Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Really good but bad quality

These shoes are amazing. My feet are on a cloud. I’m a wedding photographer and during wedding days you walk and spend easily 14 hours on your feet. Is exhausting! I have searched for shoes durring years, and when I finally bought these ones in September it was amazing! I could cry. Then why 3 stars? Because they are really bad quality. I have never in my life broke a shoe, but these ones started falling apart in november. They lasted 2 months only! $130 dollar shoes and they only last 2 months? I am hoping the company reads this review and improves the manufacting, because I can’t be spending $130 on shoes 4 times a year, on shoes I don’t even wear every day. Also, can you imagine all the waste in landfills from “old” half broken shoes? Come on Altra, do better!

Woweeeeee!!

Mid-distance runner here (think turtle's pace tho)...I'm a forefoot striker, with chubby toes after long distances in the heat. These shoes are so stretchy and squishy-good! Reviews are correct...they're slightly odd shaped, with the exaggerated toe box. But if it's what you need, then they'll be a welcome addition to your running wardrobe! The sale price is perfect, for the fact that with all the distance, you'll likely need to replace them in a few months...The quality is good, but it's yet to be seen how much wear they'll take. But that being said, I'm always happy to spend when I find something that feels good, and keeps my feet healthy!

I love the room for my toes

These were super comfortable when I put them on in the store - there is plenty of room for my toes to spread out and the sole is very flexible and well cushioned without being huge. Other than getting used to the profile there wasn't any break-in for these, they were great out of the box. I'm new to zero drop so the shoe took a little bit of getting used to but now I can feel my toes working while I'm running rather than being cramped up and hurting in my shoes. I feel more balanced and stable in these shoes. I just wish my local store had more colors on hand as I loved them so much I didn't want to wait a week for shipping.

Hands down my favorite running shoe

I bought my first pair because they were on sale at REI about a year ago. They are hands down, the most comfortable running shoe I've ever worn. I was a bit put-off by the large toe box at first, thinking it made my feet look odd, but in truth, it's because of that, they are so comfortable. I wear them every day at work, and then to the gym. They are incredibly comfortable, breath well, and very light (perfect for packing in your carry-on too ;-) ). Since I've been using this pair for the gym and my runs, I just bought a second pair for my every day use. These are now my only brand of running shoe.

Good shoe, not my type

Seems well made, like that there's plenty of room in the toe box. After wearing it out and about just once I realized I don't like the feel of it because it has so much cushioning. Not the shoe's fault, I didn't know its style well enough at time of purchase so still 3 stars. If I liked a lot of cushioning I'd probably give it a 5. Described as a zero drop from heel to toe. I prefer to feel the ground more than this allows tho - didn't realize a low drop also sometimes comes with so much cushioning. I would recommend only to people who prefer a lot of cushioning.

Picky feet approved

After running trails in Altra's for years, I knew my body could handle the 0 drop for the gym and for day to day wearing. I have tendinitis and it was suggested to me by my PT that I get in a shoe with a lot of cushion and that is this shoe! Lots of cushion, wide comfortable toe box so no rubbing on the bunion/baby toes, provides enough support for lifting weights/elliptical/cycling and day to day wear. Also love the color ways (I chose black on black and couldn't be happier!) and the fact that this model is true to size!

Inconsistent sizing but comfortable

First pair 7.5 felt a little on the short side but got used to it. The cushioning was good for my neuroma. I was hesitant to order another pair cause I felt the 7.5 was too short and the 8 I had tried in the store was too big. But I ordered another pair (different color) and this 7.5 was longer so seems better for my toes...BUT...the laces are so long I could tie them around my neck. What’s up with that? What am I supposed to do with that much shoe lace? I don’t run, just walk in them so can’t comment on rannability, they have been comfortable for walking with bad feet.

Thrilled to finally find a shoe that really fits!

I wear Birkenstock sandals because of planter fascitis issues and my need for a wide toe box. They are not great for even our miild Seattle winters but I can't wear their closed shoe products nor seemingly any other brand until I found Altra at REI, I have tried on athletic shoes everywhere and in every brand. These Altras are the first shoes I've found to be instantly comfortable. I am so thrilled! I was also so pleased that they make a 10.5. I need that size but, of course, can rarely find it made by shoe manufacturers. I will be trying all their other shoes, also! I'm so grateful that REI carries them!

Improved balance

This is my second pair of the Escalante 1.5. I was immediately impressed with the roomy comfort my toes felt and the improved balance I felt in general. The flexibility coupled with good support were an added bonus.
