These are not the same pattern as the OG hipkini. The leg holes are larger and they have more of a hi-rise profile with narrower butt coverage. See photos. Kinda a granny panty, but serviceable for hiking
I love icebreaker underwear! I buy these in bulk when they go on sale and they are my every day staple. I would have given them 5 stars because as underwear, they’re amazing but for some reason the design department has decided to put a huge bundle of tags sewn into each pair that you have to very VERY carefully cut out. Having to use scissors to remove like 7 tags from a pair of expensive underwear is a bit stressful.
Washed one time on cold water delicate cycle and when I went to wear them for the first time there was already a hole in the seam the size of my thumb! I was disappointed paying $35 for one pair of underwear just to have it fall apart immediately. Very unfortunate because otherwise is very comfy for backpacking.
Great rear coverage. I'm 47 and in decent shape, but I'm shaped like a woman...with hips. I have a lot of different brands of wool underwear for hiking. The pros: Great for a womanly shaped body if you want panties that won't end up a thong, but aren't into grannie panties that come up to your waist. Cons: Definitely not seamless...panty line central (I generally wear these hiking or to the gym, so I don't care about my underwear lines), the seams were a little "sharp" when I purchased them, but they softened up after a few washes... And I washed them in the washing machine on a normal cycle in cold and put them in the dryer on a normal setting and they didn't shrink. I am not one to follow directions sometimes and don't have time to separate out all my underwear for laundry day, I throw all my wool underwear in the wash like normal and haven't had any issues.
This underwear is an absolute must for my backpacking trips. After an entire day of hiking and sweating, these briefs will keep me dry. No more cotton undies on the trail for me! I'm normally a size 4-6 in most underwear and based on their chart I'm a small - I sized up to a medium and got a much better fit. No sagging or uncomfortable rubbing on my thighs or butt.
This used to be my absolute favorite pair of underwear and I've convinced so many friends to buy it, but the quality has gone WAY down. The fabric is now thinner and the side seam fell apart after less than a month. I always baby my icebreaker clothes by washing them in garment bags on a gentle cycle, so I'm not sure how this happened. I'm guessing they got a new manufacturer or are cutting corners to save $, but you can't charge $35-40/ per pair of underwear if you're going to give us underwear that pulls apart at the seams. I really hope they're reading all of these reviews because so many have mentioned the major quality drop.
I wanted to love these Icebreaker hipkinis. They are super comfortable--true. But, they have horrible panty lines even in jeans. So, they get a big no from me, except around the house. maybe I will try "boy shorts" underwear in this style, because then it won't have leg elastic. Too bad. Great idea.
Exactly as advertised — comfortable, stink-free underwear great for variable temps/humidity. This was my first purchase of merino wool undies, and I'm after one camping trip I'm seriously thinking of replacing all my other underwear with these. For reference on fit, I wear 8-10 in Prana pants (hips/bum about 41" at widest) and the L fit well (a little bit of extra room, but still very comfortable and not visible under clothes). Most importantly, I wore them on an all-day, sweaty 10+ mile hike and they were so comfortable that I didn't think about them once! And really, isn't that what we all want in our underwear — for them to be so comfortable you forget you're wearing them? Highly recommended.
This is hands down my favorite underwear. Worth the expense! I wear them for literally everything, except for skiing because my fleecy long under pants cause them to bunch weird. Otherwise they're on by bum 7 days a week for commuting to work on my bicycle, rock climbing (gym and outdoor), yoga, hiking, and yes wearing the same pair multiple days a row when camping & backpacking.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After reading the reviews I hesitated to purchase. The last generation of hipkini underwear fit my body perfectly and recent reviews declared this generation completely different. Couldnt resist. The feminine pink color tempted me so I ordered some. The fit perfectly, just like the others!! The pink is a pretty shade and I am delighted to have feminine looking underwear at last. The last generation offered all drab colors, imo, so having the pink has rejuvenated my under garments. Thank you Ice Breaker. For the record, I am 59, 135 pounds, 36C. Size large underwear fit nicely.
