Dream bike
Our family had been eyeing this bike for over a year and we finally pulled the trigger and purchased it from REI. 100 miles in and we could not be happier. The bike works for me and my husband and our toddler and 4 year old love it too. The real selling points for me were the 20” tires - kids lower to the ground makes balance much easier and makes me feel safer - and the relatively low profile for a mid-tail cargo bike. We have a narrow hallway with tight turns to get to building bike storage and this bike can maneuver it while others just can’t. Did you know you can also store it upright?! It’s really thoughtfully designed for city living. While we looked at less expensive options, the GSD really was the perfect bike for our family. It’s zippy and feels safe and it is a real pleasure to ride. The other day we went food shopping and got up a huge hill with a bunch of groceries on the front rack and two kids sitting on the back, no problem. We look forward to using it for many years to come!
The second car
After a bit over 150 miles, I am happy to report that the Tern GSD is indeed the dream bike I've been looking for. My kiddo dubbed is "the fast bike" as our old bike was getting slower as he got bigger. The clubhouse in the back keeps him secure and up out of traffic (bike lanes in my city often go between two lanes of traffic) along with bags for when we need to do grocery stops. After transporting him to and from preschool for over a year on the back of a regular, 14 year old Trek bike, the stability of the Tern with a small passenger is such an improvement (thank you, 20 inch wheels!). The pedel-assist helps with the hills and has brought back a lot of confidence to my biking. Sure, less exercise for me, but when the temperatures next summer crest over 100 again coming to my desk not covered in sweat after drop off is going to be amazing. We've already left the car in the garage for a few trips in favor of taking the bike and I look forward to many more bike trips to the weekend farmer's markets. And kudos to the REI bike shop staff for being excited with me from ordering to building to delivery.
Car replacement!
I've been riding my GSD for one week now—it's likely dollar-for-dollar the best investment I've made. Rides like magic, carries my kids, my groceries, my dreams :D.
Well built
This is a solid bike and you get what you pay for. Most bike repair shops refuse to service lower end online ebikes because the components (brakes, spokes, chain, etc.) are not built for the speed and weight of an ebike. The hydraulic brakes on this bikes will stop quickly which is vital when I am carrying a precious load like my grandson. The GSD is long and the center of gravity is low so the likelihood of going over the handlebars is low. I crashed into a log in the dark with no damage to the frame and no flip. I probably get about 30 -35 miles per charge which is great for errands around town. The front cargo rack is very useful. My headlight is not that bright but I saw that the new model has a brighter light and and easier to deploy kickstand. The Thule child seat attaches without any additional hardware.
