More space for activities!
I was looking at getting the original Warrior, but I never wanted to take up my full roof. This is an amazing compromise. I have used it many times to free up space in my Truckbead and allow for more items to be carried. I can effectivley carry a Yeti 45 and a large HD tote in this rack. It allows space for my Awning, and Rocket box 11 or Jaylow bars. I could even configure my rack to carry more. I am looking at getting the shovel/axe mount as well for summer and winter use and accessibility. If needed, you can also mount a kayak or any other Yakima product to the skinny warrior, but my truck is already tall enough and it wouldn't allow for the larger totes.
Yakima Skinnyboi
The body of the cargo box is two pieces divided at the middle lengthwise. The bolts attach to nuts at four points, one inside each tube. This sounds straightforward, but the nuts are not fixed and will move from where they were when you start joining the two large pieces together. What should be a simple process is mired in frustration and swear words. The box I wanted to put in it fits perfectly, so whatareyagonnado?
Good but not perfect
I purchased both the basket and extension, and my expectations were high considering the price. Both items were of the same sturdy construction, but the connections for the sections are questionable. There are plastic gadgets inside the tubes to hold the nuts for the connecting screws, but one of mine had slipped down the tube and had to be retrieved. After that, the screw could not be fully tightened or removed. I suspect the nut was spinning in the plastic. These tube joints are the weak spots in the basket, and I am considering having my local welder permanently fasten the whole thing together. That solution would, at least, give me peace of mind.
Perfect for my '21 Prius
Very nice cargo basket! Fit my '21 Prius Prime with Factory cross bars even though the Yakima website says it doesn't. Installation was a breeze and the basket feels very high quality. As expensive as it was, you definitely get what you pay for. Installing the locks (sold separately) was not very easy as they seem to be slightly larger than the supplied brackets. I have it on the passenger side with a Thule bike rack and wheel holder on the driver side of my cross bars. More than enough space. Also added a small U lock to secure it to my cross bars because the Yakima locks for this product feel very flimsy. Can't wait to take this thing in my next car camping trip!
Be forewarned: Very limited fit
I have factory cross bars on my VW GTI and I checked all the measurements to make sure it would fit before I purchased the Skinny Warrior basket. It should have fit but it doesn't! They never tell you this in any of the product info, but the support brackets that attach the basket to your crossbars are not adjustable. Unlike a bike carrier or a rooftop box, the brackets do not slide forward or back. They can attach to different spots on the basket grid, but those spots are 5 inches apart, with no in between. So the span of the support brackets has to line up with the span of your crossbars-- something that is very unlikely! Perhaps you could move your crossbars to match the position of the support brackets. But my crossbars cannot be moved as they attach to anchor points on the car. So it's just impossible to attach. :(
Does the job!
I bought this basket to go on my 2013 VW GTI, with aftermarket bars. I have Whispbar cross bars (essentially the same as the Yakima Aero line) and they worked OK with the basket. Basket is sturdy and pretty easy to assemble. I chose this skinny basket so that I could mount it next to my Yakima HighRoad bike rack which ended up working well. The biggest downside to this basket is the limited fit. It is listed as fitting cross bars spread over a certain range, which is sort of true. The mounting hardware fits between the bottom "rungs" of the basket, meaning there are designated spots they can go. If you can move the crossbars on your car to accommodate, it's not too big of an issue, but if your bars are set (or you have something else up there) you might end up having to shift a whole lot around to get things to fit. Basically you have a mounting spot every 3inches and you'll need to adjust your car bars to match.
Could be better, for the money
Purchased the Skinny Warrior to mount next to my Sky Box. Fits with plenty of room on 60” core bars and is super easy to install if you can move your supports to fit the basket. Overall, this basket will come in very handy, but it leaves a number of things to be desired in terms of build quality. I’ll give Yakima credit for making sturdy accessories, the box is bomber … But their clamps and security are generally garbage due to all-plastic connector pieces—The only steel in the clamps is the cover plate that hooks the basket and keeps it in place. Without locking brackets (extra $70), anyone can remove the entire basket within one minute flat. I purchased two of the locking brackets and positioned them on the top inside to make them harder to access. The locking brackets are thin plastic and could be easily circumvented. ALL critical mounting hardware for this basket is plastic and leaves enough exposed for a crafty thief to remove the basket with minimal effort even WITH the locking brackets installed. It’s among the worst security implementations for attachments I’ve seen from Yakima. They are cutting corners exactly where they shouldn’t be cutting corners and for the price of their kit, it’s unconscionable. Couple other important notes: 1) The basket comes in two pieces which join in the middle and are attached via screws to expanding mounting nut gadgets inside the tubes. These gadgets are NOT secured in the tubes—two of the tubes have stoppers that prevent the nuts from being pushed down the tube, two do not. One of the nut gadgets had slipped out of position and was loose in the tube. I had to lift and drop one half of the basket a dozen times to jar the nut back into the tube, then pull it forward with a needle nose pliers to get it back into position. 2) The connecting joints between the two halves are not airtight because the expanding plastic nuts inside the tubes apply pressure in one direction and force the tubes out of perfect alignment which creates a slight gap for water to enter. The expanding nuts do not provide a seal. You would think this isn’t a big deal, except that the inside of the tubes are NOT sealed against corrosion. The basket is made of steel with a powder coating on the exterior to help prevent corrosion. If any moisture gets inside the tube it will corrode from the inside out. Two of the connecting joints face the direction of travel, making sealing this gap all the more important. I used waterproof Flex Tape to seal the joints. Like another reviewer, I’m considering finding a welder to permanently solve the issue.
Skinnywarrior Basket - NOT ADJUSTABLE
I was gifted this a while ago and just now got around to attempting to install it for a camping trip this weekend. I am unable to get it to fit on my rack as there are fixed mounting points and there is no adjustability on this basket. Yakima also managed to leave me short a screw so the basket doesn't properly secure to itself and the machining on one of the clamps has the wrong size nut in it, so I'm left with a screw that doesn't actually secure into anything at all. Would need to go to a hardware store to get a properly sized nut and an additional screw. I shouldn't have to buy anything additional to install this incredibly expensive piece of equipment. Very disappointed in this product, this is the first piece of Yakima equipment I am upset with and I'm unable to return it as it is outside of the REI return policy.
Works fine, limited adjustability.
Works fine, perhaps a little expensive for what you get. You may need to adjust your cross bars to make it work. Limited adjustability since it has to sit on top of your crossbars a certain way. HD Bars are thick, so just barely clamps down on those. I'm a little worried the mounting bolds will shear over time since there is so much expose thread due to the thick bars. We'll see... Otherwise, looks good and functional. Have it mounted over a truck bed using the Outpost HD and it fits in a standard 7' garage when not loaded up.
just right.....
Needed a basket to fit on the rack between my awning and tent. This works out great, no real change to my wind noise levels. Only issue was a slight dent from shipping at some point that required a little ‘encouragement’ to slide nicely together. Love this basket though does just what I wanted.
