Smooth Ride for My 10 Year Old
We bought this bike for our son's 10th birthday. Assembly was pretty quick (3 pieces) and REI even included a multi tool in the box to help you put it together. My only complaint is that the instructions covered 3 bike styles, so you have to find the subpart in each step that relates to your bike. The most important part is... my son really likes the bike. - It fits him well (no issue with tire clearance, which I saw in another review). - It is not much heavier than his old bike. - This is his first bike with gears. He figured it out right away. Shifting is smooth. - And finally, it looks cool. I would recommend it for sure!

Great looking bike, but flawed for kids
I was very encouraged by the reviews for this bike – including one from what I presume to be a proud outdoorsman whose small child (younger than the recommended age for this bike) raved that his youngster loved it. Has anyone noticed that the front wheel knocks your kid's feet off the pedals as there is almost zero clearance between the pedal and front tire when turning? Are we required to train them to be on their toes on the pedals? ...because even on the balls of their feet, a 10-year old still does not clear the front tire when pedaling through a turn. Odd design choice, which resulted in what can only be considered a product defect for a kids' bike.

Great Bike with Some Cons

The bike is for my 10 year old and he loves it. Only having 7 gears helped him make the transition to a geared bike easier since it's only one shifter. We love everything about the bike except for a few things: it's a little on the heavy side, the tires are too wide, and no braze-ons for a waterbottle cage. I ended up changing out to thinner tires to reduce the rolling friction, added a waterbottle cage to the handbars (not pretty or ideal but it works), and added a kickstand. I noticed there are a few questions regarding kickstands, so I've included some photos showing how well the one I bought on Amazon worked out.

Great bike. kickstand needs some grinding.

Great bike for kids. Parts are low end, but good enough for kids. My 9 years old daughter loves it. Be aware of the kickstand kS2-305B. This kickstand need to grind a big portion on the inner side, otherwise it will rub on the tire.

Found a KICKSTAND that works!

Great bike and features for the value. Many people say that one of the cons about this bike is that there are no kickstands that fit it...I purchased the Greenfield KS2-305 ("B" for Black) kickstand and it fits great! Cast aluminum, super heavy duty and will last as long as the bike...it clears the tire by about 1/8 of an inch and is perfectly in line with the frame when up. You do have to cut it to size with a hacksaw, but it is simple to do and if wanted, Greenfield has a rubber end you can purchase and install.

Great Bike for 9 Year Old Boy

I have two sons and bought few sub $500 bikes in last few years and this bike is one of the best ones for this category in the marketplace. You are not paying $1,000 plus for this bike, so don't expect it to perform like one. For it's price, the bike has a great built quality, looks good and it's pretty durable. Brakes and gears work great, we've had the bike for few months now and my 9 year old son loves the bike. Again, this is not a heavy duty mountain bike, perfect for street and light mountain biking for beginners to intermediate mountain bikers.

Sigh. Off to a bad start

I ordered this for my 8 year old. I had it shipped to the house because I didn’t want go to a store. I’m currently putting it together and I simply have one question. Does REI not own a medium resolution color printer? The quality of the pictures in the instructions make these almost worthless. Of course I will get it figured out but why intentionally make it more difficult. Come on REI. Be better than that.

Awesome Ripper for your 7-10 (11?)

I got to tell you, this bike rocks. My 7 year old (now 8) and his cousin have been able to put up 16 mile mountain biking days down at Baileys Trail System in south-eastern Ohio (seriously impressive trail) and they KILLED it. ONE NOTE, upgrade to a trigger shifter and have REI install it for you! MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE! Seriously the kids freaking love these bikes and they allow them to keep up with my brother-in-law and me on $1500+ bikes. The name brand (if still somewhat generic Tektro) are WAY better than the stuff they were installing on the 20" version of this a couple years ago.

Nice bike...with a modification

Bought this after a great experience with the Rev20. Solid bike but the so called mega-range freewheel has a massive jump between first and second gear. My son hated it and it made climbing hills were we live difficult. Swapped it out for a freewheel with an in-between gear (Sunrace) which solved the problem. Probably would have returned it otherwise. There are better bikes out there but the price is reasonable for a bike that will get knocked about learning to ride trails and out grown in a few years. It's a little on the heavy side but manageable.

Great Bike; on hills, roads, and trails

This bike fits my tall 9 year old great! He can shift (which he wasn't able to to do on many bikes we tried) and now he is cruising up way too steep hills (no more walking up hills!) He can reach the handle brakes for the downhills. He loves it and we love it, so we can go on family rides in our very hilly neighborhood. For the price and features, def recommend purchasing for your kid.
