Perfect travel bag

I love the bag because of how functional it is. The top straps are long enough to actually carry it it under your arm (common problem with these types of bags) and the backpack straps that can be tucked away or deployed is genius. It's perfect for conferences, groceries, walking around town, bike commutes, and trips to the dog park (did I give away the fact I'm a millennial?) I bought the black but I'm back to buy one with more pizzazz. I've owned mine for 2 years and used it almost daily with very little wear. When it gets disguising I toss it in the washer in a mesh bag, let drip dry, and it comes out good as new. This bag is very much worth the money.

Missing key features
Nancy

I used this tote on a 3 week trip to Australia and it is missing key features. There is no latch for keys, so they can easily fall out. The side water bottle pockets are too big, and there are no cinch cords to hold the bottles in. I lost two water bottles because they fell out of the pockets. When the bag is not being used as a back pack, the extra length on the straps dangles, with no easy way to tie them up. I would not buy this bag again. It is not up to the standards of Patagonia.

Bag OR backpack and so lightweight

I love it. This is a super lightweight backpack/bag. That was my main reason for ordering. It will NOT have structure unless you put things with structure inside it - like a packing cube. Or structural items. And it won’t support 30-40 lbs of stuff comfortably. But I use it as an extra bag when I travel and pack a mix of items inside making sure that I also pack in some soft clothing to nest heavy items into. Love the borealis color scheme. Also like the internal zipper pocket plus the additional zipper pocket on the exterior. And the zipper that closes over the top of the bag. I guess I am a zipper woman. It fits my husband just as well as it fits me.

Perfect diaper bag

I spent months sifting through blogs trying to find the perfect diaper bag and landed on this bag. I love it. I have used this as a diaper bag for almost 2 years and it’s been fantastic. The bag is so light and fits a ton of stuff. I like that the shoulder straps aren’t bulky like other backpacks. I like the straight across zipper so stuff doesn’t fall out. The tote handles are helpful for quickly grabbing the bag. It has 2 huge elastic side pockets for water bottles and wipes packs. Just add some organizing pouches and a small bottle cooler and this is the best bag out there. Looking forward to many more years of great use.

When every ounce counts

Just bought a 2nd one! The first went on a backpacking/sailing trip through Scotland. I needed an extremely lightweight, non-bulky, but strong pack to use as my hand carry. It held a water bottle, raingear, and even my bulky wellies without being denied boarding for strict size and wt restrictions on incountry flights. The parachute material reduces weight and bulk and it keeps items dry. Zippered pockets kept things accessable. When not needed it hardly took up space in my full backpack and the straps were less bulky than other packs. Love that it could be held as a tote or worn as a backpack for day hikes on shore. I researched a lot before I left and this was the best I found.

Previous version was much better all-round

This is the new iteration of the Ultralight Black Hole Tote, the only improvement is the horizontal front zipper. In the previous version it's vertical and things can fall out of the outer pocket. Other than that this new version is much worse. The sternum strap strangles you even when set at the lowest point, because the pack just slides down your back with the lightest load in it (the previous version had at hip belt). The compression straps at the top don't do much and they're only needed, because this new version is very deep. To compensate they made it too short, for example to carry a regular laptop when needed. All in all, this new version is now just a tote and the backpack option has become useless.

commuter heaven

I just got this today but let me tell you. I went after work carrying my laptops in my leather backpack. I was so scared when I couldn't find them because they were on the rack in "packed" mode. Trying on the gold the laptops I carry rest so nicely against my back it's like night and day. Other pros: It's a tote! This will never not be useful even if it was just for groceries it'd be useful. It's a seat cushion! (Includes some foam for that mode) It's not too long (I'm 5'3) I knew from seeing it's mom approved in the reviews I'd like it. Even if my work gives me a third laptop I won't be afraid, it's that comfortable.

Obsessed with this bag as a diaper bag and beyond!

I've only used this for about a month and I can say I absolutely love everything about the bag from its weight, functionality, having two ways to carry (tote and backpack), and it fits everything I need and more. I currently use this bag as a diaper bag for a toddler and baby. Because it is a tote, I do have an insert (purchased separately) that helps me organize the various things I need for my kids. It will be a great bag after the kids have grown where I can use as a purse, hiking bag, travel bag, carry on, etc. It is extremely versatile and totally worth it.

Surprisingly study bag

I wasn't expecting much from a packable bag, but was pleasantly surprised. The bag is sturdy and the straps are comfortable. It did well in brief Seattle rain. The shoulder straps are the perfect length for me (5'4") and I didn't have to hold onto them, they stayed up on their own. I would buy this bag again. The electric blue color is eye catching without being gaudy (if you are worried about that). I find that some of the recent Patagonia colors look like kindergartener's backpacks (it's cool if you are into that).

Perfect everyday bag

I have carried this tote most days since I bought it six months ago. I use it as a daily carry, to bring along my water bottle and wallet and planner and toiletries bag when I head to work. It’s comfortable hanging on my shoulder as a tote; I’ve also used the backpack straps when I’m carrying more or heading out for a walk, but I prefer it tote-style. The load doesn’t distribute very evenly when it’s worn as a backpack. I have loved the tote so much that I’m getting one for my sister as a gift - she’ll use it more as a daily purse/snack/diaper bag, since she has kids. She has been wanting this tote since she saw mine. I have this product in a beautiful blue (lines with orange), and I love the color. Highly recommend!

I would not recommend this pack

I was super excited to get this pack for travel. It is super light and packs way down to take up very little space in your suitcase or bigger backpack. However, using it has not been all that great. The straps to adjust the shoulder do not stay put and slip all while walking. The padded part of the shoulder straps ride more on my back making the adjusting straps cut into my arm pits. The chest strap ends up at the throat even at the lowest adjustment. And honestly, there are just too darn many straps on this thing that are always getting in the way. I love Patagonia but I think this item needs some major remodeling.
