The Porsche of trail running shoes

Aggressive, minimalistic, almost over-engineered, and bright orange. Close your eyes, imagine a Swiss company engineering a trail running shoe. What you see is ON's Cloudventure Peak. Every aspect from the laces to the funky soles is thoughtfully engineered, to the point where the details delight but leave you worried that things might be over-engineered. Let me explain: Out of the box, the shoe looks incredible (who doesn't love a bright orange trail running shoe?) It's fantastically light and beautifully manufactured. On my first run I found the upper mesh very flexible, breathable (great for warm summer runs) and the shoe has a lot of room for my toes to stretch even though it doesn't feel like a wide-toe-box shoe. The sole is surprisingly hard, almost unforgivingly so. The word cloud in the name doesn't mean fluffy at all, which comes as a surprise on my first 20 miles on the trail. The shoe has an aggressive feel and I like it. My go to shoes is La Sportiva's Bushido, and I would but the Cloudventure Peak into a similar category. Putting this shoe on makes you want to go fast. After almost 50 miles on mixed terrain I enjoy the lightness, the roominess, the aggressiveness. The pros: The engineering, the quality of the materials, the details. The weight. Oh that shoe is so light. The upper is breathable, and there's lots of room for your toes, yet, my feet feel solid. The minimalistic and aggressive feel is something to get used to, but makes me want to attack the hill faster. The cons: The name: clouds are fluffy, and this shoe is not. This confused me at first expecting a cushy ride. The upper material is not designed to look great when it the shoe inevitably gets dirty. The sole, with the weird loops can get squeaky when running through wet grass. The questions: The upper mesh feels super light, which is great for summer mountain runs, but looks dirty really quick. I wonder if the material will handle the inevitable brushes with roots, branches and similar things found in PNW's forests. Nothing has torn yet, but I'm worried about it, because the material feels so light. The verdict: Priced on the upper scale for trail running shoes, this stylish no-nonsense shoe will delight with many smart and bold engineering decisions. The shoe is extremely light and breathy with an aggressive feel and minimal cushioning. The color is the best.

Fits like a glove

From the first time I put on the On Cloudventure Peak shoes, I loved the way they fit. The ripstop uppers are incredibly light and made it seem like they there was nothing on my feet at all. Because the soles are different than traditional soles, they take a bit of getting used to. The vertical support feels great while the horizontal support suffers a bit which may be a concern for those running on trails. But since I'm usually running straight ahead, this isn't a major issue. These are trail-running shoes and the soles feel fine on trails but they are a bit sensitive when running on the road. That's the only negative I found with these shoes. Pros - Light, well-fitting upper, cool-looking and fast Cons - Pavement hits your feet hard, not enough horizontal support

Great trail running shoe

I found this shoe to be excellent for my foot shape on morderate to long jogs on rough mountain terrain. They displayed capable underfoot protection from roots and rocks, while remaining nimble and light. The upper was breathable and comfortable, but doesn’t protect from moisture or cool mornings; my feet were quite cold on a 28 degree run. On the whole, I think these shoes are everything that a trail runner would want in a three-season running shoe or light hiker.

A Mixed Bag

I am very torn on the Cloudventure after 30 miles in mixed terrain and weather conditions. On one hand the shoes are incredibly light and nimble, making foot placement on rocks and general responsiveness great. The shoes also breath well and provided good traction in mud, wet snow and on rocks. However, I continually got a very sore ball of the foot after any run over 3 miles. I tried various combinations of socks and lacing techniques to help mitigate the irritation but was never able to make it go away. My best guess is my foot was able to move a little too much in the shoe, creating friction over time. I also found the heel of the shoe, and the shoe in general, to be quite stiff. This had its advantages and disadvantages. The stiff sole and unique lugs performed like a quasi rock plate, making tackling difficult and rocky terrain easier. But it ensures the shoe is a dedicated trail shoe and does not distribute impact as well as other minimalist running shoes. I am also hesitant about the durability. The light weight upper already has a small tear from contact with a rock or root. In the end, I feel these shoes only serve someone looking for a dedicated minimalist trail runner and competitors seem to provide better cushioning and fit at a similar weight.

