I bought this for my mom originally. She's 90 and still loves camping, but can't backpack anymore. Then I bought one for my husband and finally wised up and bought one for myself! My husband and I put our 2 together, put on a fitted sheet, top sheet, & down comforter and we are styling!Mine is the newest and has the new valve that you twist to release the air so your not losing air as you take another breath to blow it up. Yeah, I make sure that I have marked that as mine. Makes it easier and faster to blow it up.
I have a Prolite that I use for multiday backpacking and mountaineering trip and I was using a huge inflatable matress for car camping. But the inconvienance of having to have an electric pump and power source lead me to give this bad boy a try. I could not be happier. sleeps just as well as my big air matress and is a lot more convienant to car and inflate. to my surprise it isn't that much bigger than the prolite once its in the included stuff sack. I will certainly bring it instead of the prolite when not going super lite and fast.
See if the foam fill can be made with a denser strip 18"" wide, centered at the mid point of its length. Better support for hip bones there. But not too dense to roll up fairly easily for back packing to base camp. Maybe similar to bi-injection of different densities of plastic in ski boots during manufacture for different rigidity in the flex of the boots while skiing. Yes, I still am an instructor. And an Architect. The valve may be a cause of the air leakage, Seams seem to be OK. You people do good design and good work. Thanks.
I have these sleeping pads for 5 years There are great!!!
I've owned two of the earlier version of Base Camp (different valve) for thirty years. I had them tightly rolled sitting in my garage for 12. Recently I unrolled them, opened the valves and left them on my office floor.. They self-inflated, though it took a little longer than it used to. It took five puffs of air to get them very firm. Then I put about 50 lbs of weights on them.A week later they haven't deflated one bit. What a great product!
I used it for a night sleeping in temperatures that got as low as 27 degrees F with a sleeping bag rated for 20. I thought I'd be freezing but with a few hand warmers it was so cozy. I'd previously camped in temperatures in the low to mid 30s with the same sleeping bag, extra blankets but no sleeping pad and I froze that night. Definitely made a difference
We use these to supplement the mattress in our rooftop tent on our expedition trailer. They tuck into the space under our dual sleeping bag and stay in place fairly well. We open the valves when closing up the tent and the air escapes with the pressure from the tent closed. They added a lot of comfort to our sleeping. So far so good.
I have used this pad through all 4 seasons and I cannot speak enough positives. It is super durable, super easy to inflate, and keeps you warm even in the dead winters of Colorado. The size is also awesome, and packs down very well, although not the smallest for you minimalist backpackers. Still a great investment for any camper!
Great large, comfortable, and warm pad. It packs large, but I often strap it to the bottom or top of my pack when I backpack in the shoulder seasons, or at high elevation in the summer. Easy to pull on a sled while xcountry skiing overnights and worth its weight for warmth. Durable and comfortable.
I had hopes for this pad for better protection on uneven surfaces but it's no better than our Alps pad. Will try an air pad next.
