I purchased a pair of these as a base layer for cold-weather whitewater kayaking and for cold-weather camping. I've only used them a short while, but have been very impressed. I typically wear pants in my sleeping bag when camping overnight in cold weather, but that's never comfortable. On a recent trip, I switched to these bottoms as "pajamas" in my bag when temps dropped just below freezing, and I was toasty warm and amazingly comfortable. Once dawn came, I put my pants on over them until temps rose - they fit very well as a base layer. Not sure what else to say - I'm very picky, but am so far very pleased with these.
I've never liked bottom layers and usually conduct my winter activities in synthetic gym pants, however these things fit good enough to stop all that. The crotch is loose and the the calves are snug, they fit perfectly over a long pair of ski socks and the material is insanely soft. The odor control is a plus for long expeditions or a day on the slopes. They're breathable enough to keep body temps regulated while exerting high energy in snow conditions, wearing them under a pair of shorts in 40 degrees was pleasant, I would not depend on them for arctic conditions but anything else, this is a go to.
This bse layer kept me warm on summit of Kilimanjaro in 2018
Work in a metal building with both ends open on concrete. Live in kansas so it is a wind tunnel. I am comfortable down to 30 degrees anything lower an i need another layer . They' wick moisture if we get busy. 5'7" 260 lb xl works great .love patagonia products should last a long time. Would recomend
A great base layer that holds up well and keeps you mighty warm. Though a bit heavy for backpacking purposes.
Another great product from Patagonia. I have used several versions of the Patagonia's Capilene base layer bottom and this one is far superior. You will not go wrong by purchasing and using this product.
I bought these to go under my drysuit when paddling in cold water, along with another base layer that I already had. When I tested it at a water temperature of 47F, the insulation was great, so I'm happy with my purchase. The only gotcha is the size - it seems a little on the large side. For me (5' 11", 155lbs) medium size might have been more appropriate. But it's still ok because I wear it on top of another base layer.
I won’t ski with anything else… I can’t put in words how much I love the Capilene base layers. They are warm, breathable and sweat-wicking. I’ve skied in them from about 5°F to 55°F, and they’ve been great in all conditions. They’ve held about for about 25 ski days so far, and been in the wash countless times now without any sign of pilling.
Surprisingly warm for such a light layer. Felt great under rainpants and hiking pants on cooler and windier days. Cut is athletic and just about perfect for me - cuffs at ankles are nicely tapered and will not fall below your heel, but are not restrictive. Would absolutely recommend these.
I owned a silk weight Patagonia Capilene base layer bottom before this purchase and it was great. Somehow I don't think this midweight one is much different in terms of warmth. In general it meets my expectation. It's not too warm, but shall be enough for skiing days. I washed it once and it keeps the form. A minor complaint is the fly. It's positioned a little high and the opening is on the smaller side. Maybe it's just me.
