Ive been looking for my own backpacking sleeping bag and get terribly cold at 5’3 and 100lbs. I was willing to put down some money for something super-extra-warm (I used coupons and gift cards anyways). I’ve only tried it in 40 degree weather, but I actually got hot in it! I had to stick my head and arms out of it most of the night. It’s also nice and short (women’s regular at 5’6). I’m not big enough to heat up extra bag space. It’s fluffy, the zipper seems durable, and I like the yoke to tuck around my neck.
I am 5'6" and weight 150 lbs, I ordered the women's regular and it's perfect. I am a backpacker, not ultralight thought,so this was perfect for me. I had ordered this bag two years ago and sent it back because I did not like the zipper position-straight up and down. I get hot at night so need to open my bag a little, I do not like my backside hanging out, I just want cool air. The zipper position on this bag is perfect because it curves toward the front, not leaving my backside hanging out. It has just enough shoulder room to feel comfortable and not smothered. I wish the draft collar was removable but I'll live with it. It's a keeper.
I went on 3 trips before I wrote this review. The sleeping bag is as warm as advertised. I am a cold sleeper and felt toasty in it. I reduced it by one star because the draft collar drives me crazy. The wormy ends are constantly in my nose or mouth when I don’t zip up the bag all the way. When it is zipped up I don’t like it to have always something on my throat. This collar is only made for closed sleeping bags, but in real life you go through the phases, it is too warm to close and in the night you close all the way. I will cut the collar in half.
I had a Magma 10 men's regular, but switched to the newer Magma 15 in women's long mainly for the right side zipper and higher fill weight (24oz vs 17oz). Both are the exact same dimensions. I'm 5'10" and 190lbs. The newer men's Magma 15 adds 3" in shoulder girth vs the previous Magma 10, but loses 5oz of fill. REI should just make these options instead of trying to tailor by gender (different lengths/widths, different fills, and right vs left zip). Bag is very warm and lofts easily. Where the 10 was just ok in the low 30s/upper 20s, this is warm easily down to 20. This is a steal when it's on-sale.
I'm going to comment on fit for tall-ish men considering this bag. The amount of down is comparable to a 0-degree men's bag, which makes this bag a bargain during members' sales and is why I purchased it. I'm 187cm tall (just shy of 6'2"), 95kg (210 lbs), and I wear a 43-long suit jacket with 34" waist. I can fit snugly but comfortably while wearing a heavy down jacket in the woman's long of this bag. That said, I'm a back sleeper who doesn't move. It wouldn't work for me if I wanted room to move around or sleep on my side. If I was any bigger, I might have trouble manipulating the zipper closed. In other words, I'd consider myself to be just about the maximum size for this bag. For my purposes, that makes this bag a bargain for winter backpacking. YMMV
I did my entire thru hike of the Appalachian Trail with this bag, and while it was too hot to use on some nights, it kept me so warm once I got into the cold November weather. No issues with moisture; when it did get a little wet, it dried surprisingly quickly and kept me warm all the while. It's light and packs down small. It fit tight enough to ensure there would be no cold air pockets, but loose enough that I could move around (I'm a fidgety sleeper). My favorite feature was the combo of the hood and the collar that traps warm air in. I'm posting this review later on because I'm now shopping for a synthetic bag for warmer nights, and I wanted to revisit this posting so I could find something similar. Definitely sticking with an REI brand bag.
I want to love this bag, maybe one day I will love this bag, my big issue is it’s pretty narrow and if you’re not on the leaner or petite side you might be snug in it. I wear size 10/12 jeans and am 5’2 and my hips are pretty taut, making the down less poofy and thus colder hips. Makes me sad this bag doesn’t even come in multiple widths and that the basic size of it seems to assume such a (literally) narrow body type of a camper/backpacker. Maybe multiple widths with future models so customers don’t have to feel too fat to camp :(
I was hesitant to purchase this bag at first, because I was unsure of how well it would perform. Let me tell you I was not let down. The temperature outside was 20 degrees Fahrenheit and the snow began to fall down. Once I got into the bag, within 5 minutes, I was feeling very warm all over. I am a young man, and needed a bag that could perform well for cold weather nights here in New England. I feel as though this bag could perform well in even colder temps. This bag paired with the Neo X-therm pad worked great while sleeping on top of the combination of ice and snow. I can definitely reccomend this bag for cold weather camping enthusiasts. What’s great too, is the bag compresses down pretty small into its stuff stack, allowing a lot more free space in my backpack.
Slept in this bag in Montana for the week. Temperatures only dropped to the 50s, but I slept comfortably in just the bag and no tent (in thermals with minimal sleeping pad). It was extra fluffy which made it feel cozy. I didn't feel too buggled up even though it was a bummy. I am 5'8 and if I was slightly taller, it might not have been long enough. I love this bag!
I used this sleeping bag for my entire PCT hike. I'm 5'7" and opted for the long version, which was a good choice. I used this in conjunction with the Thermarest NeoAir XTherm. My setup kept me warm and cozy in the Cascades and the Sierra, and worked well enough as a blanket if I unzipped it and tossed it over me on warmer nights. My only complaints were the neck yoke stitching isn't the strongest and I accidentally tore through it one morning, and the zipper stopped zipping closed about 2,000 miles into my hike. FYI I replaced my broken zipper bag with a new one of the same model. I'd absolutely recommend this sleeping bag for folks who won't be using it nearly every night for months on end, but you may want to look for something a bit sturdier for a thru hike.
