntsman are more useful out of necessity, but are definitely not the first choice because of ergonomic constraints. Screw drivers, can opener, and wire stripper get the job done but it's not pretty. Tweezers, hook, and tooth pick are actually pretty nice little features tucked into the package. All are on the small size compared to what you are normally accustomed to making things a little more difficult, but they are adequate for the camp site or trail. Overall the construction of the Huntsman is very good with tight tolerances. Again, this is not meant for heavy duty applications and no single function is excellent, but it is quite good for the size, price, and overall functionality. It’s tougher than it looks and lives up to the Swiss Army knife tradition. It really fills the niche of providing a slightly limited multi tool solution in a dependable and compact package to a variety of issues that await. In conclusion, the Huntsman is not an exceptional multi tool knife but at its price point it is a very good multi tool knife capable of supporting a variety of adventures.
Useful knife for anywhere.
This tools in the knife are useful in the backyard, hiking, camping, in the garden, backpacking, or anywhere. Made of quality materials. I don’t know when I would ever use the leather punch or the little hook, but most of the other tools really are handy.
convenient multi-tool knife
I love the convenience of this knife. You get mulitple knives, scissors, a bottler opener, a wine bottle opener, tweezers, a toothpick and others all in one tool. It is small and fits in my pocket nicely. It is easy to open. I like the red color which makes it stand out and easy to find. I take this knife on all my camping trips.
Lots of options, Sharp knives!
I recieved this knife in red, not the wood color. The reason for the four stars is because some of the tools were very difficult to open. Two of them I had to use something else to pry them open. I did end up accidentally cutting myself because of the difficulty in opening the tools, however, the knives were very sharp which was good. The scissors worked great which I was impressed with. Sometimes the scissors don't cut well on utility knives. There was one tool that I could not figure out what it was for.
A little, tiny letdown.
I was so excited to get this. It is amazing, all the standard bells and whistles. However, I cannot get anything but the toothpick (LOL) out easily. This is tightened so much that I literally had to get ANOTHER tool to pry the tools open. This may be something that loosens with use but I almost injured myself the first couple of tries. I thought it was just me and even my big, tough husband had issues. Will keep around and hope that one days it’s as trusty and helpful as my grandpa’s.
Legendary quality and practical tools
The Swiss Army Huntsman knife is exactly the classic tool you picture when you hear the term "Swiss Army knife" or hear "Victorinox". When I was a kid in Scouts, I had an off-brand version of something like this and now I know what I was missing. The quality is superb. All of the tools close with a solid snap and each tool is strong for its respective task. The small and large blade are sharp and did all tasks I used them for. I really like the saw and it cut through wood for our firepit fairly easily. I also like having scissors on this knife. I have bad memories of cutting moleskin quickly and in the dark with a knife blade in the Army (bad boots and socks back then). When the first multitool with scissors came out, I got it instantly. So I still need scissors for peace of mind (even though I haven't used moleskin for over 25 years!). The great thing though is this knife weighs half of that multitool and if I don't need the pliers, I have been grabbing this instead as I head out the door for the day in my pocket or my backpack for short hikes. Just to test it, I did cut a piece of moleskin from my first aid kit and these scissors had no issue. The tweezers are also one of my favorites and the unique storage location they introduced so long ago is still perfect. For things I would change, the smooth red sides are more slippery than a textured handle of some other knifes. Also, I would love if the corkscrew was replaced by the Phillips screwdriver tool from the Tinker knife. If I am lugging a celebratory drink, it does not have a cork. It can be used for other things, I just find a Phillips driver more useful.
Solid lightweight multipurpose knife
The Swiss Army Huntsman is a decent multipurpose knife. I received this as a product to review and brought out camping. The blade is sharp and sturdy enough to do do some whittling for campfire tinder. I've always appreciated the tweezers built into knife and am happy this one has metal ones rather than plastic. The other tools; can opener, screw driver, and leather punch, work well when needed in a pinch but due to the size and ergonomics not something I'd want to use continuously. It's good for what it's made for, a lightweight multitool that can be carried anywhere.
Swiss Army Huntsman Knife
I carry my Swiss Army Huntsman Knife with me in my truck. In all honesty, it's too big to be a pocket knife, and too useful not to have with me, so my truck is the perfect spot for it. I have had to use the screwdriver a couple of times since I've had it, as well the scissors and tweezers (the knife is used constantly). The bottle opener is great and I've used it several times. I haven't used the corkscrew, but I will one of these days just because it's there! I remember getting my dad one of these when I was a kid, and he loved it. I never got one for myself, but after having one, I can't help but wonder why I waited. The scissors could be easier to use, sure, but I could also just carry a big pair of scissors with me. Instead, these are great for what they are - part of a very useful tool. I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.
Doesn't have tweezers and toothpick
I love it except the description on the REI site was changed after I purchased it. There is no tweezer or toothpick. The packaging shows that there is, but the official Swiss Army store said no.
