Perfect city park/beach pack.
I wanted to build the ultimate beach/park pack for NYC. Like most of my friends, I do not have a car but I do have a bike. I’m old enough where I want to be well-stocked for my outdoor hangs and not have the day ruined by hunger, heat exhaustion or dehydration. But carrying all that stuff on a hot day is super annoying and not really feasible without a car (which, again, i do not have nor do any of my friends). But with this pack I am able to carry everything I need in a tidy, self contained pack. It has plenty of room in the cooler—I usually pack a huge tupperware of pasta salad and a refrigerated bag of wine and there’s room for more. That’s enough for a party of like, 6 people. But there’s also dry space so I don’t have to carry a second bag for my beach blanket (nomadix, recommend), towel changing poncho (amazon), and other random stuff Like sunscreen, book, etc. The stretchy side pockets are great for my insulated water bottle, which I fill with ice water, and I strap my sun-shade (I recommended ZiggyShade over Neso bc they’re cheaper, lighter, and have this nice stretchy bag that makes it easy to pack up when done) under the top and just strap my folding stadium seat to the top handle—I could probably secure it better but this is fine (also I recommend Kelty bc they were the cheapest i found and also have this super simple fold-open design). I’m not paid by anyone here btw I’m just a dork for getting gear right to make life easy. I have all this stuff basically packed as a go-bag this summer and I just keep it in my closet. Not sure I would recommend this for a hike just because it’s pretty heavy and not really built to be super ergonomic. I also wouldn’t bring a full picnic and sun shade on a hike bc that’s just not the point for me but it could work if you really want that. Not recommended for extended wilderness hiking. Not pictured: ice packs. Use ice packs for the cooler instead of bags of ice. Not only will it mean there’s no leaking or moisture but they’re also way more lightweight. I got 4 super thin ones on Amazon that i put on the back and sides and they work super well. I’m if you want to bring ice cream or ice for cocktails, look for an insulated tupperware, they rule.
5 stars
Best fishing bag ive owned. All my gear fits perfectly and the cooler keeps everything cold in the arizona heat. The straps feel solid and its comfortable to where even when loaded up. I use this bag for hiking and fishing around the lakes and rivers. I highly recommend this bag.
DOES NOT LEAK!
I read reviews about the cooler leaking so I wasn’t sure about it. I used it for a day of trout fishing and no leaks. Then I used it to fly cheese from Pennsylvania to Yucatán. It didn’t leak and my yeti packs were still cold when I landed. I wouldn’t fill it with water or regular ice because it has a zipper and water could probably escape there if you’re walking with it but the cooler itself doesn’t leak when used properly. This is a great pack for beach trips, traveling, or fishing. I traveled for over 20 hours and she was still ice cold. Pack it tight with yeti ice and keep it closed as much as possible.
Wanted to love it
This seemed perfect for my family. We planned to take it on bike rides in the bike trailer or wear it to the park for picnics. The top would hold dry supplies and baby stuff while the bottom held ice, drinks and things kept cold. It did exactly that until the ice started to melt. Before long, the bottom was saturated and leaking through. By the time I realized it, it had soaked my trailer and things in it. I guess an ice pack may work better, but I believe the condensation would still go through. Very disappointed in this pack. It is a great concept, just not good for it’s intended use.
The only bag we need for the beach.
I use this for our weekly beach trip. I can carry all the gear for two adults and two kids. Cans and lunch with a cool pack for in the cooler which I prep by keeping in the freezer the night before. Water bottles go in the side pouches. Thin, compact, travel style towels and a bag of chips go in the dry bag on top. Sunscreen, bandaid, lip balm go in the zippered lid. Folding beach chairs and umbrella are strapped to the outside of the pack using the clip straps. It's heavy at this point but I'm not particularly strong and can easily walk a half mile or so to get to the sand. I've had this for three years now and it's used every single Sunday, still going strong.
Great idea, needs a hip belt.
Overall I love this design. The cooler works great with it without the pack and is the perfect size for a day trip or for snacks on a long drive. The side pockets are plenty large for a nalgene each and deep enough to hold one securely. The shoulder straps and back panel are well padded and the pack it’s self is fairly light. My only real complaint is that it doesn’t have a hip belt. Even just some webbing would be nice. The pack has some frame support because of the foam in the back panel and it’s a cooler so it’s obviously going to be pretty hefty when loaded, so to me it seems obvious that a pack like this should have a hip belt, but it doesn’t. Honesty the pack is probably worth buying simply for the soft cooler, but REI, if you rod ate this design in the future, be sure to include a hip belt. Ideally a removable or stowable one.
Great for day lake trips, awesome as pumping mom
I bought 2 backpacks prior to this for work as I was breastfeeding and pumping and they both didn’t fit my needs. I used to use this for lake trips, river trips for my beers and snacks, but then it dawned on me to try this pack that I previously used for recreation and it is THE BEST. I bring both my spectra and Elvie stride and a charger, along with my 11in iPad, and lots of other little things to work and it fits everything great!! I wish I would have thought of it sooner. If you’re a pumping mom on the go, that needs to carry a little extra, this bag is a need.
A+ for traveling moms!
This backpack is great for airline travel with Breastmilk/breast pump. It can be an ‘extra’ carry-on item because it’s a medical device. Fits under the seat in front of you. The pump (spectra) fits beautifully in the top part- and in the bottom, I have stored a weeks worth of frozen milk with some ice packs and traveled 12+hours from California to Maine with some ice crystals remaining! A downside is the breast pump isn’t very protected in the top part, and it was often heavier than the bottom section which made carrying and opening a little awkward.
Perfect for work!
I typically pack 2 full meals and snacks to take to work with me (plus ice packs and multiple containers). This lunchbox/backpack is perfect. I previously used a hydro flask soft sided cooler but it would get so heavy to carry around. I felt like the bag lady with a big cooler, purse, water bottle, coffee, etc. I can fit everything I need in this bag plus it’s actually really comfortable to wear. The extra padding on the straps and the back make a huge difference.
Sweet bag
I really like the backpack. I wish it had a waterproof zipper. It works great for normal usage and keeps the inside of the cooler pouch super cool for most daily usage. however, if the ice melts to the point of just becoming water, the water can slosh it's way through the zipper pretty easily. This isn't a super common issue as the cooler keeps ice really well, but can be an issue at the end of the day when you're walking back to your car. That being said, it works awesome as a beach day bag or with a frozen water bottle inside is great for picking up groceries from the store in.
