Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Awesome sleeping bag!

I feel claustrophobic in mummy style sleeping bags and was looking for a bag that packs down small but still gives me plenty of room. I'm so happy I found this bag! I'm a side sleeper so I really like how roomy it is through the hips. I'm 5'5" and the length of the regular bag was perfect for me. And best of all, this bag zips together with my fiancé's Sea to Summit bag. We camped last weekend and the bag kept me perfectly warm (45 degrees overnight). I really like how this bag zips from both sides - so when our bags were zipped together, it was still easy for me to get out of my bag. I've only slept in this bag once so far but am looking forward to many more!

Very Impressed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This bag is absolutely amazing! My feet are usually cold so I wasn’t sure about having such a large toe box. I was wrong… I was toasty warm in mid to low 30s, sleeping in thin pants and a t-shirt. I did a bit of cowboy camping in Paria Canyon (Utah/Arizona) with this bag paired with my Recharge XL Sleeping Pad and was super comfortable. I was amazed that there was no cold air seeping in from the zippers. Not only have they designed this bag to have the zippers overlap, they have zippers on both sides. As well, the toe box has a separate zipper in case you have a warmer night and need to air out the toes or kick out a leg. I was super impressed. It’s hard for me to sleep in tight spaces so the flexibility to sleep however I wanted and still have room to switch sides, sleep on my back, or sleep on my stomach without feeling confined was great. The bag has straps so attaching it around my sleeping pad made it to where it did not move at all through the night even though I was. Overall hugely impressed!

Love

I love this bag because it is warm, comfortable, and roomy for a tall user that also packs reasonably small. Craig has used this bag for 4 years or so. Craig is 6'4", so being tall; it fits him well and is roomy. Craig tends to sleep on his side, which this bag allows for, as opposed to a mummy bag. Although this is a larger bag, it packs small, and Craig uses it for motorcycle travel (where size and ounces matter). It's nice to have zippers on both sides; easy in and out. Has held up well with very regular use. Craig likes the ability to unzip the foot area for added ventilation when it's hot. It's a great bag. I've been trying to get Katie to switch from her Big Agnes Bag to a Sea to Summit Bag because I like it so much.

After 40 years of buying

After 40 years of buying at least 20 different sleeping bags I've finally found the one. This has several great features that I really haven't found elsewhere. It packs up surprisingly small for a "basecamp" bag, smaller than my previous backpacking bags excepting a 50° i use during warm weather. Secondly this has plenty of shoulder girth, which is rare. I can get both arms in comfortably, I have a 48" chest. and have had a hard time finding a bag that fits me well. Lastly it's good for anything from 50-20°. I bought the 10° bag and it might be a bit cold at that temperature, but at 20° it does great. With two side zippers and a foot zipper you can make it work in warm temps too, or use it as a comforter. Lastly it's a got a functional hood you'll actually use. A 5 * bag.

I'm 6'3" so I purchased

I'm 6'3" so I purchased the large size 20 degree bag. I sleep primarily on my side. Super comfortable! Very roomy. Lots of foot and shoulder room too. It's light for it's size and packs down in it's compression sack nicely. The two straps on the back are a nice feature that allow you to attach the bag to your sleeping pad/mattress. Wearing a t-shirt and shorts it was very comfy at ~40F. I camp primarily off my motorcycle so really looking forward to more trips!

Love this bag, of course!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] In all my years of travel and outdoor living, this bag is the one I am most excited about and pleased to own. It's actually warmer than I need mostbof the time living in the South, but I also picked up a Coolmax liner, a silk liner, and a cotton liner. That way I can utilize the customize and modular nature of this high-tech bag to suit my needs for each trip. This is the largest item in my outdoor kit, but well worth it!

Great for cold weather

I needed a cold-weather bag for the winter. The only one I had was a huge and heavy so wanted one I could more easily carry into the wilderness For the warmth, it gives this bag packs amazingly small. Very comfortable in the mid-30s. The zipper area has tape around it that makes a nice seal to hold in heat. It has a pullout holder and attaches to a sleeping pad so your sleeping arrangement does not come apart in the night.

Warm and roomy!

I’m a side sleeper and I run cold, so I wanted something that was roomy but still warm. This fits the bill! Plenty of room to sleep in whatever weird shape I want. I got the 10° version and used it on a weekend when the overnight low was 24°—right at the bottom end of the bag’s “comfort” rating. It was a little cool for me at that temperature but overall I was really happy with how warm it was.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] 6’1 210lbs. For me, it’s Extremely Comfortable and roomy. I’m a Wildland Firefighter, so it will be getting put to good use. I like that you Can unzip at your feet for ventilation. It won’t always be cold out. Most of the summer it’s still pretty warm at night in California. I like those features that allow you to make adjustments for the temperature.

This is one of the

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is one of the most comfortable bags I’ve ever owned second only to my Sea to Summit Amplitude down bag. I’m a big guy and have more than enough room in this bag. This bag is very warm and packs down to a very reasonable size. I even keep this bag in my vehicle in the winter, just in case I would end up stranded somewhere.
