Nice ski gloves
These gloves have several nice features including: 1. Leather on the palm and fingers 2. Bungee cord to block out snow 3. Longer wrist cover for extra protection 4. Nice nylon interior for warmth My favorite thing about these gloves is how soft and flexible they are. This, combined with the leather on the palms, makes it easy to grip things like ski poles, shovel handles, etc. For reference, I have these gloves in a size medium (female, 5'5", 135 lbs) and think a small would be a better fit. These do seem better suited for 20+ degree weather, I don't think they would be warm enough for below 20 degrees, especially if there is wind chill.
Warm, dry, light-weight!
What a great pair of gloves! I am using these primarily for mountaineering and split boarding, so it's important that they fit comfortable over my GPS/Altimeter watch, I'm able to convert my split board between modes without taking them off, I'm able to take them on and off with damp hands, I'm able to operate locking biners and move things to and from my harness easily, and I can do some basic belaying with them on. These gloves performed great for all those things! The leather is very supple giving me great finger articulation as well as protecting my hands from sharp edges and pointy rocks. I used them on a couple trips so far as cold as 16F, and later in a downpour of rain, and my hands stayed warm and dry. I'm never disappointed with Arc'teryx gear :-D
Toasty warm fingers
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. The Arc’teryx Fission gloves are so well constructed and are so easy to take on and off without the liner shifting it is life-changing! I can immediately feel the heat from my hand when I slip these on. My hands are typically one of the first things to get cold and I’m not able to stay out in the elements much longer once this occurs. These keep my hands toasty and oh-so comfortable. The leather is durable, soft and pliable so your grip won’t be too bulky. As with everything I own that’s Arc’teryx my passion is in the details- the way the fabric feels, the quality and durability of the materials, the fastenings are all so smooth and easy to use- you won’t ever have to fight them. The only suggestion I would make is to incorporate a secure pocket on the back of the hands to hold a ski pass for accessible scanning in the lift line. I would usually wear a size medium glove and these fit well with just a little bit of extra room.
Breatheability over warmth
Not much snow yet, so I tried these on several hikes using trekking poles with temperatures around 15-30F. They were comfortable enough at around 30F but when temps got a bit lower you could definitely feel the breatheability of the glove and cold seeping into the outer finger and hand areas. The fingers are quite roomy and I could barely feel any thickness to the insulation. I'm sure the idea is to fit a liner glove inside, but the finger insulation lacks any real loft and the outer fabric is taut so if you articulate your fingers the fabric squeezes down to skin level which a liner wouldn't really help with. I did try adding a basic liner glove anyways but it didn't help much at all. I don't have any overmitts, but I'm sure they would add a bit of heat retention and protection. However, if some high-loft/heated liner and over-mitt are necessary for the function of the glove in even slightly colder/windier winter conditions then it should be included with the product or at least clearly stated as a necessity for the intended use and temperature rating. I'm not sure if this is intentional or an error in design, construction, quality control, or something else entirely. That being said, I can only grade the product that I have in hand and it feels subpar for something with a self-identified 10/10 warmth rating meant for windy snowsports conditions. As a standalone glove for it's intended use of winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, I would not recommend these gloves for anything but warmer days without suffient additional layers. For climbing the breatheability is great but I think a better fittedness as well as a wrist closure would be great when using tools. They do look sleek, have quality materials, and a self-proclaimed 10/10 warmth rating, but the materials/construction leave a lot to be desired and would not be a great choice for anything below about 15-20F. Overall, the glove fails to impress me as a standalone and is somewhat lost in a grey area between climbing/snowsports and warmth/breatheability. Do your homework before buying, I guess. Grade(s): 3/5 [ 2/5(warmth), 5/5(breatheability), 3/5(dexterity) ] Pros: - High quality materials that seem quite durable - Weather Resistant - Light Weight Cons: - *Insulation: The insulation seems to be lofty and good in the wrist area of the gloves but fails to impress me in the fingers and back of hands. It is highly compressed and has too little insulation material and/or not enough space to loft up given the way it is stitched together. Since it's extremely breatheable, the insulation provides very little heat retention in the fingers and the gloves feel roomy and cool even at warmer temperatures despite their overall bulk. - *Finger insulation gets compressed to near uselessness on back of fingers when holding tools, poles, etc. - Features: No nose wipe on back of glove, no pocket for glove warmer, no wrist closure. Pro/Con(Depending on preference): - *Breatheability. These seem to be extremly breatheable gloves and more often than not, especially in the fingers, this is a bad thing in downhill sports. However, certain conditions and activities could make this a good thing. Warmer weather winter sports or extremly high exertion activities like climbing/backcountry are probably the ideal place for these gloves. - Roomy finger area: could fit a liner inside easily or you may need to size down for a better fit. * = Critical Issues TL;DR: Great breatheability but not warm enough as a standalone winter sports glove for colder temperatures.
