Decent Insulation, Easy to Use, So-so cap
I bought this water bottle after having used the CamelBak Podium Ice Insulated Water for over a year. It doesn't insulate as well, but, it's is easier to clean, since the Camelbak one gets water stuck in the mouth piece, which I now disassemble to let dry after cleaning. My main critique of the Co-op bottle is that the cap developed a hole in just under a year of use. Not a big deal, but REI does not sell the cap without the bottle. It makes perfect sense that a hole would develop, given the need to bite the valve to open in, which is why REI should sell the cap, but now I'd have to buy an entire new one...and throw out a perfectly good bottle. This cap is available alone (Specialized MoFlo™ cap) online, but I would love to just be able to buy a replacement from REI, and not treat the entire bottle as "disposable".
Picture wrong or quality control is off
Works well, no leaks, Gatorade stays cool. However, it looks different from the picture (pink top purple bottom).
Great bottle, not-so-great top
I bought this water bottle for a cross-state bike ride I was participating in & was very excited to realize it did a pretty good job at keeping my water cold (in temperatures close to 90 deg F)! However, after one day of use & opening the top with my mouth while riding the bike, the rubber mouthpiece completely tore. I understand normal wear and tear from teeth pulling at the rubber, but would never expect that after one day, especially not after paying this price for It.
Keeps water relatively cool
I'm pretty happy with this water bottle. People say it doesn't have great insulating properties, and I'm inclined to agree. Insulation is a thin piece of foam. That said, it does it's job well enough. My experience: if I fill it to the middle with ice, the ice will last 60-90 mins depending on ambient air temp (average around 70s for me), and the water is usually still colder than room temp by the time I get back after a 2-3 hour ride.
cap nipple wears out
I wish REI sold replacement lids. All three I purchased the nipple wears out over time. It seems wasteful to buy a whole new bottle.
decent bottle deserves better caps
Just so we're clear, these are REI-branded Specialized Purist bottles. Lot of companies do it, I'd just usually expect that to be stated. (The primary benefit of these is that they are only $17 as opposed to the usual $20.) This is one of three main options out there for insulated bidons with Camelbak and Polar. It's the middle ground on both volume and price but not really as versatile as either. (more on that in a second.) The best reason to buy these is for style. I got the blue/white and orange/red fades and run a nice fire and ice drip. Lot of cool designs on these. Polar is okay, Camelbak is boring. Second best reason I can give is they last a long time. I got them two years ago and they still don't taste funky and they still keep drinks cold longer than usual, which were the selling points I bought it for. I haven't used the competition to I honestly can't say how *well* the insulation works comparatively, but I can say it works five extra bucks worth over the regular version. The caps, however, are bad news. Impossible to clean. I mean that literally. The nozzle is not removable and so grime collects in a few spots. This is ironic as I gave these a go since I was tired of the Camelbak nozzle that's similarly hard to clean and can't be opened with one hand. (these do win on that count.) Wouldn't be so bad if replacement caps weren't $4 and black only. The other drawback versus the competition here is versatility. Cambelbak and Polar both have different sizes available and dirt caps you can buy. (Polar nozzles can be unscrewed for cleaning as well.) But since it does what it says it will, lasts a long time, and looks cool that seems like at least a 4-star bidon.
Simple insulated water bottle does the job
I've had several different insulated water bottles over the past 8 years and they've all performed well. I'm in Alaska, so I get these to keep water from freezing (warm) while fatbiking. I got tired of keeping water bottles warm by carrying them around inside my jacket. This REI-branded model works as well as any other brand I've owned and is definitely cheaper. Highly recommend.
23 oz, durable, keeps drinks colder than others
GF and I ride regularly including a monthly metric century. I‘ve had one of these bottles for a couple of years, we carry 3 other randoms. Today was century day, 92 degrees and unusually humid. I’m writing this review this evening after purchasing 3 more of these bottles, I can’t think of a higher endorsement.
Solid water bottle
Great water bottle, could be bigger though. Also there is a plastic scent, which is difficult to get rid of.
Thermal Water Bottle
Being fair this insulting bottle was bought to keep water cold during my 2 hour bike rides. It’s working well for about an hour. Temps in the 90’s and full Sun in a dessert environment.
