Smooth, solid, and surprisingly quiet ride
Wanted something easy and low maintenance to ride on my off days from running, and thought a Single Speed bike would do the trick. Glad I settled on the Pure Cycle Coaster, I've put nearly 250 Miles in four months on it so far, and it's still performing like the day I bought it, with practically no maintenance, apart from airing the tires once in awhile. Really love the how smooth and quiet the ride is, the tires produce very little, if any, road noise, and, of course, there's no sound of gears while you're riding; I'm actually a bit worried about how quiet the bike is when passing up people on narrow paths, so I usually call out when I'm passing, and considering buying a bike bell as well. The Bike feels solid over bumps, with little rattling, so very comfortable ride as well. Look, this is a Single Speed, you're not going to be setting off any course records with this thing, climbing hills are a pain in the bum without extra gearing, but I love the dead simple ride everytime I get on this bike, and never having to concern myself with anything else but pedaling. So, if that appeals to you, then I'd highly recommend this Pure Cycle, especially for the relatively cheap price compared to other bikes.
Great Bike
Excellent commuter bike. This is my second Pure Cycle coaster bike. My first Pure Cycle bike was stolen on a train while commuting to work. Everything about this bike is functional and well designed..
Ideal for the Boardwalk
First, I’m 5’11” and the medium (54 cm) is the perfect size. I ride this bike for recreation and exercise around Williamsburg, Virginia which is mostly flat with a few rolling hills. The geometry of the bike means you sit upright but you can also stand up to peddle when you’re going uphill or passing a horse drawn carriage. The frame is lightweight (26 lbs.) but solid. There is one gear and a coaster brake, so the ride is smooth and quiet. This bike works very well on pavement and the occasional brick road. And it is ideal for cruising the Virginia Beach boardwalk.
Excited/Dissapointed
I was so excited to get this bike. When I picked up from REI, it was exactly what I wanted! The top tube was a little short for me but I just changed the stem. The real issue was the front hub. Either the bearings were defective or not greased or both but the front wheel was completely shot after a short 20-mile ride. Now waiting for local deal
Not worth the money, even on sale!
In my opinion this bike, even on sale, is way overpriced. There are much better options out there and I would suggest doing a little research before buying. I only purchased this bike because I wasn't able to examine it prior to the sale.
All you really need
I wanted a simple, lightweight bike for getting around campgrounds and neighborhood parks. Great styling. The medium frame is a perfect fit for me, 5'11". Well made, well assembled by the Overland Park KS REI.
Great basic bike
This is a great bike for a pure, easy riding experience.
Bad NYC Bike!
If you live and ride your bike in NYC, stay away from this bike! It's too cheap, my rear wheel keeps on blowing out (cheapo wheels and tires) due to potholes and rough NYC riding, AND coaster brakes in NYC are DANGEROUS: you cannot stop quick enough. NYC drivers are careless, and often pull out into the bike lanes without looking.
very smooth and comfortable ride
it rides really smooth but gets easily punctured. I don't know about frame durability yet because I've only had it for a month but it's doing great for now. Also, way too expensive make sure to wait for sales. And rei says they have free flat repair but it's not free because they replace the tube every time no matter what and you have to pay for parts, so for each flat you have to pay around five dollars.
