Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".
PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and ¾ inch shorter in total rise.
TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Would be great... if seams held up
These were exactly the fit and fabric type (lightweight, fast drying) I'd been looking for. Sadly, after only 2-3 wears/washes (gentle cycle and air dry) the stitching on the seams started coming out. And not just a little. They were very quickly unwearable.
Great, until it fell apart
I have purchased this exact item before and it was great. So I decided to buy three of the same size and style the next time I was at the store. Two out of the three that I just purchased have ripped at the seam within 2 months. I wear them maybe once a week, and wash and dry them as directed. My old ones are great, and I still wear them all the time. But I am pretty bummed my most recently purchased ones did not even make it 2 months.
No wedgies!!! These are my new favorite undies!
I HATE buying underwear because I always hate them for one reason or another. I sucked it up and bought a pair of these for my upcoming backpacking trip and gave them the full day test the other day. Not ONCE did I have to go digging for them...they stayed in place on my ample booty all day long...through walking the dog, running errands, riding 11 miles on my bike to do said errands...not once did they ride up. They literally feel like I have nothing on, which is absolutely awesome to me! I loved them so much I went right back to REI the next day and got another pair. I got the nomad brown and love the color.
Dry!
I am a Sweaty Betty, and these are the driest underwear I've tried for backpacking. I've worn Patagonia for years, but since these are thinner, the portions that do get sweaty - just like Patagonia's do - dry fastest. It's critical that my underwear dry quickly and stay as dry as possible during effort, because no one wants the swamp-butt that can lead to chafing. My backside is pretty strong and substantial, so the hipster doesn't give as much coverage, but I still loved them. I'm trying the bikini next.
cut has changed slightly
I purchased a few pair of these a couple of years ago and love them. I decided to grab a few more recently, but when I wore pair for a long run, I spent the first 10 miles pulling them down as they kept riding up my butt cheeks. Once I got good and sweaty, they seemed to stay in place. No chafing or other issues with them, they just fit a little different than my older pairs. Comparing the two (new on top, older on bottom), I see why. The slightly smaller waist is great, but the ever-so-slightly less coverage on the butt cheeks, not so much. I'll probably end up returning the other pairs I purchased. I also grabbed a pair of the briefs, and they fit fine but I much prefer a hipster to a full brief.
Weak seams
When I first tried these, I fell in love as they were exactly what I was looking for--great fitting and super soft active underwear. Unfortunately I immediately bought multiple pairs. I say unfortunately because about 6 wears/washes into the first pair I bought, the stitching is coming apart and now there is a nice hole. I was washing them in a normal cycle and air drying, for reference. Now I'm treating the remaining pairs as delicately as possible and hoping they last a little longer. Super disappointed in the quality, if REI can improve the durability (while still keeping the super soft fabric and fit!) I would happily buy more. But until then, I'm off to find another more durable pair of active underwear.
We are sorry for the performance you've experienced with this underwear, Rachael. Please be advised that our designers review this feedback and take it into consideration for future product improvements. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts on how we can improve.
Finally! My new favorite pair of undies... by far!
These seemed a bit pricey to me at first, but I used my dividend and now I'm hooked. I've long been on the hunt to find lower rise undies for my ample bottom that don't dig in around the leg opening. I absolutely love the fit and how lightweight these are. They are very comfortable even when it's hot and sticky. Plus, they are basically invisible and stay put under just about anything. The stitching on the leg opening of one pair came undone the first time wearing, but REI handled my return with no hassle. Every other pair has been great. They are now the first undies I reach for no matter the occasion. A little pricey, yes, but so worth it!
Seam came undone after three wears
I was excited about these underwear. I've worn them for three twelve hour shifts so far, extremely comfy the entire time. However, after the last wash one of the seams is already coming undone, to the point where they are now unwearable. This is very disappointing. I bought two pairs so hopefully the other won't fall apart so easily. It feels like a waste to spend nearly $20 on a pair of underwear and have them fall apart before I've even worn them four times. Despite the comfort I will not buy them again and I would not reccomend them.
Change in Crotch Reinforcement = :(
I have four pairs of this style, one bikini, and one thong. Three of my pairs of this style were purchased by end of February 2020 and they are 5 stars, no question! They are light, comfortable, machine-washable and machine-dryable, and dry quickly and don’t leave you with swamp crotch. However, I purchased one of the hipsters plus one bikini in April 2020 and the quick-drying, moisture-wicking crotch gusset was replaced with something that feels cotton-like. It might still be a synthetic but it is NOT quick-drying or moisture-wicking. Major bummer as I was ready to declare my never-ending love to this style and profess my loyalty forever. Please note, it is April in Minnesota and it just snowed. If I notice the material change when it is 30-40 out, I can only imagine it gets worse in summer! TLDR: Major bummer that REI changed the crotch material. Cheaper choice? Hope it gets changed back, these are no longer any more magical for swamp crotch than $4 Target undies.
Just okay...
I love the material - they're incredibly light and breathable. However, I have what I like to call "athletic glutes" and these ride up easily. Additionally, there is an inch of "waistband" at the top that is really loose and likes to fold or roll down. If you'll be wearing them under jeans or layers, give them a go. But if you're planning to wear them under tight or clingy clothes, I would advise against them.