High quality shoe that just doesn't work for me

I have mixed feelings about the Cloudventure Peak shoe. It's well-made and has a lot of really innovative features, but I personally find the forefoot uncomfortable. In terms of sizing, I found the 11.5 to be slightly larger than what I'm used to. The pros: The construction is great, with lots of attention paid to innovative details. I really like the upper on this shoe -- it's very comfortable, lightweight, and stretchy but reinforced with taped bands to for support. The CloudTec soles are unique. The "clouds" don't go all the way to the back of the shoe, and I found this to be a smart approach to preventing heel striking, particularly on hard descents. The cons: The last on this shoe is pretty hard, and the "clouds" on the forefoot don't provide any bounce. Instead of feeling a soft or even neutral landing, I feel the hard compressed "clouds" pressing against my forefoot, making my forefoot strike to be uncomfortable. It seems ironic that "clouds" would create pressure points, but that's what I feel. I run on trails that have a decent amount of gravel and knobby roots, and in these shoes I consistently feel more forefoot pressure than I would I like. As I said, I have mixed feelings about this shoe. Despite all the great innovations and attention to detail, this shoe just doesn't work for my feet or striking pattern.

Great for Trails. Aggressive tread.

Quite aggressive tread. Worked really well on slick mud, hills, grass. I ran quite a few miles on pavement as well just to give them a try, but will be sticking to off-road with this shoe. I usually wear an 11.5 in other shoes so I ordered the same. I feel that this shoe fits slightly larger and I probably could have gotten them in an 11 and been fine. The stretch of the upper gave my foot more room for my wider foot. All around a comfortable shoe.

Excellent trail shoe!

For starters, I'm looking forward to running many more miles in these shoes! They certainly feel a little different underfoot than the average trail shoe, but once you get used to them, they feel great! A very nice and unique combination of comfort and performance (in my experience you get one or the other with many shoes). The large "lugs/clouds" provide great traction and are very confidence inspiring knowing you aren't going to slip, even in thicker mud. They also provide a good barrier between the ground and your feet, lending lots of protection. With that said, because of the lug size, they do tend to catch on roots and rocks more than other trail shoes if you aren't picking your feet up high enough as you get fatigued. This also happens occasionally as you are about to plant your foot near a root or rock. This is the only reason they aren't a 5-star for me. They transition well to running on the road or just wearing casually, with the large lugs/clouds providing nice cushioning without feeling mushy. From a build quality perspective, they feel as good or better than any trail running shoes on the market, and I am confident I will get plenty of life and miles out of them!

Grippy and Light

For me the defining feature of these shoes (other than their electric orange color) is their grip on the trail. I have never felt so secure running down rough trail as I do in these. My feet stick to the trail like Spiderman! Even compared to my aggressively lugged mountaineering boots, these stuck to the trail better regardless of whether I was running on packed dirt with roots, plowing through loose sand, or rock-hopping. The one area that they had a little trouble was on a wet board-walk section of trail. These are really comfortable shoes. They are also really light. The uppers have some stretchiness to them, which allows them to be form fitting without feeling too tight. Because of this, there is some opportunity for side-to-side sliding within the shoe when your foot lands at a significant angle right to left (or vice versa), but this did not ever seem to be a major problem for me. Very secure front to back. As with most trail shoes, there is no motion-control, so if you are coming off a road shoe for overpronation these will take a little bit for your feet to get used to. Also compared to most running shoes, there is much more of a connection to the ground - you feel what you are running on. This not only aids with stability, but for me, make running more enjoyable. I like "feeling" the woods as I run through them. These shoes strike a great balance of cushion and connection. I have a pair of barefoot shoes and with them my feet can get sore pretty quickly. Not the case with the Cloudventures. These shoes also provide a lot more toe and heel protection than I anticipated when first looking at them. Outside of trail-running, these have become my go-to shoes for day hikes. They are lighter and perform better than my low hiking shoes... and they will fit better in my carry-on! For road running I am going to stick with my road shoes, but unless I am carrying a pack, if I am on a trail these shoes will be on my feet. Love 'em.
