I got one of these 3 weeks ago after carefully researching lightweight downjackets. The RAB is lightweight and fits me well. I think the fit tends to run on the snug size. I am 5'8" and 155 lbs. and got a medium. This works well with a shirt and even a light sweater underneath. The rain restitant features seem to work well for drizzle or light rain. Beyond that I would plan on wearing a shell over it. It does dry quickly. It does come with a stuff sack, but it doesn't compress as well as some competitors and looks like a grapefruit when stuffed. I have worn it on 30 degree walks around our local lake and have never felt cold or too hot.
My expectations for the jacket were very high. When I received it I was frankly blown away. The jacket is ideal for hiking and backpacking. It's lightweight, pack-able, comfortable and surprisingly warm. When put in the included stuff sack, the jacket packs down to about the size of a water bottle and weighs very little. Unlike a lot of my other backpacking gear, the jacket is stylish enough that I'm not ashamed to wear it to work or social events. Overall, I would recommend this jacket to anyone, even a casual hiker, but especially to a backpacker looking to stay warm while saving space and weight.
Ok so first the good -it's light -It's reasonably warm although not as warm as you'd expect now the bad -The colour on the inside of the beluga is horrible, makes the jacket look cheap and tacky -The fit is terrible they have made no attempt to fit this to the body it's like a box -Also certain area's are overly baggy in relation to the rest of the jacket (e.g. upper arms) -The hood is too big and gets in the way, wind catches it and pulls it back as it's too big -The jacket is uncomfortable to wear, the jacket sits to high at the front and rubs on your chin I'd avoid unless fit, comfort and looks mean nothing to you
I've had this jacket for two seasons and love it, also, can confirm that they stand behind their warranty, replaced faulty zipper quickly and without any hesitation. My only problem with this jacket is the hood's shock cord keepers (they're not cord locks) don't keep it tight. I am going to ask what size the cord is and am going to thread on two cord locks. That would make it better. Also, wish the hood had a back draw but I knew it didn't when I bought it and I don't think many, if any, down jackets have that like hardshells do... So, not really a big deal there. Just needs actuall cord locks for the hood.
I can't express how much I love this jacket. The design is superior to my previous experiences with other makers. It's true to size, extremely comfortable, super warm, looks great and does exactly what you think it should. I have a black model, it's dark black. The cuffs keep my wrists protected. Hood fits well with a beanie or baseball cap. Zippers are high quality. Double adjustments at the hit are strong. The warmth factor is just wonderful. I've been comfortable at 30 degrees with just a cotton long sleeve underneath. I'm 5'11, 150 lbs. I'm using the medium. Just tickled to death with it.
Really like the style of this coat, but couldn't make it work with the fit. I'm typically a medium for jackets and the M of this coat hugs really tight around the chest and sneaks up the armpits. Pros: lightweight, highly functional - snow bounced right off the jacket, stayed warm in 20/30F range in Denver, design, color, sleeve length and waist length were perfect. Cons: Tight in chest, rides up armpit area, tight in neck when fully zipped and with hood on, logo not very visible or exciting. Sizing up to a Large due to the fit.
Superb light down jacket which is proving perfect for three season backpacking and wild camping. The water resistance is especially useful.
Fantastic jacket. Great colour and cut. Fantastic and clever technical details.
Extremely warm, especially considering the light weight. Nice cut - not too tight but also form fitting enough to fit comfortably under a shell. Packs down very small. The bendable brim on the hood makes for a great hood fit. Fantastic jacket overall.
Great fit , insulated and waterproof, love the colour.
