Excellent racing bike for children

My son races cross-country mountain bike and also cyclocross on this bike. Purchased it from a local shop. It was 2 lbs. lighter than his old bike (a Haro flightline 24), and for a child who weighs just over 70 lbs., a 2-lb. difference is quite significant, especially for climbing. For mountain bike races it's perfect. The low gearing means cyclocross is also possible, though of course children who have proper CX bikes will automatically have an advantage, as even the cheaper ones weigh 5 lbs. less than a mountain bike. It's quite possible to ride this Cannondale on the road as well--my son has ridden it on group rides of up to 26 miles--but due to the weight, it's best not to attempt road rides with several steep hills. It was a great idea for Cannondale to equip the bike with shorter-than-usual cranks, but the 130mm length is a bit TOO short, even for a child. 140mm would have been ideal, for sufficient power and realistic cadence, yet better than the typical 150-160mm length. The gearing is perfect for mountain and CX, but will be seriously under-geared for the road, if your child has good power. A slightly larger chainring would have been ideal. Also, the seatpost is a bit short, so as my son got a bit taller I had to replace it with a longer one. Overall, though, it is a fantastic bike for the price, and my son loves it.
