Worth it
I work in construction. 10 hours outside in high winds and temps down to -40° with no available heat. I work very hard for my money and typically wouldn't spend this much on clothing, yet I'm convinced that I would not survive (literally) without these high quality wool base layers. The XS is a true to size and doesn't slide down a 24" waist.

The Worst $120 Baselayer You Could Possibly Buy
If I could give these a negative rating, I absolutely would. I had high hopes for them seeing as how they’re supposed to be super warm and seamless, and I was sorely disappointed. Worst thing about these pants: the terribly cheap rolled hem stitch in the waistband that will rub and chafe the entire day, even if you’re not wearing a pack. They didn’t use a flatlock or an overlock seam (a type of flat seam that’s often used in pricier activewear), and it’s evident in how these lay underneath even an ultralight set of pants. I had lightweight Norrona Lofoten ski bibs over the top of these, and the incredibly poorly designed waistband seam chafed my hip bones raw within 1 1/2 days of skiing (to the point I had to put on bandaids so I could wear pants). They’re also see-through, which wouldn’t be a big deal if they weren’t $120 and allegedly seamless with ‘heat zones’. Speaking of seamless — you can’t call a baselayer seamless if it does indeed have seams. That’s like ‘alternative facts’ being an actual thing. Secondly, the length on these is laughable. Why does a size medium have a 32” inseam and the size L have a 34”?! What sort of 6’2” Amazonian are these designed for? On the technical front, they don’t fit in ski boots that have been molded because they’re not fitted, and there’s so much leftover material when I rolled the ankles up that it looked and felt like I was wearing knee pads. Thirdly, these aren’t even very soft. They’re technically merino wool, but somewhere in that manufacturing process, they must’ve skipped a few steps because I have a lot of merino items from Smartwool as well as other brands like Icebreaker, Surly, Swiftwick, Ortovox, Lululemon, Vince, etc and these aren’t even close to being the same quality. Anyway — don’t waste your cash. After leaving the mountain early because I had skin rubbing off on Friday and cancelling a ski day on Saturday due to the ridiculous waistband, I returned mine as soon as we could get to REI today and just ordered some of the Ortovox 180s.

This is my second pair! Comfortable/warm and soft!

This is my second pair and I couldn't be happier with them! First off-I'm allergic to wool, so I NEVER have wool next to my skin.I tried these on in the store and they were so comfy and soft I decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did-I've had the black and these teal colored ones for over 4 months and I wear them to the gym, under pants when hiking, and just around the house! I am 5'10", usually wear size 10, and often have trouble finding any pants that are long enough for me. I bought size Large are they are PERFECT! They even seem to be holding up to washings-so far so good! 5 stars all the way!

Won't overheat

Received free product

My first impression was that with the pattern this base layer would be pretty worn as tights with a long sweater. I've worn these on warmer and colder days. They breathe well and even on the warmer days I didn't get too hot. They're very comfortable and movement isn't restricted. The elastic in the waist band started out wide and after several wearings began to roll. They're still comfortable. They're long on me and I have to roll them up at the bottom but I am only 5'1". They wash well and maintained their shape.

Midweight layering, but should come in longs

Received free product

I am 5'9" and about 135-140lbs....I tried out some mediums and like most tights that don't come in longs, they were a bit too short in the inseam. They still worked, but would have been more comfortable a little longer. If smartwool made these in longs, they would be great. The designs in the fabric make them cooler than they would otherwise be. I used them mainly at nighttime while camping during August in Colorado, South Dakota, and Wyoming and they did the trick.

Comfortable and warm, fit true to size

I really like these. I'm in Alaska, and can where them outside in winter, though not for long, because the print on them gives way to wind chill. Still, that means they are really warm, and I'm getting another pair! They are a good base layer. They are 3 inches short inseam on me,but I'm 5'10, with a 35' inseam, so kind of expected. I weigh 145 and got medium's, and they fit well. They are high-rise up to the waist, so I will roll them down once if I care to have a tight look. one more thing, they are snug on my calves - a bit tight. They do loosen slightly throughout the day. I think fit is true to size overall.

Extreme Granny High Rise

I love the material these are made of, but the cut is horrendous. HUGE granny crotch. These go well over my belly button, and the waist band on a size M puts an uncomfortable amount of pressure on my 27” (circumference) waistline. I tried rolling them down, but the compression is way too uncomfortable. Gah, why can’t anyone make thermal leggings with the same flattering shapes as yoga leggings??! We have the technology!!! I’m so tired of these overly tight narrow waistbands. Who likes those??

A New Take on Baselayers

Received free product

These baselayer bottoms are interesting. The intraknit gives them a sportier feel than the previous smartwool baselayer bottoms I have. They have a more contemporary feel, almost like wool yoga pants. They seem to run small. I’m a woman’s size 6 and the medium was tight (I usually wear a small).

Keeps you warm but holes/thin

I run outdoors in Michigan year round. After purchasing a smartwool 250 base layer top and absolutely loving it, I decided to purchase the intraknit bottoms for runs under 30 degrees. After about a month, I already am seeing small holes in the fabric and generally am surprised that the knit is thinner where I want it to be thicker/warmer-- like my outer upper thighs. I do think the intraknit fabric is a bit scratchier than the 250 baselayer, which I think is really soft and not itchy at all. The pants have kept me warm and I like the stretchy fabric around the knees (I also prefer a higher waist pant to jog in... though at 5'9 this means I pull them up around my calves so that they're high waisted on me) but I'm thinking about returning them and getting the original 250 baselayer, seems like they'd be warmer and thicker and less prone to holes.

Great performance fit, comfort, and warmth!

Received free product

I love this Smartwool Merino base layer for its fit, comfort, and warmth. I wore this base layer in high 40 deg F weather and it more than adequately kept me warm. The fit is fantastic with the very minor exception of the waistband which - for me - fitted a tad too tight. Otherwise the fit is perfect and the fabric is comfortable against the skin. The fabric moves and articulates with the body creating a great performance base layer for cold weather hiking, backpacking, etc. I was impressed with the mesh ventilation as it kept me feeling comfortable as my body heated up. As far as aesthetics, I love the look of this base layer (yes, it's underneath clothing...) with its geometric mesh design. I am happy Smartwool used a merino wool waistband in contrast to the underwear-like elastic waistband. Overall, this is a fantastic performance base layer which I will covet and wear for many years. Thank you to the folks at Smartwool for another great merino base layer!

holes

After only a handful of wears holes appear on the design portions all over the garment. Very disappointing that it doesn’t last long.
