Older model better
Very disappointed about the newer R1. The former R1 is my favorite mid layer - I wear it almost every day whether at home or on the trail. I bought a new one recently, and the change is not good - they added a new fabric in strategic spots (bottom half and under arms and hood) that is lighter, which makes sense, however, that fabric is not at all durable - the lighter fabric pilled and I had a small hole after my first 2 day hike (and I treat my gear very carefully). I hope they address the quality issue in the future. I unfortunately returned this one.
My new favorite active layer
For light hikes in chilly weather (50F or lower), or heavier exertion in colder weather, this layer rocks. It fits like a glove. It is soft and comfortable, and it works with my climbing harness and ski gear and it is absolutely worth the money. I was worried about some negative reviews online, and I think I may yet discover some of the shortcomings as I wear this thing for another few seasons, but man, so far, I love this thing. I want a second one just to sit around and wear with the hood zipped up all the way so I look like some kind of weird tadpole. Get one. You won't regret it.
Sickest Hoodie EVER
This is the most useful, versatile, amazing hoodie ever made. I can't imagine living without a couple close at hand. I live in Alaska and have one that I've been beating up for over 12 years - Patagonia just keeps repairing them over and over as needed. I've worn mine as pajamas on insanely cold nights, XC skiing, as a fly fishing baselayer, in -20F weather below a Nanopuff, and on 100+ other flavors of Alaska adventure. I tell people that one of these, a nano puff, and a good raincoat will get you through just about anything SE Alaska can concoct. Definitely make sure you have one of these Well worth the price, and notably better than the cheaper no-name brand ones that have appeared over the last 10 years.
Great for Hiking and Backpacking!
Patagonia never disappoints me. I completed a four day backpacking trip in the Pecos Wilderness. The Patagonia R1 is the perfect base layer. It lite weight, warm when it’s cold and cool as the sun gets warmer. I wore a short sleeve shirt underneath the R1 when sleeping at night. Temps were in the low 40’s and I was never cold. I love that the R1 has thumb holes! Makes it very easy using my trekking poles while hiking. The hood is added bonus. I highly recommend the Patagonia R1 as it’s versatile part of my layering system from this point forward.
R1 used to be much, much better.
Before 2015 model year, Patagonia equipped R1 with offset zipper, which doesn't go all the way to your nose, instead it goes to the side of your chin. Does it matter? Sure, it was much more comfortable to wear its hood. I get it. The cost-savings must have been a quarter or two per piece. The second thing they changed after 2014 was using cheaper, inferior outer fabrics, prone to pilling, and a few years later the outer fabric isn't even as soft as it used to be. The next thing they took away was the fit, and its trim athletic cut is forever gone. I get it. Patagonia has become a lifestyle brand now. It's no longer the dirtbagging brand of its past. But thoughout the years, every piece of the lining had always been Polartec PowerGrid, which gives you the soul of R1's signature warmth and breathability. Now Patagonia has taken that core feature away, which means R1 isn't going to be as warm as its previous generations. The good thing is they haven't raised the price yet. I guess that's precisely why they just have to cut corners somewhere to offset the depreciating value of USD. But, R1 isn't the only game in town anymore. For example, you've got Outdoor Research offering both Deviator and Ascendant hoodies, and by the way, OR has better warranty—lifetime free replacement, and also you've got thru-hike cottage industry offering fleece hoodies with hand pockets, made of the same Polartec PowerGrid fabrics. Of course, they're not Patagonia. If you need to wear its logo, R1 must be it.
I'm now "that guy"
I'm now the guy who wears a Patagonia pullover in almost all settings. It's really that good! If you plan on wearing anything more than a shirt as a base layer, size up. An XL fits snug without being suffocating. Still, it's never limited my range of motion, bunched up while under a pack or while being used as a base layer itself. It lives up to the promise of staying comfortable in "stop and go" activities. Overall, I've found that it breathes well; I haven't sweat through it while on medium to heavy hikes, or setting up camp and working outside. The hood fits close to the scalp, it has some give but I've only worn a baseball cap underneath. It'll more than cover you for a trip across the parking lot and a day in a drafty office.
Simultaneously fantastic and terrible
After much hemming and hawing, i decided to fork over the cash to have a truly breathable and warm layer rom Patagonia. That’s what I got! This thing is truly a microclimate for your body! I can remain comfortable in this layer depending on amount of physical activity from 40-60 degrees F. I rode my bike in this, hiked, climbed, etc. it performed flawlessly. Except the dang wrist cuffs. I’m not sure why Patagonia did not use elastic thread on the wrist cuffs, but when I pulled the sleeves up over my elbow for the first time, a necessary function when trying to cool down while not taking the layer of, I hear a horrible snapping and popping noise. The noise of stitching coming undone. The noise of poor quality craftsmanship. The noise of me ultimately returning this product. Eventually the stitching deteriorated so much that the cuff itself was only hanging onto the sleeve by a few threads. I loved the layer, but it really just didn’t cut it. Oh well.
SUPER BREATHABLE
I really love this. The hood is great. I slept in it with the hood on in cold 20° temps. Stayed warm and unlike a beanie that could fall off or become a itchy burden I didn’t even know I had the hood on and it stays perfectly tight. The face coverage is just under the nose when fully zipped. The zipper could bug some people cuz it goes straight up and you can feel it.
Favorite layering & sleeping piece in cool weather
As many others have said, this has become one of my favorite base layers in cooler conditions, and a perfect piece for sleeping in during a cool night camping. I did not expect to like this as much as I do partly because I prefer Merino under many conditions, but also because it appears to be so thin. Yet, it works.
go too fleece
I absolutely love this pullover, I use it relaxing in the evening, hiking in cooker temperatures, or just around the campfire. I didn't expect to use this as much as I do and it's amazing how is both insulated and breaths well. Love it!!
