Essential Reading - Brilliantly Done
If you venture in any kind of vertical snowy terrain this comprehensive guide is an essential read. Clearly explanatory without being overly technical, discusses all aspects of avalanches, from the evolution of snow crystals in a snowpack to avoiding and reacting to a snowy torrent. Lots of excellent photography and illustrations. Highly recommended for everyone from grizzled winter mountaineers to back-country beginners.

I reread this book every year before ski season. This book greatly complements Avy 1 and Avy 2. If you are venturing into the backcountry, read this book first.
