Great system, one flaw
I bought this to keep my water cool as I hike as well as prevent it from freezing if tempatures are low. With this on the outside of my pack (I understand you shouldn't put it on the outside), for 2 hours in midday sun shinning on it, the water in the pack stayed as cool as it started. The water in the mouthpiece tube tends to heat up a little probably due to the dark color on the insulation (this is the only flaw I have found). Also I rested my pack on the ground with this underneath all the weight and no leaks at all. The bladder is pretty easy to take out of the insulating sleeve and reconnecting the tube after putting the bladder back in hasn't been tough for me. I haven't tested this out in below freezing temperatures yet but in hot weather (85°F plus sunshine) it was fine. Overall satisfied and wouldn't think of returning.
Added luxury to my hike
I bought this impromptu during the middle of a several day hiking trip in the pacific north west. The first hike, I just had my regular, non-insulated hydration pack and only drank a quarter of the water in it, which is not nearly enough for the long hikes I was doing. Once I got this and could keep my water cold, I drank all the water in my hydration pack for the rest of the hikes. It is easy to use and it is so much more refreshing to drink cold water which definitely helps me to drink more and stay hydrated. The hikes I did were 8+ hours and my water was cool the whole time. The ice may have been melted towards the end of the day, but the water was still cool. I’m really glad I purchased this and am sure I will get a lot of use out of it. I have already recommended it to several friends.
Good start but needs work
Insulated bag is good (not too bulky and keeps things cold), hose is also good (prefer material over the hoses on camelback & osprey bags), but the hose detaches from the reservoir with the slightest tug…. And all 3L dump right into your bag (no check valve). This has happened on multiple occasions during only a couple weeks of use. Very frustrating. Very disappointed
Great for below freezing temperatures !
Performs great in cold weather been down to -20 this week and it didn’t freeze when inside my pack surrounded by spare clothing. I upgraded to the more insulated tube which also performed great. The valve design worries me a little I’d like it to be larger but so far great !
hose reeatedly pulled off hose barb
Being as careful as I coud be, the hose pulled off the hose barb each time I lowered the reservoir into the reservoir compartment of my backpack, dumping water. I salvaged the trip by purchasing and using a stainless steel hose clamp, but the bulky hose clamp is not an ideal solution. I have a different HydraPak reservoir with a non-insulated tube. That tube stays firmly attached to the hose barb.
If you love cold water you'll love this!!
Absolutely love this thing. I filled it up with ice water when I left home. 2 hour drive to trailhead. 4 hours on the mountain. water was still ice cold. Well worth it.
Durable and well designed closure system.
Durable and well designed closure system. I got it for my wife for her pack while skating. Its taken a few falls and crashes and survived.
Don’t waste your money!
Bought this back in July, have used it on my day hiking trips and backpacking trips. It works well for day trips, if you aren’t stuffing your bag to the its max and compressing it. For my backpacking trips, as you can imagine, I have to bring more and compress it tight which unfortunately pushes the water up and out of the opening you fill it from. It leaked into its insulated bag then pooled into my hyperlite pack and made my gear smell like mildew and also waste my precious water- thats the very last thing I need especially when water isn’t accessible. The insulated wrapping around the hose is pretty much useless, since I’m in sunny Southern California, the black insulation keeps the water piping hot- especially in the summer. Although, the Reservoir bag does work affectively.
Best bladder pack I've used!
Had this for roughly 6ish months now and it has gotten amazing use. I have had 0 issues with it and would highly recommend it. Only used it a couple times in the cold where my water dod not freeze (i was doing blowbacks after every drink tho) in the heat it performed very well and i had cool water the duration of most of my hikes.
Not suitable for winter activities below freezing
I had to return- did not work as I hoped. I wanted an insulated bladder for winter hiking with handsfree hydration- the price tag was worth it to me if it worked. I tested in various freezing temps (from -10 to +22 degrees) prior to taking on the trails and all tests failed. As suspected, the hose and valve iced up within a few hours. This product would be suitable for cold, above 32 degree days or to keep water cold in the summer.
