I purchased the Yakima SkyRise 3 for off-road camping and it does not disappoint. I, along with my two oldest children ventured out on a 178-mile trip through the Mojave National Preserve. This was our SkyRise 3's maiden voyage and it was amazing. I have it mounted to Yakima BedRock system in my Toyota Tundra which helped reduce wind resistance and even with significant amount of road dust, the tent was perfectly clean after removing the cover. It's easy to set up, sleeps 3 comfortably and even had enough room to collapse with our queen-sized sleeping bag inside. I am a huge fan and can't wait for the next adventure.
We could not be any happier with the purchase of this RTT it is very light weight and not even felt going down the road. set up is pretty close to instant if no rain fly and right at 3 minutes if rain fly used, mattress is thick and able to sleep on your side WITHOUT feeling the floor. very weather proof (unfortunately tested first night with severe storms). great value for the $$ under 120 lbs. means fuel saved going down the road.
I'm glad I bought the SkyRise 3 rooftop tent. Having the SkyRise 3 allows me to explore new areas of the country that I once had no visited. It doesn't disappoint. Setup, configuration and installation of the SkyRise 3 was fairly straightforward. It took me some time to unpack the SkyRise 3 and install the different components before I could affix the roof top tent to my vehicle. All-in-all this was about an hour's worth of work. Some of the bumps and scrapes that I encountered came as a result of my efforts trying to set the tent on top of my vehicle by myself. The SkyRise 3 definitely needs 2 people to put it on top of a vehicle and to remove it. This is one downside. Once the SkyRise 3 was affixed to the top of my vehicle, opening up the tent took less than 30 minutes to set up. Closing up the tent, takes about the same time. I'm sure this will get quicker over time. The construction of the tent was good. My SkyRise 3 had none of the workmanship issues that some others have reported. I do however agree that the aluminum/styrofoam platform sandwich is easily susceptible to dents and slight gashes if not properly cared for. There needs to be better protection between the platform and the ladder as this can cause scratches and dents in the platform. I also had some issues when attempting to install the SkyRise 3 by myself. My own undoing. Although the current design makes the SkyRise 3 lighter, it also makes it pervious to some damage to the platform. This is another downside. Sleeping in the tent is fairly roomy and comfortable. This I'm glad that I ordered the larger SkyRise 3 model. The included mattress pad is a good start. It is cushiony but could use some extra cushion. I also tried using old king sheets which didn't fit perfectly given the non-standard mattress size of the SkyRise 3. Without the rain fly on, ventilation was good. However, having the rain fly included was a nice thing to have. It would be nice if the rain fly had a pouch to store it in. In summary, given the two minor downsides that I noted, I'm happy with my purchase of the SkyRise 3 roof top tent. As a first time camper, the value for my money was well worth the investment. The convenience of having the SkyRise 3 and the versatility of my vehicle will allow me to travel and stay at places I've never been. See the attached photo and you'll understand why.
NOTE: Inside was full of very small metal shavings from construction. Be sure to take everything out and vacuum. Also be sure to sear off any loose threads with a lighter. Finally, setup the rain-fly when the tent fully constructed, and use some marine water proofing spray and/or any seam sealant (the fly is not 100% waterproof). I bought this tent about 3 months back, and have taken it on some tough off-road adventures. I'm rating it 5 stars simply because it's the best bang for your buck when on-sale through REI. Minus some bad quality inspection, it's a very solid and rugged tent when alleviating issues. I do not use this tent with the included quick attach/detach mounts. I have this tent mounted directly to the frame of my trucks bed rack. It's the perfect footprint for a 4 person cab + short bed truck. If you're on a budget, and don't mind fixing some factory oversights, this is no doubt the roof top tent to buy.
I bought this tent around new years and have been able to take it out 2x thus far. I couldnt be happier with the purchase. I have the 3 person and got it at a discount. Very easy to get onto my rack. It is very convenient to not have to use tools. Quality is just as good if not better than most other ftt that cost twice as much. I have not used the tent in any kind of rain or snow. I have used it in 10 degree temperatures and didnt have any moisture inside the tent in the morning due Disclaimer: Be sure to open in the store. My tent was missing all of the mounting hardware. I didnt realize this until i made the 40 minute drive from the store home. I would have taken a star away for this if the employees at my REI store hadn’t resolved the situation so quickly. They pulled the missing parts from a 2 person Yakima tent in stock, avoiding me having to send the entire tent back to Yakima for a return and reorder. This made it so i was still able to go out and use the tent that same weekend.
I picked the roof top tent at the REI Castleton (Indianapolis) location Friday. Saturday I attempted to assemble and attach to my Forester except my Skyrise3 was MISSING all of the clamps and mounting hardware to attach it to my rack...
Yakima is a latecomer to the RTT market and it shows in this product. They provide the support horsepower of a big company, which is great, but also necessary to deal with the product’s bugs. The good: relatively lightweight, roomy, simple to deploy and use. The ability to choose between side-unfold and rear-unfold is a really nice unique feature. Mine was discounted to $950 on sale, so a comparatively good value. With the rainfly, it’s a good waterproof shelter. In a driving rainstorm, I had none of the leakage reported in other reviews, although the design of the rainfly reveals why this is a possibility: the corners are a bit exposed. The bad: QC issues. The cover was assembled wrong and had to be replaced. One of the clamps was bent and had to be replaced. The tent body was sewn wrong and ultimately had to be replaced. Yak was great with service and even comped me on some accessories, but I spent many too hours dialing the tent in. Would be best to inspect everything carefully at the store if possible. REI exclusively offers this tent in green, which is really nice. I rented the red version before buying this one, and waking up bathed in crimson light is a bit harsh. The green blends nicely into the tree canopy and feels more appropriate. Verdict: on sale, it’s a decent value for occasional weekend use. Between Yak’s great warranty support and REI’s generous return policy, you’ll have time to test-drive and de-bug, but be prepared to spend that time.
