I love the comfort of this pad. It is the comfort that makes this a two star review and not a one-star. However, the inflation valve has a design flaw that cannot be fixed. There is a small disk the size of a dime. This allows air to pass through during the inflation process, but is supposed to prevent air from escaping. This does not work well. There is also a plug as a secondary method from preventing air to escape. It does not prevent air from escaping. I have examined the valve carefully, I do not see any debris or damage. I carefully removed any dust on top of valve, under valve, and the contact between valve-disk and valve. All valve parts are clean and undamaged. The leak is very slow. But it is enough that my pad is mostly deflated after 4-6 hours of use. This causes me to have to re-inflate the pad in the middle of the night. I am a an engineer and worked in product testing. This valve requires a design and or material change in order to work properly. Conceptually, I like the inflation / deflation valve, but the execution in this product is a failure.
I bought this pad last year to replace an Ex-Ped mat which popped during a trip. My last trip, six nights in the backcountry of Yellowstone, was great in part due to this Sea to Summit pad. I bought the large pad. It's light, very easy to inflate and deflate and packs easily into its stuff sack. As for durability, it didn't pop! I'm a side sleeper and found that if the pad was under inflated my hip would touch the ground. However when fully inflated there were no issues. As for noise, It's not bad. Less again then the Ex-Ped. Finally, this is a great pad. It worked very well and has a permanent place in my backcountry gear. I'm now a Sea to Summit fan.
I purchased this for a two backpacking trek at Philmont in New Mexico. I have completed three treks in the last five years once with an acordian type pad that was too bulky on my pack and another using my Crazy Creek chair as a pad. I decided that I would try out a inflatable pad and I was very happy with this one. It inflated very well, the two way valve makes it extremely easy to inflate as well as deflate. The pad easily fit back into the carry bag and was easy to tuck down into my backpack next to my sleeping bag. I was surprised by the level of warmth the pad provided and it kept me from getting wet during a couple of heavy rains with light water coming into the tent.
I've never had a better nights sleep while camping. I'm 6'0, 190lbs, and a side sleeper and this pad feels amazing. I was sold on Sea to Summit pads after reading numerous reviews, but I wanted to be sure about exactly which pad would work best for me. I inflated four different options at my local REI and tested them all out in store. The comfort plus insulated and the ultralight insulated really stood out. I bought both (wife sleeps on the comfort plus most of the time, and I use the ultralight for backpacking). No regrets about the cost, worth the investment.
I wish I could love this sleeping pad. It's very comfortable, especially as a side and stomach sleeper. However, it very slowly loses air through the night. When it's warm it seems to lose less air and it's fine, but on a cold night I wake up on the ground because of the deflation. Additionally, over the course of a two month hike, the valve has become nearly impossible to open and close. It does not have any visible damage or debris but both the inflation sack and the cap for the valve don't really fit in the valve anymore. Some pros are the weight, size, and comfort of this pad. At 5'2" the short size is perfect for me. It packs down nice and is super packable.
I first tried this pad on a backpacking trip from horseshoe meadows to Mt. Whitney via Crabtree pass. We got stuck in a white out snow storm and had to set up shelter quick! 5 people jammed into a 2 man + tent since that was all the space we had on the mountain for shelter. I believe this pad out shined my tent mates pads. It was easy to take out and unfold, blew up in less than 24 breaths ( I count, it varies on elevation...lol) and it molded easily to my designated spot in the tent. The insulation kept my core warm and dry from the frozen ground. The valves to inflate and deflate are GENIUS. It comes in at just under a pound. I wish they had a lighter pad with the same R value as I tend to get cold at night but I am perfectly happy with this pad.
Love this sleeping pad! Other pads always hurt my hips and I have tried so hard to sleep on my back but just can't do it. So when I read that this pad is great for side sleepers, I decided to splurge and give it a try. SO worth it! I even slept on my tummy comfortably! PROs: Easy to blow up, very comfy, light weight and packs down pretty small. CONs: noisy when rolling around (my husbands complaint), felt a little bit of the cold in the night from the ground. Overall: Impressed and will definitely keep!
I had an inexpensive REI-brand sleeping pad for years. It did the job but I never slept very well and always woke up tired and with a stiff back. I finally decided to upgrade my and my husband's sleeping pads recently. I ordered this model for myself and the Sea to Summit Comfort Light SI Sleeping Pad for my husband. We ended up both LOVING this model so we returned the other one and now both have this model. It's incredibly comfortable and packs extremely light. I wish I upgraded earlier. The only pitfall is that you have to inflate it yourself but it's seriously worth the comfort and the packability. I highly recommend this sleeping pad both for backpacking and car camping!
I really researched a lot of the different sleeping pads and was looking for comfort that would justify any weight for a backpacking trip. I tested this out on a Boy Scout camping trip and unfortunately found that while extremely comfortable when inflated this did not last and I might have well been sleeping on the ground within an hour after inflation. I could find no discernible punctures or holes and this was my experience first time out of the packaging. Perhaps it was a design flaw with my individual purchase but I am leary about replacing it with another. :-(
This is the kind of product that may end a lot of debates (competition) about sleeping pads, if enough people will try it out and spend the cash. There are several design features that make this pad extremely comfortable and user-friendly. The price seemed a bit high at first but I found a 20% member sale, and the size large costs about the same as a night in a hotel, and after I put 100 nights on it this season it will be a bargain. Not to mention the fact that it may come in handy at a hotel if the beds are bad. My first three pads were a NeoAir Trekker, Klymit Static V, and Big Agnes Q Core SL, and I think this is the finest, by far, in terms of comfort, warmth, and ease of use. The rolled size is just a few inches shorter than my bear can, a little bit longer than a nalgene, so it packs perfectly across the width of my pack. The folds in the pad are sharp creases that follow the design, so it is effortless to trifold this before rolling. There are several versions of this pad, but I chose this for the combination of warmth while remaining at a very low weight. The added weight of the other models seems a bit silly for "added comfort" when this thing feels amazing. The large is only 19 oz, pretty warm (haven't tried it on snow but haven't felt any ground cold after ten nights about 45 degrees), and big. I am 6'2" 230# and sleep with my arm up under my pillow and feet extended, and nothing hangs off. Twelve breaths to blow it up, and the optional air stream pump saves a little time but keeps spit out of the pad. Air Stream works great as a clothes sack. The pad has two valves (the highest-end, heaviest, red version has valves on top and bottom in case of a blowout), the inner for inflation, outer for deflation. The pad empties about 90% of its air within a few seconds of opening the outer, so you don't have to 'squeeze' deflate it once before rolling it up like many other pads. If you are thru-hiking you will appreciate how much time this pad may save you in the mornings. The inner valve has a small red tab that allows you to deflate the pad in short bursts for comfort tuning. The surface is tacky and a tad bit squeaky when skin rubs it, but normal rolling around is not loud like some others- there is no crinkling sound. The greatest feature of this pad is comfort- they really nailed it. Just a really amazing surface to relax and sleep on from any side, and there are no points where your body presses through to the ground like my hips can do on the Klymit . You can move around a lot without shifting the air in it or leaning.
