This mounting system makes moving my two kayaks around very easy. the rubber and padding help the boats stay in place while you tie them down. the included tie downs work well, the rubber pads that fit over the metal clips help protect the boats. My only complaint about this product is that it does not use the one key system at all, and for such an expensive mounting system I wish it had a good way to really lock to my cross bars. Aside from any potential security concerns though, I would highly recommend if you want a single solution to handle hauling 1 or two boats.

This might work for some equipment but does a very poor job for 2 WIlderness Tsunami 120 kayaks. These appear to be too big to place next to one another (they are to deep). These were tied onto the racks exactly as the instructions demonstrated. And if you look closely, you can see how the bottom of the boat can easily slip.

Great Product for us!

Purchased the Thule Compass and installed on our Jeep Wrangler Sport a year ago. We have carried our two kayaks on the jeep and towed behind our motorhome through several state, in many weather conditions with not issues. We love it. The only issue and we know it going into it is the lifting of the kayaks onto the racks. Currently in our sixties and still able with the use of a small ladder. Wife and I have the process down and it take about 15 minutes to get both loaded. At some point we may transition to a Hullavator Pro for ease of lifting and , wife and I have the process downinstallation.

Poorly made component

The rack holds our kayaks well. Unfortunately, on the first use, one of the gray elongated knobs to tighten the rack stripped. The mechanism functions, but we have to use a wrench when it was designed to be hand tightened. It is not a huge problem, since we had a wrench with us when it happened, but we did spend $500 on the system. We have been trying to rectify this with Thule for three months and counting. They finally shipped a new knob but there is no obvious way to remove the original. The second knob on the racks is showing signs of wear and won’t last much longer. REI hasn’t had this item in stock or we would have exchanged this. Thule’s customer service has been a disappointment given their reputation.

Difficult to use

I bought this as a less expensive and more compact way to carry two small (10’) kayaks but was thoroughly frustrated most of the time. I found, like BobS, that the boats had a tendency to slip into the caved in part of the rubber pad and fall away from the carrier as his is shown doing, maybe 30% of the time. The straps also gave me fits because they constantly twisted and then became impossible to adjust after I put them over the boats. Once the second boat is up there, the straps slots can’t be reached. Having two straps through each slot made tangling and biding a lot more likely. Much happier with two pairs of J hooks.

Underwhelmed

I had high hopes for this rack. I figured that Thule is a top name and I couldn't go wrong. It is difficult to screw on and off, when you remove the rack. My Yakima rack is much easier. The clip for the straps often gets caught, requiring to reach high on the roof to untangle. I thought it was a good idea to be able to hold two Kayaks. Turns out you need to put it in the middle of the crossbar and stand the Kayaks on their side at 90 degree angles. It is worth spending the money for two J style folding racks instead of this. I ended up buying a second rack, the Jaylow from Yakima and I am much happier

Complete dangerous junk with huge pricetag

Don't get suckered into it I tried to return it as soon as I got it. I spoke to the manager he just kept leading promises sending me another piece to add to this one that the still does not work and a coupon for 40% off next purchase on and on all he did was run out the time to return. Now I'm stuck with this big hunk of junk on top of my car. Actually two hunks of junk now in over well over $1,000. They put little notches in the tie-down holders as soon as you put tension on them they slide to the middle Notch and pop out very not well thought-out. I will attached pictures the first one they sent me did not even fit to 10 ft regular kayaks now I got another one same stupid Notch design hook it up just how the instruction show. As soon as you pull it hand tight with their straps the strap slide out of the little notches in there and The Kayaks go off of your car skipping down the road. Complete unsafe junk overpriced will not be able to return I tried since the beginning....look at pics just a little force the strap holders bebd becauae the notches in them...the straps shoot out your kayak is now flopping down the rd or killing someone on the highway. Im going to sue thule

Overall, solid kayak rack

I’ve had this rack for about a year and have used it on numerous occasions hauling 1-2 10ft kayaks. Only issue is that both plastic wing nuts have popped off. One within a month of purchasing and the other after 7months of use. We now bring a wrench with us to tighten and loosen.

Good rack.

Easy to use with one or two kayaks. My kayaks are around 40lbs each and I haven't had any issues. All the tie down straps have worked well.

So far, so good

I ordered this rack with some reservations as I own two 12' Wilderness Systems Tsunamis and this is exactly the combination another reviewer found the rack unable to handle. So far, I have been able to mount my two kayaks and travel to and from a lake about 1 hour distant. Much of these trips were at speeds of 65-75 mph, which I would expect to be pretty effective at dislodging poorly secured boats. I had no problems at all: The kayaks were as solidly attached to the rack and car at the end of each trip as at its start. I don't know what accounts for these different experiences. Though the kayaks are from different years, I would think the platform (vehicle) more important. I drive a Subaru Outback whereas the previous reviewer appears to drive a pickup.
