Great mattress, worth the money
The price point for this sleeping pad made it a big investment so I did lots of research before purchase. I found rave reviews on an array of forums from a diverse range of users - campers and full-time nomads. Like them, I use it for sleeping in my car and car camping (too heavy for backpacking). I love the comfort - thick and firm, but not hard. My taller and heavier friend used it for sleeping on the deck with her grandchildren and loved it. If weight isn't an issue and you're looking for a well-built product from an ethical company, this is the sleeping pad for you.
Next-Level Comfort
I've had a lot of pads, but this is the most comfortable of them all. Setup was pretty easy, it self inflates about 80% of the way, then 6 or 8 big puffs fills it up. The down side is durable, the sleeping side is a super soft foam. Long and wide... can't think of anything I don't like. Turns my two-person tent in to a one person, hahaha!
awesome
I think I have the generation before this, but I'm sure the new one is just as good. Love this sleeping pad, and so does my girlfriend. I made her get one of her own because I was tired of her stealing mine all the time. Super comfortable. A bit bulky but a small price to pay for the comfort. Only complaint is that it doesn't self inflate 100%, which i know is typical of most self inflating pads, so nothing unique against this one. I just found I enjoyed using it a lot more once I got a cheap hand pump to fill it 100% with air.
If you want to take
If you want to take your car camping to the next level of comfort, then you should consider investing in a MondoKing 3D Sleeping Pad. The width and length are very generous. I don’t ever feel the ground through the pad. I’ve slept on it in very cold weather (30s Fahrenheit) and kept warm. Inflation is made simple with their bag. However, I have purchased an air pump to fill this pad. It does require a lot of air and takes a little bit of time to hand pump. Especially when I have to do two pads. I do not recommend Therm-a-rest’s mini pump for this pad. It’s too weak. I think I could sleep on this pad full time. It’s that comfortable.
Worked great - twice
This product works great when it works, but it only worked twice. Then the it won't keep air. It was only used inside a tent with multiple tarps/footprints below it. The valves are cheap plastic and Therm-a-rest is giving me the run around on warranty issues. I paid a premium for a premium product and got an inferior product.
Almost like sleeping at home
I bought this mattress for the nights camping during the AIDS/Lifecycle (a 7 day, 545 mile charity bicycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles) because I knew I needed something comfortable for my sore muscles to sleep on. It was fantastic. It inflated quickly (maybe 10-15 minutes max), and the sleeping experience was very close to my Tempurpedic mattress at home. I'm a 5'7" 140lb woman and had more than enough room. I could comfortably lay on my side and never felt the ground. It was also plenty warm (I'm a cold sleeper). Many of the campsites were pitted with gopher holes, but I never felt anything but flat mattress. It was also easy to deflate in the mornings (when following the recommendations in the manual). It's not a small mattress by any means. It does pack up reasonably well, but is not meant for backpacking or other situations where space is an issue (all my gear was transported for me during the ride). It would even double as a comfortable guest mattress.
Comfortable but difficult to inflate
I frequently camp for work and our group of three bought MondoKings. On the plus side, it is very comfortable and the one-way valve makes deflation a snap. Five stars there. But this is anything but a self-inflating pad even if you leave the valve open for a couple of hours. It takes 3-10 minutes to inflate, and that assumes the stuff sack (used as a bellows) doesn't get any holes. One star there. Not a deal-breaker if you can just leave it inflated for, say, a week straight. But if you plan to move camps each day look elsewhere so that you can spend your time camping instead of inflating your pad.
the best bed of all
This Thermorest is the thickest softest best sleeping pad made. Way better than air mattress. Better than memory foam on a bed. Great insulation for warmth. Rather expensive. Heavy and big to store. Rolling it up is a challenge. You need to buy straps to help hold in rolled shape so it will fit in bag. Overall for my car camping it’s great. GREAT. Buy no other. I do expect it to last years.
Just Like Home
I was hesitant to get a 'comfort' thermarest. To date, I have owned the bare minimum and kept that as light weight gear. I skeptically ordered the MondoKing 3D before going on a multi week car camping trip to mountain bike. This is the most comfortable mattress ever. I am a princess with the pea. I need a firm mattress or else will have back pain upon waking and not sleep well. I literally slept as well with the MondoKing 3D as I do at home. (for those who don't care for a firm mattress, you have control of how much air you put in and how firm it is) The vertical sidewall, combined with the integrated sheet and quilt (sold separately) are absolute heaven. It is better than sleeping in your bed at home!
This thing is car camping heaven
I frequently camp out of my car or often even in the back of it on weekend ski and climbing trips. Thing takes a bit of time to inflate, but once it does it's amazingly comfortable. It has a high R-value that will keep you insulated from the ground comfy and warm on the coldest nights. The first time you are letting it self inflate I found it helped to stand if up on it's side with both valves open, then flip it to its other side after an hour or two. It just puts less pressure on the pad in the direction it's trying to inflate and allows the foam inside to expand more freely.
