Though I haven't fired it up yet, I'm confident it will work well. I, for the life of me, don't know how anyone would be able get this packed with an 8 oz fuel canister. Since I'll be camping by myself and was planning on taking the 4 oz fuel anyway to save weight. With the 40 oz, I was able to get a camp soap bottle inside, the stove in it's stuff sack and the spoon/fork on the outside. Works for me.
Very handy, and at least for me, very reliable, although I carry matches and a lighter in case the igniter fails. Almost very compact. But: you can't actually close the lid on the kit with an 8oz fuel canister, unless you leave the plastic lid off the canister; exposing the pot and canister threads to damage. As others mentioned, the silicon ring can heat up and fall off with high flame. Requires mindfulness that may be missing if you're tired or in a hurry. I know of two people who managed to burn up the plastic cup because they left it on the pot. One ruined her burner in the process, too. This cup should be a different color; probably yellow. Again, a mindfulness issue, esp. in the dark.
This is an excellent stove kit. The spark lighting system is very handy for easy lighting, but definitely not a substitute for carrying lighter and matches. I love the pot/measuring cup combo that is included, however a word of caution: When I used this stove the first time I completely forgot about the measuring cup which the pot thoughtfully nests into perfectly making it effectively invisible to the naked eye. You have to slide it off the pot before you set it over the flame and as I was proudly monitoring my first boil noticed drips of melting plastic and leaping flames from the bottom of the measuring cup that I had forgot to remove before placing the pot over the flame. Admittedly, this is total user error, but not one I would be surprised to hear others have made.
Really happy with this purchase. Became the main stove on recent 4-day backpack in the Sierras. Everyone wanted to use my stove with easy to light feature. Stood up to all winds and weather. Great piece of gear!
Contrary to another reviewer, I had no problem fitting everything in the included put with an 8oz fuel canister. It is tight, but works when packed exactly as the exploded picture on the box shows. Canister upside-down without the cap, stove and pot holder without the separate stuff-sack. When all packet together in the included mesh bag, it all stays together and nice and tight in my backpack. My igniter works perfectly and the stove boils water super fast (and new design is better in the wind than pocket rocket II). I compared this to wind burner and mini-mo, but like the flexibility of a burner that can work with other pots and pans (plus we can only get 8oz canisters on Oahu, so those stoves require the fuel canister to be packed outside of the pot, taking up more space on my pack).
I set this up on my picnic table with an MSR IsoPro fuel canister (purchased elsewhere) & it fired right up. Very powerful stove & easy to set up. Only 4 stars as it’s impossible to fit it all back into the container. If I take the cap off the fuel canister & put it in upside down, it kinda works but I don’t want to leave off the cap. I also purchased an MSR fuel canister stand & that works great to stabilize the stove. But, if you try & put the included pot grabber back in the pot, no way does it fit. So I put it along with the stand in the net bag it comes in. Come on MSR, just add a centimeter to the height of the pot & we can easily fit it all in there!
Burner works great and the overall design of the pot with the bowl looked cool but in practice it is just not all that great. The silicone grip should be removed altogether if you plan on using this. It slips down just boiling 2 cups of water and I almost melted everything. Luckily I was paying attention but wost case... I don't even want to think about the dangers of a fuel canister on fire. My recommendation, skip this set and just buy the burner separate or toss the ring and count on only using the separate pot clamp. I plan on getting a separate pot with a handle that folds out.
This is my first backpacking stove and I really labored over my decision, but I feel like I made the right choice. This stove is easy to use, water boils super fast, and every nests together beautifully. I can also fit a small lighter and a fuel can stabilizer. The mesh bag keeps everything tight and together in my pack. The whole set up is a bit large, but when you consider it includes 1-2 bowls, fuel, stove, etc, it's really not so bad.
Broke it in with a 5 day solo trip. Could have used the smaller model, solo I'm only boiling 1/2 liter at a time. Deluxe Rocket has better wind resistance, worked very well, and I also like that I can store an 8 oz fuel bottle vs the 4 oz. Using stove two/three times per day this was an advantage.
This isnt a full review, that is still to come, but i wanted to get the word out. The MSR windburner duo/1.8l coffee press works great in this pot. The duo lid also fits if anyone cares. Press habdle cant go through this lid but that doesn’t matter to me, and it is a little taller than the pot when assembled, again that doesn’t matter to me. What does matter is the french press works!
