Thank you REI for carrying 3X, now you just need to carry many more cute clothes and get over fatphobia. I really like these, the merino is soft not itchy and breathes unlike synthetics. The workmanship is excellent. Also unlike synthetics these will not cause plastic micro pollutions - would love to see more cotton and wool and less petroleum product wear. These are true to half size larger in the waist, love that they have a high inseam. The legs are not fitted however and are loose so would not probably work very well under jeans. I wear mine as leggings and love them for that. They are also super long - a plus for the amazons but baggy ankles for the petite. - still love them though they could use a few tweeks. I wouldn't mind if they had pockets. Will buy more.
These are super cozy for lounge wear...though it's hard to justify the price for that. the fit is too far off to be used for hiking or anything active. the waist is correct, but the rest is too large & they are very very long. If you're 5'9+ these are probably the right length for you, for anyone shorter be prepared for bulky excess around your ankles. I sized up in these because the rise in the XL is WAY too low. The rise on the 2X is a decent mid rise but the baggy legs mean they're no good for active wear.
Love that they had these in plus size. I actually sized down from 2x to 1x. They were incredibly warm, I wore them as a base layer under snow pants while hiking a glacier and under jeans in Reykjavik. They worked well for me sizing down, but they were still very long so I folded over the ends. I'm 5'2. I liked the REI ones better for most of the trip, but these were warmer for the very cold days/activities and they looked more like leggings if I wore them on there own.
I love how soft and cozy these are! These are perfect for cold weather nights on the trail. I wouldn't wear them under anything while actively hiking though because of the excess length. I'm not tall, just fat lol.
These have saved me through an arctic freeze. They are a great under layer. A bit see through when bending over so I don't wear outside by themselves. The sizing is a bit big for me, the ankles are not fitted. They fit like a really cozy pant with a straoght leg. The XL is tighter in the crotch and gave me camel toe. Size L has shorter torso, XL has longer torso but the crotch fit is the same for those 2 sizes. 1X is where there's more room in the crotch. But they have been so helpful as a second layer i have kept them and just wear looser pants over instead of leggings (those still work, it's just harder because of the looseness of these).
What can I say? These are the long johns of my dreams. I love the high waist, they're actually long enough, they're soft, warm and breathable, yadayadayada. You know, all the things we love about Smartwool, for your legs. I wear them around the house, camping, and when the weather gets a bit nicer they'll be my backpacking sleep leggings.
Thanks to REI and Smartwool for partnering to offer plus sizes. I finally have base layers that actually fit well. I love merino wool and always wanted these - I am overjoyed that they're now made in my size! I'm looking forward to being much warmer on my next camping trip.
I have a pair of minus 32 base layer pants that have thick ankle openings. These Smartwool pants do not. We are experiencing a prolonged arctic blast in Michigan's UP and my other base layers weren't cutting it. I got these Smartwool bottoms a couple weeks ago and am very happy with them. As stated I love the single layer ankle and the waist (which is a bit big for me) is a set-on waist. Not a elasticized waist. Even though it's big on me it is a more comfortable waist style. I wear these under a pair of fleece lined tech pants from LLBean and the combo has kept me comfortable while outside feeding wildlife which typically takes me an hour or so. I am so happy I am coming back for a top!
Perfect weight.I took a star off because they are too long.
I've wanted a pair of Smartwool base layer tights for a long time, and I was lucky to catch these on sale during the holiday season. They are soft and thin but well made and warm. I've worn them as a base layer under pants and as fancy pajama bottoms for sleeping and lounging around the house during a recent cold snap. The adjustable waist 'drawstring' feature is great because I found them a teensy bit larger than typical 3x bottoms. My only request would be high rise instead of mid rise for plus size. Inseam was perfect for me. For reference I am 5'9' and I carry my weight in my belly.
