Arrived used and dirty
While I have no doubt this filter would work well looking at other reviews I can only give 1 star as the service with REI has been terrible. I got this as a gift for Christmas and the item showed up obviously used and covered in dirt, tree sap, hair, and other grime. The tubes are stained and there is obvious signs of previous use with little regard for care of the item. As the filter cannot be seen I can hardly imagine what the insides look like and I don’t dare use it. After sending an email to REI I was told I could not send it back for another one and if I wanted to buy a new one I would not get it for the sale price I bought it at. Even worse I was told I could not get any store credit for the item, and if I wanted to send it back it would cost $9 to do so! What kind of service is that? I’m completely disappointed with my purchase and don’t intend on buying anything else from REI in the future
Great for lazy filtering
This filter is nice because there is no poorly made bag to squeeze, or a heavy pump to fight. Instead, you just hang it, put the outflow tube in your water bottle, and go about other tasks while gravity does the work. Since the bag is so big (10L), multiple people can get filtered water with one full bag. This make it especially nice for group trips. Unfortunately, the black rubber strips that are at the top of the bag are not affixed well enough to the bag. These are critical in the fact they are what the webbing attach to. Before long, mine will be completely off, and I won't be able to hang the bag at all. I have owned the bag for something like 8 months and have around 30 nights on the trail over that time. I have submitted a warranty claim to MSR, but was disappointed in the instant response that says it could be 8 weeks before they even respond.
so easy
ive used it on 2 separate week long trips. i love it. i dont normally review stuff so take it from me, this this is amazing. so imagine your at isle royale national park, you walk down to superior from your campsite to see everyone else pumping water. they are sitting there just pumping and pumping like the little zombies they are. you notice the jealousy as other groups notice you just dip a large red bag in the water and walk off. you then bring your auto flow bag back to camp and hang it up, n guess what? after filling up bottles, you leave the bag hanging up at camp, because you now have water on tap! this is so easy to use.(although i do admit ive never taken it apart to clean it). it works like a charm, its easier and faster than other methods. i love having water on tap when ever i want.
Makes Drinkable Water While a You Do Other Things
I have used this filter for 4 years and it works great. The red bag has a prefilter built in that keeps sand, algae and debris and other particulates from clogging up the filter. So the filter actually lasts longer than several other brands that friends used (on the same trips). I added a 4 litre collection bag with an easy to pour spigot with a quick connect to the output tube so it is easy to serve water for a group of people. As shown in the attached photos. I used a Source 4litre wide mouth bag an source quick connect kit but a 4 litre MSR dromedary bag could be used and the shower adaptor kit valve could be used instead. The filter still tests good after over 1000 litres of water but I am careful to clean it regularly and to flush it out and dry it if its sitting longer than a week between canoe camping trips. Apparently the old and new filters are the same, the newer one is just lighter and apparently more durable.
Invaluable Gear, Very Happy
Just got back from a 6 day trip to the BWCA, and all I can say is this water filter system was absolutely flawless once you learn to clear bubbles. I read several reviews about the filter not working or stop working or slow filtering but after a poor experience with a Katadyn on the same trip I thought I'd try it out. So glad I did. First things first, you need to be smarter than a bubble and read the instructions to get the system to work properly. There is a prefilter built into the bag that prevents large sediment from even getting to the filter. When you add water to the bag or prime the filter air tends to accumulate behind that filter (which you can easily see) and can be cleared by just flicking the bag with your finger. Once those bubbles are cleared water flows as intended to the filter. The real filter needs to be cleared of air also, but that is covered in the instructions. Back flushing is simple. I probably ran about 50L through between each flushing and didn't notice any degradation in performance. Great piece of gear, so glad I purchased it. You should too if you are reading this.
Appears Indestructable
I only bought this for the bag after reading some online specs and it lives up to its toughness. The strap/buckle system looks like it will break, but it holds 20 pounds of water with no problem. There is a nice fine-mesh screen inside that prohibits particulates from reaching the filter so that is a plus. I will eventually use a Sawyer Mini with this as the included filter doesn't have the same filter life as a Sawyer. One negative is that you have to leave everything connected for your entire trip to prevent cross-contamination. There are no caps for the filter ends if you disconnected the hoses. However, the mesh bag more than allows for easy storage with extra space for a Sawyer Mini and back-flushing syringe. This is way easier than pumping and way easier to clean at the end of a trip. It will filter and fill bottles at nearly the speed of my Katadyn pump filter--so really not alot of waiting. If you get tired of filtering, this may be for you.
Reservoir leaked out of the box
Couldn't test it in the field because the reservoir had a hole in the bottom when I tested it in my kitchen. Glad it happened in my kitchen and not on the trail, and also glad I have backup water treatment systems. Since they are out of stock I could not try a replacement.
No more sore arms
Have used it on a three day river trip with six people and it was awesome, we set up camp and let it do it’s thing. It’s not the all filter but for river tripping or base camping it’s perfect.Ive seen some of the critical reviews commenting on to much backflushing, it’s a piece of cake just hang the clean water and let it run, it’s a 1” filter if it wasn’t getting clogged it wouldn’t be filtering anything. The filter rocks
Had nothing but trouble
Did the Juan de fuca trail and had nothing but trouble with this thing. Was never easy as we were always trying to fiddle with it to get the water flowing. Had to keep playing with air pressures, tried ""purging"" it, tried back flowing the filter which led to it just dripping out of the other end of the filter. The water we took from the creek was fast flowing and clean so there wasn't even much to filter. The one time there was visible sediment in the reservoir, the water still tasted like dirt after passing through the filter. On top on everything the bag would leak water out of the top if you filled it to the max mark on the bag.
Worked until it didn’t
Definitely a step up from squeezing bags of water through other systems. The bag is easy to use and the never had a problem with the straps. The weak point was the filter. From one day to the next the filter literally would not pass more than a couple drops at a time. I tried blowing through it, back washing it, and nothing worked. This was in the middle of a trip in the Eastern Sierras. Thank God I always carry a back up Sawyer because I would have been in a hurt locker. It’s a great (5 stars…maybe) system that works until it doesn’t. Unfortunately I have to return it and look for something that won’t leave me stranded.