Great water and wind resistance
I have given these gloves a thorough although unusual testing. It’s August so insulated winter gloves were a challenge to test out during the summer. I found the best way to test them out was to take them on an ATV trip in Colorado, as well as to use them while driving my motorcycle. The gloves were incredibly dry. They held up against rain, and hail and wind while riding. Additionally, at 12,300 feet I found snow to play with. They stayed dry through all of it! They are not super warm though. At 40 degrees, in the rain while riding at highway speed on my motorcycle, my fingers started to feel a bit chilly. I think they would be ideal for active winter activity, when you don’t want your hands to sweat. I’m looking forward to snowshoeing in them. I think the breathability of the Gortex along with the insulation will make them great for this type of activity. The styling is great! They have leather in all the places that get the most wear, and a stretch fabric as the base material so they fit comfortably, and don’t give you numb fingers when gripping an ATV or motorcycle throttle. My one complaint is sizing. I have large hands, and normally wear a men’s medium or a large/extra large in women’s. These are a unisex glove. I currently have a size medium which is great for width, but the fingers seem disproportionately long. I would recommend these to friends, but tell them to try them on at a store since the sizing is unusual.
Frozen Fingers
These gloves look nice, are well built, and give you decent dexterity despite having a lot of leather in their construction. You can ski and drive in them without much trouble. Sadly they aren't all that warm. Within minutes of being out in freezing or below you'll feel the chill in your fingers. For the price I expected more. These don't really insulate any better than a decent pair of gloves that cost half as much. If you have trouble with gloves leaving you with cold fingers look elsewhere. Its back to mittens for me while my search for warmth in a glove continues.
Best gloves I've used
Wore these for 5 days in conditions ranging from 35 degrees F to -3. Waterproofing excellent. Dexterity excellent. Gauntlet fits perfectly over ski jacket. Others reviews pointed out that they are not super warm. I found that below 15 degrees F a pair of fleece liner gloves helps, but below 15, I plan on using Black Diamond mittens with hand warmers. My hands do get cold easily. My wife ordered a pair of XS - which fit the circumference of her hands just fine - however the fingers were about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch too long (others have commented on sizing issues as these are unisex sizing). Too bad, because she otherwise loved them.
Stop hesitating and just buy them, no regrets!
Absolutely amazing gloves, I love everything about them, and they keep your fingers extremely toasty. The only scenario I've not tested them in is in a ski day with rain or epic slush, but they've been very waterproof in all other scenarios so I'd expect them to hold up there. I was a bit nervous to spend the extra money these cost to buy in at first, and was looking at Hestra since they were a bit cheaper, but ultimately I just couldn't see white leather gloves staying anything close to white over time, and also wasn't interested in the maintenance those gloves required. Money well spent.
Warm?
I have been searching for truly warm gloves for everyday cold outdoor activities. Shoveling, walking the dog, etc. It took me a while to drop down $200.00 for these but I took the chance. MY FINGERS WERE FROZEN with only 20 degrees outside, and this was only within an hour! Believe another reviewer that has a very specific review and timeline showing these do NOT do the job as advertised. The only think they have going for them is less bulky, flexible, and maybe wind/water resistant. If you are looking for truly warm gloves, keep looking. These are not them.
Great for cold weather backpacking
Very warm gloves. I use them for cold weather backpacking. They are especially great on a cold morning breaking camp. Surprisingly good dexterity considering the insulation.
