NRS Foam Paddle Float
A paddle float is an essential piece of safety gear. The NRS Foam paddle float secures easily to your paddle blade and acts as an outrigger support when the other blade is secured to your boat.
- Slide the blade into the nylon fabric pocket on the back; webbing buckle on the front secures the paddle to the float
- Expanded polyethylene (EPE) foam won't hold water and stands up to years of abuse
- Bright-orange, 400-denier nylon outer shell and strips of reflective tape provide visibility in low light

Surprisingly good for the price, worked fine
Buying the best does not always mean the most expensive. I was dubious about buying this foam float since it was lower cost, but it worked great in a recent rescues class. This nice flat block gives plenty of flotation. When I did paddle float rescues it was easy for me to straddle and get on the paddle then hoist myself on the boat. I have an inflatable float and it may be a bit more buoyant but the surface is not as uniform. I know a lot of sea kayakers feel that carrying something on their deck slows the aerodynamics; adds weight. I don't think this 11 0z item does much to slow me and anyway the hull aqua dynamics are a lot more important. The orange nylon color does fade from a burnt to more citrus orange after some months in the sun and salt.
Inadequate Flotation
Even as a petite paddler, I was unable to complete a paddle float self-rescue using this foam float. When weight was placed on the paddle, this float sank substantially below the water surface. I easily completed the same self-rescue using an inflatable paddle float (also made by NRS); with the inflatable float, the paddle stayed at the surface of the water even with all my body weight on it. Despite the extra inflation time involved, I'd strongly recommend buying the inflatable NRS model over this foam model.
good idea in theory, but not in practice.
I purchased this instead of a blow up paddle float thinking that in an emergency I won't want to waste time blowing up anything. However, when I took an ACA rescue safety course, there was a clear difference in functionality between this float and the blow up kind. This float kept flipping under pressure and did not have the same buoyancy as the blow up kind. I successfully managed re-entries with the blow up kind on the first try, but could not even get back into my boat with this float after several tries.
works, but some issues
This paddle float works for self-rescue. There are some issues. 1) storage of it on deck requires some custom job, 2) the float actually may take water into the pouch if positioned wrong, which may be difficult to retrieve after use. 3) It may not work with greenland paddle since it is too slim. Otherwise, it does provide sufficient support if you are fluent with self-rescue.
Excellent Paddle Float
Excellent float for those times when an incident occurs with you kayak. I've practiced with these in a pool and they work very well. Great product
Paddle Float
Exactly what I was looking for - very happy with quality and price ;)
